It's pretty exhausting to be a wsu fan. With NIL and our lack of success in the portal I'm afraid it's going to get more and more exhausting. Even if our freshmen are great, we are going to lose them the following year to bigger programs. Let's just be real about that. I'm not sure how to navigate the portal but damn this is brutal. The portal might still be opened but at some point it will just be d2 players that should only be walk ons. Guess there is still time but it's not looking good. You might want to just take a step back away from the ledge and let things play out before you jump. Everything isn’t all doom and gloom. We have 5 spots to fill but quite honestly none of us have any clue as to what our staff has been doing and how close they are to filling out the roster. We have lost some guys to the portal the last few years but we have kept more than we lost and most that left were encouraged to look elsewhere. Out of they guys we wish we would have kept, Basille is the only one that had any type of success and the team he transferred to didn’t even make it into the tournament. I’m sure our staff keeps pointing that out to the players they want to keep. This fall, there was an article about the portal from last year. 35% of the kids that entered the portal last spring still didn’t have a new home as late as August. I assume we will see similar numbers this year. I also think it is just a matter of time before there is some collective bargaining agreement put in place where there is going to be a salary cap put in place and kids are going to have to sign actual contracts with the school so this transfer mania will slow down. If that doesn’t happen I think you will see 2 big issues going forward. Kids won’t be able to graduate because it is almost impossible to stay on track to graduate when you bounce from school to school and each school’s degree requirements are different. The bigger issue for these kids is that these collectives are going to go belly up because donors are going to get sick of this mercenary bs. You are already seeing this now at even some of the bigger schools. Several Michigan football players just entered the portal and it was reported that they did so because their NIL checks were bouncing that they received from their collective. I don’t know what college athletics is going to look like in a few years but it won’t be this because this model is not sustainable. I agree with this. Step back and see what happens, I mean our coach has been in the job only a couple weeks, and we really have no idea whether they have several kids close to signing, or no real prospects. If the roster still looks like 7 kids come fall, then we can get concerned. Fans fretting over the offseason never makes sense in any sport at any level -- leave that to the coaches and/or GMs (at pro level) to go get players. As for where college sports are heading, my fear is the power 5 (4 since the PAC 10 disappeared) is about to become the power 2 (BIG and SEC), and the top 40-60 football powers are going to take their money and go home by branching out to form a new division that excludes the have not schools. Unclear whether they will allow the basketball only power schools (Big East, Gonzaga, etc) to go with them, but schools from the lesser conferences are likely to be relegated to the equivalent of D2, much like 1 AA football (now called FCS). The power conferences are effectively already doing this thru increasing the number of conference games (in both football and basketball), leaving no room on their schedules for the lessor schools. At some point, they will make that official and try to kick the lessor schools out of the football playoff and the NCAA basketball tourney (by creating their own tourney, separate from the NCAA). The finances are just too big, and it is too tempting to try to limit those payouts to only the power schools since the big money TV contracts are based on those conferences and big name schools.

The one theory of the SEC and Big Ten combining into a 32 team conglomerate is interesting. Have heard that the SEC and BIG 10 schools would only play each other in all sports. This could work out to Wright States advantage. Take away those 32 Fat Cats and WSU is on a much more even playing field with the remaining 320 plus NCAA Division 1 schools.

Yea it’s gonna be rough next year. Guess the hiring of former Alter star Jaaron Simmons as an assistant didn't seal the deal.

I have some concerns also. But looking at portal there are some good players who have just entered and many f the top programs are full. This may give us a shot at some better players needing a place to go. I don't mind getting someone with good talent needing a place to play and do well to move up next year One concern I have is getting good high school recruits next year with unproven head coach. There is still some good talent in the portal with dwindling spots available.

I agree Dr J, I reviewed the ESPN top 100 portal players and 36 did not find a home yet. Until the top players find a home some of the mid-tier players might sit still.

www.post-gazette.com/sports/high-school-basketball/2024/04/30/ethan-morton-purdue-butler-colorado-state-transfers/stories/202404290066After the season, Morton wasted little time in entering the transfer portal. Duquesne and Robert Morris contacted him, although he said connections with those two schools didn’t go far. A few schools in the Atlantic 10, MAC and Horizon League also contacted him. But he decided that he liked Colorado State, Massachusetts and Wright State the best and made visits to all three schools. “Colorado State just hit me out of the blue,” Morton said. “I talked to them and sort of felt a connection to one of their assistants. When I talked to their head coach [Niko Medved], I felt more of the connection. I did a zoom call with them. Then when I visited, it was just unbelievable. Fort Collins is awesome. When I finished my three visits, I took a little time to reflect. It came down to kind of the same in high school for me and that was being able to trust the head coach a lot and them having belief in me. I’m super, super excited.”

Northwestern State transfer Chase Forte is visiting Thursday.. Unless someone comes in at the last minute and drops a bag in his lap like the Jacob Conner situation, I like our chances with Forte. I also like Forte. He is the type of athlete at guard we need to be bringing in. I hope by the end of the week we are one down and 4 to go when it comes to our scholarship situation and we can start building some momentum.
