Mick Cronin, recognized as one of the nation’s top assistant coaches prior to becoming the Racers’ 13th head coach, proved in his first season in 2003-2004 that he is one of the bright young head coaches in the business. In his first season, Cronin led the Racers to a 28-6 record, an OVC Tournament championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. His 28 wins rank fifth all-time in NCAA history for wins by a first-year head coach.
Last season’s 17-11 mark has made Cronin even more determined to get the Racers back to the NCAA. Cronin arrived in Murray after serving as associate head coach/recruiting coordinator for two seasons at the University of Louisville under head coach Rick Pitino. Prior to his stint with the U of L, Cronin was an assistant to Bob Huggins on the Cincinnati coaching staff for five years and is a noted recruiter and game strategist.
In his first full year with the Cardinals, Cronin helped U of L attract a recruiting class rated among the nation’s top-10, while in his second season, he helped lead the Cardinals to the second round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament. During the Cards’ impressive 25-7 campaign in ‘02-03, they won 17 straight games during one stretch, were ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation and won the CUSA Tournament. An important part of the success was the play of one of Cronin’s key signees, Francisco Garcia, the 2003 C-USA Freshman of the Year and last June, a top draft pick with the NBA’s Sacramento Kings.
Cronin has been recognized as one of the top assistant coaches in the nation by a number of sports publications including: Rated as the top assistant coach in the nation in 2002-03 by Athlon Magazine; Named top assistant in Conference USA in ‘02-’03 by Lindy’s College Basketball; One of the top-5 assistants to watch in 2001-02 by Lindy’s College Basketball; named top recruiting assistant in the nation and top assistant in C-USA by The Sporting News in 2002-03; and was the second-ranked assistant coach in the nation by HoopScoop.
Before being selected by Pitino to be associate head coach at U of L, Cronin began earning his label as one of the top assistants in the nation by playing a key role in the success of the Cincinnati men’s basketball program from 1997-2001.
As the Bearcats’ recruiting coordinator, Cronin helped Cincinnati attract a top-five rated recruiting class in two of his last three seasons and another which was ranked in the top 10. During his eight-year tenure (two at U of L, six at UC) every one of Cronin’s recruiting classes has been ranked in the top-10 nationally by one major recruiting service or another. Though only 33, Cronin has already accumulated a wealth of coaching experience.
While completing his undergraduate degree at UC, he served as assistant varsity coach and head junior varsity coach at Cincinnati’s Woodward High. Cronin compiled a sparkling 57-3 record in three seasons as JV coach, while as a varsity aide, he helped the school claim three city championships. helped develop six players who went on to play Division I college basketball, including former Louisville players Eric Johnson and Dion Edward and former Cincinnati guard Damon Flint.
