Boys Basketball Coffman outlook bright after summer play
Thursday, November 30, 2006
By THAD PLUMLEY Villager Contributor
Dublin Coffman High School boys basketball coach Jamey Collins saw his team excel in summer tournaments, camps and shootouts to the point he couldn't wait for this season to start.
Now it's finally here -- and Collins is hoping that strong play in the sun transfers to success this winter.
"I saw things that guys did in the summer that really excited me," Collins said. "The guys were doing good things against good competition. A lot of them did it at the junior-varsity level last year and then at the varsity level in the summer. Now, we're hoping they stay focused, work hard and do it again."
The Shamrocks finished 15-9 last season after reaching a Division I district championship for the third-consecutive time.
Coffman returns five regulars from a year ago. Seven to eight newcomers will round out the squad that should have a sound game inside and outside.
The Shamrocks had good balance a year ago and it helped them overcome key injuries throughout the regular season. In fact, Coffman didn't have its full roster until the regular-season finale. With everyone healthy, the Shamrocks reached the district championship where they lost to Brookhaven 50-49. It marked the third postseason setback in a row to the Bearcats.
Coffman had three seniors a year ago, all of whom started at times. The group was led by three-year starter Robby Gardiner, who averaged 8.4 points and 3.7 assists. Despite missing 13 games, he was first-team all-OCC Buckeye for the second-consecutive year.
The other graduates were Frank Budde (9.7 points, team-high 5.3 rebounds, honorable-mention all-league) and Sam Stough, (6.0 points).
"The seniors we lost were good players," Collins said. "But all of them were injured at one point last year, so we had a lot of guys get to play a lot. It was tough, but we have guys with experience now. They got to have some success and that's great."
The Shamrocks went 5-5 in the OCC-Buckeye last season to finish third behind Reynoldsburg (10-0) and Hilliard Davidson (7-3) and ahead of Westland (4-6), Westerville North (3-7) and Thomas Worthington (1-9).
The returnees are led by junior Scott Stucky, a 6-foot-2 guard who averaged a team-high 10.5 points and was second-team all-league. He made 41.1 percent of his 3-pointers to rank eighth in central Ohio.
Stucky was a big part of the postseason run, averaging 17.2 points in the tournament. He scored 29 with six 3-pointers in a 70-40 victory over Groveport in the second round.
"Scott had a good spring and summer and is showing a lot of promise," Collins said. "He's worked on running the offense and worked on playing without the ball -- he's worked on all parts of his game."

Scott Stucky is also a defensive leader for their state playoff football team.
Davidson's title leaves 'Rocks pondering what might have been By IAN MARA
Dublin Coffman junior Trey Fairchild rumbles down the sideline for a touchdown during the Shamrocks' postseason tournament win over Gahanna Lincoln.
For 24 minutes on Nov. 17, Coffman kicked the state champ's collective rear ends.
Kicked those rear ends up and down the field, putting up yards and points through the air and on the ground, seemingly at will.
The margin was 13 points, but with a play or two here or there it could easily have been twice that.
In fact as the first half of the Region 3 championship game ended, the feeling in the press box at Upper Arlington seemed not to be whether Coffman would beat Hilliard Davidson, but by how many points.
But as it did over each of the last three weekends of the Ohio postseason tournament, Davidson rose to the occasion and reversed its fortunes. The Wildcats' offense dominated the second half and scored three unanswered touchdowns for the stunning victory.
A short 14 days later they were hoisting the Division I state trophy as Central Ohio's second big-school champion in more than 30 years. Nice for Davidson, to be sure.
But where does that leave the Shamrocks?
"It was kind of mixed feelings for me," said junior cornerback Scott Stucky of watching the state final on television. "To know you went toe-to-toe with the best of them is nice. But you are also thinking that could have been us.
"We were just a few plays away."
With Davidson's losing the bulk of a roster which has dominated area football for two years, Coffman certainly has the look of the area's next powerhouse.
Led by one of the country's top tackles, Coffman returns the core of its offense.
Mike Adams, who has said he is leaning towards playing at Ohio State, returns for his senior year. Also back will be Coffman's top two receivers and its top running back. Players responsible for 31 of the team's 45 touchdowns this year return.
Though two-year starting quarterback Zak Kristan graduates, back-up Zack Stoudt (21 for 32, 187 yards) played meaningful minutes in seven games, including in the team's final two playoff games.
"The offense struggled at times this year," Stucky said. "I think they will definitely be looking to change that."
Stucky is one of four returning starters on a defense which loses its entire front four. But both Stucky and head coach Mark Crabtree say they have confidence in the players expected to fill those holes
"We maybe a little lankier, a littler taller on defense," said Crabtree. "But on the flipside we may end up being a faster defense."
Stucky said he has no doubts about what the team's goal is for next season.
"The team's goal is definitely to get back to where it should be, which is the final four," he said. "I don't think it 's too early to talk about. We have to set our goals high if we want to be a good team."
Coffman has not played in the state semfinals since 2001, Crabtree's first year in Dublin. And the coach knows that making it your goal is just one part of the process.
"A lot of coaches have that as their goal," said Crabtree. "But it has to be a by-product of how you work in the off-season. A lot of teams set that as their goal and don't have a clue how to get there.
"The fact that we were that close with Davidson twice, I think the kids feel we're close. If we can take care of the little things along the way and make sure we get tougher and better in some areas, maybe we can achieve some of our goals."

I'll add some love.......common Scott, join the good guys in Green and Gold!! We've got some height now, so we need some guards who can shoot! Plus it's less than an hour away from home. I can already see the current frosh getting better and gaining confidence. This coaching staff can get the best out of you.

Scott Stucky sounds like the real deal. Wow, it seems weird that we are recruiting 08 players already.
A perimeter shooting guard like Stucky would thrive big time in a motion offense. I hope we start bring in players of this high of caliber under Brownell.

I hope we start bring in players of this high of caliber under Brownell. Its never too early to recruit and as far as I know we are finished with the '07 recruiting class. I plan to see Stucky play this winter and look forward to seeing what he can do. All I've read and heard is very encouraging. Come on Scott, you look good in green at Coffman and would look even better in green as a Raider!

Scott Stucky is a Vaughn Duggins clone with a more consistent 3 point shot. He would be a great addition to the Green and Gold.
