I disagree about HLN. I have watched other WSU sports which I probably would not have paid for...don't watch home men's basketball games because I'm there but, I appreciate it when other schools don't charge when we are away and I have not gone along. I listened to Chris on the radio the other day. So far, I have not paid to watch ( but, I do have Time Warner's sports pass and once in awhile a game is available that way ). Most schools only charge for their online broadcasts for revenue producing sports. The HL could still make the HLN free for all sports except men's basketball if they wanted. I'm sure they could make a nice profit if they wanted to.

We tend to have this discussion every year on the HLN. I've stated in the past that I think the HL should charge a minimum fee, lets say about $4.95 a game, or less for a longer subscription, but make it free to any season ticket holder of any sport at the universities. It's an incentive to buy season tickets to the sport you like, and you're not giving it away to those that watch online instead of buying tickets.
I also think students should get it for free by attending 1 home sporting event, and then turning in their ticket to receive a free subscription. That at least exposes them to a live game and maybe bring them back for more. Heck, you could even do that same thing but with 3 or 4 different game tickets for non-season ticket holders to get them to more games.
Another more simplistic option is to charge for only non-conference basketball games, so the schools are mostly collecting from teams fans that we are competing against.

This Christmas, I received a really cool gift that I had never really even thought about, and I just wanted to share it with some of you in the case (no pun intended) that someone out there might be interested as well. If I had known/thought about this before, I would have purchased this on my own a long time ago! There is a website called SkinIt ( www.skinit.com/skins/sports/colleges/wright_state_university/WRIGHT01 ) where you can create a cell phone case OR protective skin for virtually any current-brand phone model (among other items), and the case/skin can be made out of either a picture that you submit OR a stock logo of the team/university. Needless to say that I received a Wright State case for my iPhone 5 and it is really very cool! It's just another way for others to see the Wright State University brand as well, especially if you use your phone as often as I do out in public for work/play etc. I am sure that there are 20 other websites out there that do this same thing, I only point this one out as I know firsthand that they provide a quality product, as I now own one. I am in no way (nor do I know anyone who is) affiliated with this website. I would encourage you all to check it out! Cool stuff

Two thoughts that I would like to share, just to get them off of my chest and just because I enjoy discussing the different aspects of this University. Call it nitt-picking or call it general discussion, whatever you'd like.
1) To whomever the monkeys are that tend to our Raider Athletic website (WSUraiders.com) and their monkey AD boss; If you aren't going to have a fan feature titled "Ask the AD", PLEASE take it off of the website! The feature hasn't been updated since July 22nd, 2011, and at this point is just embarrassing. I believe that we have one of the better University Sports websites out there, and if we want to keep it that way then step #1 is to keep it updated. Mr Grant: Either take 5 minutes to answer a freaking question or to take the feature down, one or the other. PS, you have never once answered any of the several questions that I have submitted. As a future donor, Thank You.
2) It's not likely that this is often noticed, but it bothers me that our Fight Song that is played at the end of the Billy Donlon Radio Show is not a recording of our own Pep Band and/or Music Department. If you listen closely enough, it is obviously a recording of The University of Arkansas Marching or Pep Band. We have a critically acclaimed University Center of Excellence in our CELIA Arts Program (http://webapp2.wright.edu/web1/coe/category/centers-of-excellence/collaborative-education-leadership-and-innovation-in-the-arts-celia/) which encompasses our Music Department........UTILIZE IT!!
You can try and make the argument that there are "bigger things to worry about" or an argument along those lines, and sometimes there are, but truly, details matter. When you're an institute of our magnitude, and trying to maintain or become something even better, you cannot afford to overlook them. These are just 2 of many things in regards to our Athletic Department that grind my gears. Constructive criticism.

I agree that there are much bigger issues we need to worry about but I also agree we need to do a much better job with the smaller details like what you mention above. We might not have the finances to address all our bigger issues, but there is no excuse for screwing up the small details. One of my biggest small detail pet peeve is our rosters. If you look at our official website, game notes, media guide, and game day programs, many of the player's hts/wt do not match up. A few years ago Cory Cooperwood was 6-6 to 6-8 depending on which source you were looking in. Those type of errors make your athletic department look bush league.

@wrightstgameday: Billy Donlon is scheduled to call WLW 700 AM Lance McAlister tonight at 7:30.
This is a Cincinnati-based station, even though the waves go way further than the Greater Cincinnati area. This is a great station for Billy to be on.

We don't pay for Chris Collis to have a partner on away games for broadcasts due to finances. We also do not pay Chris Collins’ partners who serve as color analysts for our home radio broadcasts. Those guys are volunteer help. The only reason that Chris has a partner at home is because there are no travel expenses involved. And when he has an analyst join him for an occasional road game … that analyst is paying his own way.

Coach D has been all over the radio outlets this past week, and I've always known that he is a modest guy, but I have to say that I love how he is tempering expectations on every outlet he goes on because the reality is that we will of course, being undefeated in the HL, likely go on a losing streak here very soon (sooner than later), especially considering this 3 game stretch coming up. We are getting some excellent media just through these four home/one away games alone, I can't imagine what would happen if we somehow managed to knock off Valpo.

You say it like we're heading to Cameron Indoor Stadium. I like our chances on this road trip with the confidence and effort this team is playing with right now.

I plan on purchasing a significant amount of WSU Athletic Apparel (golf polos, tees, hoodies, under armour etc) in the coming days, and I was wondering if anyone knows how/where I can best spend the money so that it might have a chance of reaching the WSU Athletic Department directly (if even possible). For example, I'm wondering if I should hold out until the booth is set up in the Nutter at the home basketball games or if I can just purchase through the Barnes and Noble bookstore and the money spent would also reach WSU Athletics. Does anyone happen to have any idea? The apparel purchases will total a few hundred dollars altogether so if possible I'd like to see that money funneled to the Athletic Department.

I don't believe it makes a difference where you buy it if you go off campus. When a manufacturer makes anything with an NCAA school's logo, they have to go through a licensing company. The licensing company approves the product (t-shirt, mug, keychain, whatever) and issues permission for the manufacturer to use the logo for a percentage. The percentage can vary from school to school, but it's usually around 10-15% of the manufacturer's sale. For example, let's say Nike makes a WSU shirt. When Nike sells that shirt to a store like a Foot Locker or an off-campus book store, 10% of that exchange goes to WSU. All of the kickback to WSU comes from that exchange. The retailer can then charge whatever they want at that point and it won't have any further direct effect on WSU's pockets. I imagine the on-campus Barnes and Noble store and the wsuraiders.com online store have some sort of additional kickback to the university, but if you want anything different (and probably a bit more cost effective), the university's already made their money.
