More elbow room coming for Raiders coaches
By Marc Katz
Dayton Daily News
Most of the varsity sports at Wright State are off this week or playing on the road.
That made it a good time to remodel the athletics department, that hodgepodge of cubicles on the third floor of the Nutter Center.
Over the years, as the department grew and added sports, space for the coaches didn't increase. Instead, cubicles were added and the department became a maze.
This academic year, as the nearby Setzer Pavilion opened, men's and women's basketball coaches moved to the new building and plans were made to re-do and refurbish the space at the Nutter Center. Instead of cubicles, office walls will hit the ceiling and coaches should have more room.
"Every coach and assistant coach should have an office," WSU athletics director Mike Cusack said. "It will take four-to-five weeks to complete."
Cusack also said there are no immediate plans to add ice hockey to the varsity roll in the wake of the school's club team winning the ACHA Division III championship.
Wright State is in a unique situation in that it already has ice, so the biggest expense is being paid by somebody else. Of course with ice hockey, uniform expenses and travel quickly bite into budgets, and at WSU there would be the question of practice time.
Not only do both the men's and women's basketball teams use the Nutter Center for games — and some practices — but the ECHL Dayton Bombers also use the facility. To make it work for varsity hockey, a nearby stand-alone practice facility would have to be erected.
Meanwhile, what hockey there is at the school is best at its level. Michael Blackwell scored a goal with three minutes to play to beat Northwood in the championship game in Fort Myers, Fla., Saturday.
Teammate Jayson Cash was named tournament MVP and goalie Tyler Mittlestead was named to the all-tournament second team.
Showing team spirit, Mittlestead insisted Tony Tabisz — WSU's other goalie — join him while he received his award.
Raider notes
