Sounds like the first guy to throw his hat in the ring is Jim Crews. Here is his resume: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_CrewsNot what I want for our next coach. His best years where at Evansville and he declined towards the end there. He completely stunk up the place at Army and inherited a great program at St. Louis and ran it into the ground. I don't even think he should be considered.

Agree. Brownell started his career under him, and you could make the extension to Donlon.
I'd like to see a fresh face to our program. Ideally, I think we need someone with D1 power conference experience. Not sure we can afford that, but it would likely be someone with a good recruiting pipeline, and used to bringing in and coaching more physical players.
If that's not an option, I think a strong assistant from a power conference is the next best thing.
I would really not like to see someone from d2, and I would really not like to see some home-grown person like Scott Woods.
Fresh face. Experience with division one recruiting. Experience with coaching with increased physicality. Those should be our requirements.

We could benefit from a high Div I coach who wants to rebuild his resume by improve on the positive parts of this program. We may have some deficiencies on the inside but we have some offensive players coming back who can now play better defense because of BD.

wsuraider09, I don't think your criteria is good enough. Grant kind of put himself in a corner with today's press release. He stated: “We aspire to be a top 100 program, but have not reached that level in the last six years. These are not unrealistic expectations. We’ve been there before, and most of the other Horizon League schools have achieved at that level since. I want us to return there. Moreover, we have no NCAA appearances, NIT appearances, or victories over ranked opponents in the last six years. We need these types of achievements to energize our fan base.”I don't think a former BCS head coach who is now a retread or current BCS assistant is going to energize our fan base. I think he needs to bring in a successful coach who is currently employed at another university. We need another Brad Brownell type hire but one that has some desire to be here more than a few years. Ron Hunter would be the home run pick in my opinion. Here is his resume: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Hunter He built the IUPUI program up and went on to Georgia State where he turned their program into a big time program in a few years. He is from Dayton. He graduated from Chaminade Julienne and played his college ball at Miami OH. He has had success recruiting the Dayton area and he would have instant name recognition which would definitely energize our fan base. The main problem with getting Hunter is he has a better salary at Georgia State and 4 more years on his contract. If Grant is serious about his above stated goals, he needs to find the money to get it done. If he thinks he is getting backlash now after firing Donlon he is in for a shit storm if he doesn't bring in a home run hire.

Agree with you completely. He talks like the checkbook is wide open. After I heard Johnny Dawkins got fired, that immediately came to mind. But figured our budget wouldn't allow us that option.
Guess we will see. Hopefully we put up...or Bob Grant will look like an even bigger fool...if that's even possible.
He wants a top 100 team...he needs to open up the checkbook.
Scott Woods won't cut it.

I will say that I don't support the firing, but my opinion obviously doesn't have any bearing on that matter. I am curious who is on Grant's radar. If he is considering a high major assistant, I would hope that he considers current Michigan Assistant Coach, and former Butler player, LaVall Jordan. Jordan has been under Coach Beilein for 6 seasons now, and I would think that he has absorbed his coaching style. He is also considered to be a strong recruiter.

Not good enough. Not by the standards Bob Grant laid out for us yesterday. He'd got an ace up good sleeve, or he's going to be the next one without a job.

We don't need a young gun here that will bolt after they get to an NCAA or two. We need to offer a 4 or 5 year contract. Bonus money for making the top 100 in RPI Rankings and or making the big dance.

For those on this board that are not former college coaches, check this sit out: sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salaries/mens-basketball/coach/These are the coaches salaries from last year's NCAA teams. Of the non-power conferences (meaning conferences that exclude the Power 5, Big East, or AAC, aka former Big East Football), the average salary for 13 mid-major teams that made the 2015 tournament and had an KenPom ranking of 90 or under was $737k. I picked 90 because Brownell's KenPom average was about 90 (88 exactly). If you take out three major outliers (Mark Few, Shaka Smart, and Gregg Marshall) that total pay for the remaining 10 coaches is $367k--those 10 teams had an average KenPom rating of 36 in 2015. For 14 mid-major teams that made the tournament in 2015, and had a KenPom ranking over 90, the average total pay was $353k. The average KenPom ranking for these teams 138. As I pointed out, Donlon's average KenPom ranking (excluding last year's injury plagued team) was 122. According to the DDN Brownell had his salary by WSU raised to $365k in 2008. That is after two years and an NCAA berth and when the team had a KenPom consistently in 85-95 range. So that is what you are looking at financially---a total pay package of $350k-$400k at a minimum to be in the same breath of most of the recognized higher mid-majors. I seriously hope that Grant has that cash lined up for the HC as well as the higher salaries they are going to probably demand for their staff. If not, then you are looking at a power-5 assistant OR a fired power-5 coach that gets a sweet separation package (who knows.....maybe Brian Gregory will be available " rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.washingtonpost.com/news/sports/wp/2016/03/09/brian-gregory-georgia-tech-stave-off-elimination-with-improbable-acc-tournament-comeback/At some point, and probably off the bat, Grant will have offer a salary commensurate with $350k or higher just to get a solid coach from a mid-major conference, and this would be in line with most teams that WSU is comparable to now.

I think Grant can get creative to give the new head coach what he wants. We are going to have to improve our base salary without a doubt. We could also put a lot of incentives that wouldn't cost us anything. 2 off the top of my head are post season bonuses and attendance bonuses. Most coaches have NCAA tournament appearance bonuses. You get a nice payday if you make the dance. The HL gets a big chunk of it but you get to keep a lot of it too. Give the coach 1/2 of it. We wouldn't be dancing or getting any of that money if it wasn't for him so it is win win. WSU gets more money and so does the coach. The same with attendance. Set a realistic goal for what attendance should be. If we exceed that split the revenue of ticket sales above our goal. Once again we would be making more from the higher attendance so it wouldn't be costing us anything. It would be pure profit. An added bonus to this is that it encourages the coach to work his butt off trying to put together a good schedule that will attract more fans. It also encourages that coach to engage with the community to try to bring in new fans.

Two new faces that intrigue me are Greg Tonagel of Indiana Wesleyan (Grant Evans transfer) and Bacari Alexander of Michigan. Tonagel just won his second NAIA DII National Championship in the last tree years. Former Valpo player with elite record. He has led Indiana Wesleyan to two national titles, five elite eight appearances and eight crossroad titles including seven straight from 2009-2015. played in four NCAA tourneys for Valpo and later became Director of Basketball Operations at Valpo. Worth taking a peek at the Indiana Wesleyan athletic site.
Another affordable guy maybe assistant Michigan coach, Bacari Alexander. The Detroit native iswas in his sixth season with Michigan this year and recruits and coaches the post players. Spent six seasons under Perry Watson at Detroit and he has developed over 80 per cent of his former front court players to gain opportunities to play professional basketball at various levels. Former Harlem Globetrotter and active in the Detroit area as motivational speaker promoting optimism and responsibility. Go to Michigan athletic site.
I like both with their Horizon League/Midwest backgrounds. Everyone knows how Michigan's style of basketball is played. However, Tonagel is a defensive coach that offensively shoots the three. I believe both coaches are worth a look at and are affordable to WSU. Just my thoughts.

If Valpo is the class of the league, then one way to make a decent, but not big, splash, is get a favorite son that many seem to think would be Bryce Drew's successor.

But I think Grant will have to do that unless some big donors step up. Problem is some of the high quality guys were targeting may still want a higher base than want WSU lately has been willing to start with.
