Still day to dayBy Marc Katz Wednesday, January 14, 2009 FAIRBORN — It’s still day=to-day with Vaughn Duggins, but the junior guard most likely will miss his 14th game Friday night when the Raiders play at Detroit. Duggins finally met with his doctor today and was told he was healing nicely from a broken right ring finger, although the finger continues to bother him. “He hasn’t really practiced for two days, just some light shooting,” WSU coach Brad Brownell said. “I would say he won’t play against Detroit. We’ll have to figure out what we’re going to do next week.” John David Gardner has been a pleasant surprise filling in for Duggins, but Gardner has gone through his own injury situations with his foot and hip. Because he plays so hard during games, he has been held out of several practice drills in order to keep him together. Meanwhile, even though the Raiders have had these problems, they are 9-2 since losing their first six games of the season. www.daytondailynews.com/o/content/shared-gen/blogs/dayton/wrightstatesports/

I think we should wait until the 22nd or 24th to make a decision on Vaughn. That gives him 8 days to improve. If he is still bothered by his hand at the mid-point of the HL, then we should redshirt him. Having him available for 2 more years is not a bad thing. But his hand could strengthen a good deal between now and then, so I'd be in favor of waiting to see. As mentioned above, we have only lost 2 of the last 11 games, and those losses were to Wake and Butler, two top 20 teams. Go Raiders!

If Vaughn decides he wants to play next week or on March 1, it's his decision to make.

I think it would be a huge mistake to red-shirt Vaughn. I think next year is going to be his last year at WSU regardless to if our coaches decide to not play him this year and pursue a red-shirt for him. There is no incentive for him to stay beyond next season. He is going to graduate next year and will either move onto a career in business or he will make a nice living playing ball overseas. Staying an extra year is just going to get in the way of the start to his career. If he wants to play now, play him.

Yes. He enrolled for summer classes the summer before his freshman year and has taken summer classes each year since then.

If he doesnt play this week, VD really needs to think about redshirting. No matter how hard it is for him to do it, I think he really needs to consider it.

For the third time now. HE IS ON TRACK TO GRADUATE NEXT YEAR. I work at Wright State. I'm not speculating.

For the third time now. HE IS ON TRACK TO GRADUATE NEXT YEAR. I work at Wright State. I'm not speculating. If Vaughn red-shirts, he will play an extra year as a grad student. You don't know that. No one does. A lot can change between now and then. Most of the production from this year's team graduates next year (JDG, Cory, Todd, Ronnie). If we don't bring in a great class, he might not want to return for a 5th year to play on a bad team. If Brownell takes a job at a BCS school, Vaughn might not want to come back to play for a different coach. Heck, his girlfriend might take a job across the country and want him to come along. There are all kinds of reason why he might not want to return another year.

Nutt House, why the hell didn't you just say that to begin with? You made it sound like you were speculating. Depending on what your job is at WSU, I'm not real crazy about you taking peeks at Vaughn's transcript, but whatever. Seems like invasion of privacy unless you are his academic advisor. I think you are about the only one here that hasn't figured out that I work in athletics at the NUTTER CENTER. (hence the name NUTT HOUSE). I don't have access to his transcripts. I just get to see Vaughn on a daily basis.

From reading your past posts, I thought it was pretty obvious you worked for WSU at the Nutter Center. Thanks for the update.

Well, lets hope he stays for his 5th season. "I live for today, but I want to play basketball as a career." Sounds like he doesn't want to get injured and ruin his post-collegiate career, not necessarily that he wants to stay extra seasons in Dayton. I'm only speculating, but i question whether or not he shares our motives as fans.
We as fans try to gauge whether or not he should play based on raider matters such as--would we rather increase our chances of winning out this year or have VD for two full seasons? VD may not even want to stay an extra year as he will have already graduated according to plan (nut house). Given this, he may only be red shirting to protect his future, not for the teams sake. Not at all a bad move on his part. Rather, a smart one, but I continue to ponder his motives. Plus, what if Brownell leaves after next season? If we end up with a 20+ win season this year and next year we do even better, he will likely be on his way out by the time the 10/11 season rolls around. I can't see VD staying and adjusting to a whole new coaching staff. Again lets hope, and I'm only speculating, I have no real info to provide.

Exactly If Brownell stays, I think VD would stay for his extra year of eligibility. But if Brownell leaves, I think VD leaves. Cuz whats to say that he would fit in another coaches system? I just hope it all ends up working itself out. That we do good this and we are good the next 2 years with a healthy VD. LETS GO RAIDERS

Speaking of LMFAO. I just noticed your Hoosiers are now 4-12 on the year and 0-5 in the Big 10.
