WSU's Cusack begins search for new coach

FAIRBORN | Wright State Athletic Director Mike Cusack plans to scout as many NCAA basketball teams as he can this weekend with members of his staff at the Setzer Pavilion across from the Nutter Center.
That's right. He's not interested in the games. He's interested in the teams.
"I want to see how they play, how they're coached," said Cusack, who is in need of a coach. Wright State and third-year coach Paul Biancardi signed a termination agreement Monday after an NCAA ruling Friday that he had broken NCAA regulations while an assistant at Ohio State.
Biancardi's penalty levied by the NCAA is a ban on all recruiting activities until October 2007.
"I'm just happy it was resolved," Cusack said.
His task now is the find a replacement for a coach who was 42-44 in three seasons.
"I'd like to find a replacement in 4 to 6 weeks, but I'm being broad," Cusack said. "I'd like to get it done sooner."
He said he is happy that this year's Final Four will be played in nearby Indianapolis, April 1-3, where he expects to be collecting resumes and conducting interviews.
"Every potential candidate will be at the Final Four," Cusack said, meaning those with jobs and those looking for jobs.
By Tuesday afternoon, Cusack had already heard directly or indirectly from about a dozen candidates, mostly through e-mail.
"I think people see this as an attractive job," Cusack said. "In the past, we put our emphasis on a top Division I assistant. I think we're to the point of attracting sitting head coaches.
"We have a good fan base, attractive facilities and a good base team. As a mid-major, you won't find many teams with a fan base like ours or our facilities.
"I'm not saying we have to have a guy with head coaching experience, but we're not limiting ourselves."
Meanwhile, over at the Pavilion, assistant coach John Fitzpatrick was helping keep things in order. This week is exam week at the school. Next week is spring break.
"We've called all our recruits, we're continuing to schedule (for next season) and we're making sure our kids are going to school," Fitzpatrick said. "The basketball office is operating."
