Unfortunately, that's true. I just looked at Oakland's roster and they only lose 2 Seniors for next year. Kampe has done a great job of bringing in some real talent. That's the best team I've seen in the HL this year. How they lost 4 games at home is hard to fathom.

They don't play defense for crap. That's why they've lost 4 games at home. If we had any sort of decent offensive approach, we could beat them. If we can sweep Valpo, let's not make this Oakland team out to be UNLV of 1990. They're a very good offensive team that sucks defensively. Valpo will beat them at the ARC.

You notice most teams that play them score more than their season avg. I don't think they worry too much about defense because they want to score. Since Donlon has been here he wants to play better defense than his opponent but don't really care about offense. Just not an exciting game to watch unless your defense fan.

I like Billy in many ways, but his emphasis on guards versus big men is beyond defending in DI ball. We have higher shooting percentages than our opponents across the board, from the field, the arc, the FT line. But our opponents have shot more than 200 FTs than us and have about 150 more than us. In close games a margin of 150is significant. We have been out rebound by about 100 boards. And the opponents have about 50more offensive boards than us as our guys break back to the other end of the court while the opponents rebound the ball and sink their rebound.Apparently our D stops when the opponents shoot the ball. Then there are the fouls. We have about 130 more fouls with 15 disqualified players, usually our big men. The opponents have zero disqualifications. All we have as backup are two freshmen.
If we should ever go to the NCAA some year with teams over loaded with guards, don't expect to win a game.

We aren't understaffed in the coaching department. We have the same number of employees working for our basketball team as every other D1 team out there. We also offer really competitive wages to our assistants. I believe there are only 2 schools in the HL that pay their assistants more than us.
The problem we have with hiring good assistant coaches is Donlon. Good assistant coaches want to be involved in game planning. Good assistant coaches want a little bit of job security. His best coaching staff he had was his first. He hired Clayton Bates who had 9 years of experience and was an associate head coach at Western Michigan before he came to WSU, Chris Moore who had 4 years of experience at Morehead State and was their recruiting coordinator, and Scoot Wood, who had no experience. Bates left after one season because he couldn't work for Donlon because Donlon wouldn't listen to any of his input. Chris Moore lasted several years but started looking for his next job within 2 years of being here for the same reason and because Donlon wouldn't let him recruit the JUCO kids Moore was known for finding while at Morehead State. You notice that what we paid our assistant coaches didn't stop us from hiring an associate head coach with 9 years of experience and a 4 year guy that was a recruiting coordinator at his last job. The difference between then and now is the word is out about Donlon. Why would anyone want to work for someone that has no desire to hear your input. Why take a job for a coach that is one more bad season away from getting canned.
I have no problem with WSU paying our coaches more, but that isn't the problem. Having an egomaniac as a head coach is.

I don't know for sure but would suspect the only input he listens to is from his father. I often wondered why the father was in coaching for so long but never seemed to be that successful. He has had a much higher turn over in assistants than the usual.
