It would be less concerning if we only had a couple spots to fill. 5 open scholarships at end of April isn't ideal though. 1 week left until the portal closes That’s for players (including grad transfers) to get into the portal. They have until the school year starts to actually enroll into a school. So it could be awhile before we have any definitive answers. Hopefully patience is a virtue.

I'm glad I'm not the only one concerned. I've always heard “no news is good news”. I think in this situation it only means no news. I’m concerned the transfers are concerned about lack of head coach experience. I don’t think that really has much to do with our lack of commitments. Like I have said several times now, I was hoping that Clint would have hired an experienced assistant to fill the 3rd coaching spot. No one on our staff is an experienced coach when it comes to the portal and utilizing NIL. Nagy didn’t like the portal and didn’t really have his staff utilize it much so Sargent, Bere, and Trice have limited experience with it. Cole and Jaaron have no real recruiting experience let alone portal recruiting experience. Recruiting high school kids is like a guy courting a girl in the 1960s. Recruiting the portal is like speed dating or looking for a hook up on Tinder. Our staff is trying to build relationships with kids when other schools are calling kids up and just offering them a scholarship and NIL bag. Our staff needs to start landing some kids to get the ball rolling in the right direction. They aren’t going into next season with 5 open spots. They are going to use those scholarships one way or another. They need to land some quality players. We can’t afford to let all the good players commit elsewhere while we are trying to get their shit together. We can’t afford to fill out the roster with guys that can’t contribute like Bo Myers.

Some Raider fans talking at the baseball game said Conner was visiting this weekend. I think they were parents of some of our baseball players but otherwise I don’t know how reliable of a source they are. Thought I’d share for what it’s worth. He a 🔒 Sounds like he'll be in the area, but not playing for WSU.

Well, this sucks. We have 5 scholarships to fill and our staff can’t land a local kid they had recruited out of high school. We need to land someone soon and get some momentum going.

I believe we are the only team in the Horizon yet to get anyone out of the portal. Very concerning, especially with only 5 guys who have logged any minutes in a college game and only 3 who have started 5+ games.

Conner going to UD is not surprising at all. He went to a private catholic school his whole life until he went away to Marshall. He wanted to come back home and play locally. Right now, there really is no comparison between us and the school across town. They have have a better team, in a much better conference. They have better facilities and a much bigger fan base. Most importantly, they have a good NIL situation going on for their basketball program. The centerville kid that went to Furman was much more concerning to me. If we are losing local kids to schools like Furman, we could be in some trouble.
The positive news, if there is any, is that the portal isn’t even closed yet. I read on one of the transfer portal sites that there are currently over 2000 kids that entered the portal so far and less than 25% have found a new home. There are still unsigned JUCO, prep school, and high school kids out there too. The staff still has a lot of good options available. They just need to start getting it done. Quite honestly, if they don’t and we have a disaster of a year next year, I think Clint’s tenure will be very very short and Wright State will end up bringing in a new AD and let them pick their own new coach. Our intermediate AD and entire Mens coaching staff is relying on how well they finish out this class. I’m sure they understand the importance and are working tirelessly on it.

It's pretty exhausting to be a wsu fan. With NIL and our lack of success in the portal I'm afraid it's going to get more and more exhausting. Even if our freshmen are great, we are going to lose them the following year to bigger programs. Let's just be real about that. I'm not sure how to navigate the portal but damn this is brutal. The portal might still be opened but at some point it will just be d2 players that should only be walk ons. Guess there is still time but it's not looking good.

It feels more and more like we’re a Single A minor league team and just waiting around to see who gets called up. Can’t blame the players at all, the money has been crazy getting thrown around, but really hard for the sport.

The portal might still be opened but at some point it will just be d2 players that should only be walk ons. Guess there is still time but it's not looking good. You might want to just take a step back away from the ledge and let things play out before you jump. Everything isn’t all doom and gloom. We have 5 spots to fill but quite honestly none of us have any clue as to what our staff has been doing and how close they are to filling out the roster. We have lost some guys to the portal the last few years but we have kept more than we lost and most that left were encouraged to look elsewhere. Out of they guys we wish we would have kept, Basille is the only one that had any type of success and the team he transferred to didn’t even make it into the tournament. I’m sure our staff keeps pointing that out to the players they want to keep. This fall, there was an article about the portal from last year. 35% of the kids that entered the portal last spring still didn’t have a new home as late as August. I assume we will see similar numbers this year. I also think it is just a matter of time before there is some collective bargaining agreement put in place where there is going to be a salary cap put in place and kids are going to have to sign actual contracts with the school so this transfer mania will slow down. If that doesn’t happen I think you will see 2 big issues going forward. Kids won’t be able to graduate because it is almost impossible to stay on track to graduate when you bounce from school to school and each school’s degree requirements are different. The bigger issue for these kids is that these collectives are going to go belly up because donors are going to get sick of this mercenary bs. You are already seeing this now at even some of the bigger schools. Several Michigan football players just entered the portal and it was reported that they did so because their NIL checks were bouncing that they received from their collective. I don’t know what college athletics is going to look like in a few years but it won’t be this because this model is not sustainable.
