Now it's time for Bob Grant to come up with some additional funds to try to keep Coach Lovelady. He is going to be a coach in high demand. We need to make an effort to hang onto him. I hope we can make it happen, but I'm skeptical. There will likely be some big programs throwing big money at Lovelady. Not sure we'll have the funds to match or top. I know this: Lovelady is a lot better than Ohio State's head coach. Both as a recruiter and just in general.

It won't really be a tough decision for Sean. He's projected as a second-round pick. He's gone for sure ... and rightfully so.
Next year's team will still be very good though. We'll return:
1. Morrow 2B 2. Roman SS 3. Orr LF 4. Burdick RF 5. Snyder 1B 6. Macchocci/Arthur DH (and one of those guys might play a full-time position other than DH just to get their bat in the lineup every game -- perhaps Arthur can play 3B?) 7. Weatherford CF (who was a top sub this year) 8. Giltrow C (jury is out on him because he couldn't hit a lick in limited action this year -- maybe a recruit will end up beating him out as the starter, hard to say)
Plus our pitching staff will be especially strong as we'll return:
Sampen Sexton Swaney (Triple S) Collins (who really came on last half of the season and became our best reliever) Meyer
I just wonder who our coach will be because I fully expect some big-time program to pluck Lovelady away.

Sean Murphy was taken early in the third round of the MLB Draft today by the Oakland A's. Fifth college catcher selected overall. Will get a signing bonus of over $700K. Congrats to Sean!
Also congrats to Jesse "Perfect Game" Scholtens who was selected in the 9th round by the San Diego Padres. He likely won't sign for much since college seniors don't have any leverage (signing bonus of $20K max for Jesse, IMO) but he now has his chance at pro ball. 9th round is nothing to scoff at when you consider there are 40 rounds (used to be 50).
Now let's hope Ryan Fucci goes tomorrow (rounds 11-40). And let's hope Mitch Roman comes back for his senior year as expected. I don't think he'll get drafted tomorrow, but if he does, I think/hope he'll come back.

twizman wrote: Actually, Sean was the 7th college catcher selected and the 10th overall catcher taken in the draft, but nonetheless that's a tremendous accomplishment. According to the notes from the MLB Draft tracker, it said Sean had no college scholarship offers and was a preferred walk-on his first year at WSU. What a testament to Sean and the coaching staff for going from a walk-on to a 3rd round pick in the draft. I hope we all get to see him in the "show" real soon. Congratulations to the 5 Raiders that were chose ( Sean, Jesse, Mitch, Robby, and Ryan ). I think I heard the previous high for a draft was 3. No doubt that winning doesn't hurt.

In a weird twist of events, UofL goes down in the super regionals dropping two straight games to UCSB. UCSB was down 3-0 in the bottom of the 9th and walked off on a grand slam just inside the right field fair pole. I know some of the Raider guys were rooting on UofL. But, being married to a UK wildcat, she's imposed her hatred of UofL onto me. Louisville loses 3 games at home all season, and the last 2 end their season.

Did Robby Sexton end up signing? He doesn't come up when a do a search for his minor league stats.
Sean Murphy, Mitch Roman and Jesse Scholtens are all off to impressive starts to their professional careers. All three of them putting up good numbers thus far.

Good luck to Coach Lovelady in Orlando. Do it again, Grant...I imagine the department had to see this coming so hopefully we've got a jump on the search.

BG did not offer Lovelady a raise after this last season or the season before. Especially with the $$$ being handed to other coaches and programs it had to be upsetting.

Oh the athletics department saw this coming. BG did not offer Lovelady a raise after this last season or the season before. Especially with the $$$ being handed to other coaches and programs it had to be upsetting. It is what it is. As an athletic department we only have so much money and we need to put our biggest resources in the sports that bring in revenue. If those programs are successful and make money then it brings in revenue for the other programs. As successful as baseball has been the last few years, it hasn't made a dime for the athletic department. It's actually lost quite a bit of money like most college baseball teams do. We cannot afford to pay Lovelady what he is worth. I wish we could and I know Grant wishes he could. We just cannot justify it.
