LMFAO. And I thought YSU was a joke of a university before. Exactly. This would be like UWM hiring Bruce Pearl as their next President. Neither holds the academic qualifications to do the job and both are well documented cheaters. YSU has have been the laughingstock of this league sine they joined. This does nothing to change that perception.

There appears to be a growing trend towards not hiring PhD’s (as President) at institutions of higher learning. A Boston Globe article a couple of years ago stated 20% of colleges across the country have presidents from outside academia and without the “prerequisite” PhD. The Boston Globe credited that stat to the American Council on Education—Which Wright State is a member. That trend, of “non-traditional presidents,” started a while back and was noticeable as early as 2007.
In essence, it is running a business with an emphasis on fund raising and colleges and universities are looking more and more at people from outside of academia and with hands-on real-life or business experience.
The qualification to lead an academic institution is not rooted in a piece of academic paper documenting the highest level of learning has been achieved. If that were the case our friends a couple of miles east of us in Yellow Springs wouldn’t have ran their university into the ground.
Look at large, complex, and successful institutions employing lots of brain power, such as airlines and hospital networks. The requirement to lead those organizations aren’t such that one need to demonstrate via a simulator one can pilot a 747 or show detailed knowledge of open-heart surgery, which are the zenith of achievement in their respective fields.
There’s much more to it and the individual’s talents and aptitude along with relevant experience and knowledge in relation to the job’s requirements are now being given importance when taking the applicant into consideration—As they should.
Don’t take this as defense of Tressel it’s not. It is to correct the myth that only individuals with a PhD are qualified to be a College/University president.
That said, Tressel was a finalist for the Akron (President) job. His hire at Youngstown State is fully endorsed and supported by the faculty. Many faculty members knew him before he left for OSU and others have had the chance to interview him during YSU’s latest search for President. I will defer to them if they made the right choice for their university.
One good I do believe YSU will see almost immediately will be an increase in the number of donors and an overall aggregate increase in dollars donated. Will that help their men’s basketball program??
Since the Great Recession many institutions have struggled to meet financial goals, but I have a feeling with Tressel at the helm YSU will not only see an increase in athletic donor $$$ but also their overall endowment will increase. If I were to bet, I would bet the trustees are placing an emphasis on increasing the size of YSU’s endowment. After all, a Tier-two school isn’t going to improve their academic standing much at all, but they can improve their financial standing and I suspect that is the reason they chose Tressel.

As a HL fan, I wish Tressel nothing but success as a fundraiser. I hope he brings in enough cash for YSU to finally fully fund their football team so that they can get into the MAC.

Wow... This would be like Keifer Sykes leaving UWGB (in terms of what Forbes meant to CSU). It's already out there that he wants to transfer to Michigan State a la Brandon Wood. Either way, CSU's stance as the favorite in the HL took a hit. They'll still be a top 3 team in the league though.
