Raiders Visit Fairborn School Oct. 2, 2007 Six student-athletes from the Wright State University men's basketball team took a break from classes to visit Fairborn (OH) Intermediate School last Friday (Sept. 28). At the monthly STARRS assembly, the players talked to the students about the importance of their own education as they were growing up, their responsibilities as student-athletes and encouraged the youngsters to strive to achieve their goals. The Raiders that attended the event were Ronnie Thomas, Vaughn Duggins, Will Graham, John David Gardner, Scottie Wilson and Todd Brown as well as Director of Basketball Operations Scott Woods. The 2007 Horizon League Champions will take to the court next Friday (Oct. 12) for their first preseason workout. The Raiders finished last season with a 23-10 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1993. wsuraiders.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/100207aab.html

I think the problem is the DDN more than Katz. Katz wrote the HL preview for Lindys and I think he did a pretty good job. He also picked WSU to finish second. I think the real problem is the editor at the DDN. I think they edit his articles for size and cut out way too much content.

I'm all for the merger if it gets them out of the Horizon League. The MAC can have them. CSU actually has more upside than YSU. I know that's not saying much but CSU's coach (can't remember his name but no one knows it in Cleveland either so its ok) has the potential to bring in a lot more talent than YSU. I don't think either program has much upside potential. Neither university supports their program sufficiently and neither program has any kind of fanbase to support itself. Since joining the HL, YSU has averaged 2552 fans a game. In that same span, CSU has averaged 2272. Attendance #s like that are not going to generate enough money to run a winning program.

Merge Cleveland State and U of Akron? That's the buzzPosted by Janet Okoben September 20, 2007 An idea to shake up the state's college system could combine Cleveland State University and the University of Akron and bring a medical school to downtown Cleveland. Some of the talk involves moving the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy, known as NEOUCOM, from Portage County or expanding its Rootstown-based campus. Combining CSU and UA would eliminate overlapping programs and administrative jobs, and the two schools would then function under a single leader. The two people with the ability to make these ideas happen, Gov. Ted Strickland and his higher-education chancellor, Eric Fingerhut, would not comment Thursday on what others familiar with the discussions say has a real chance of happening. Fingerhut is in the midst of developing a master plan for the state's higher-education system, which was recently named the University System of Ohio. He did acknowledge that big changes are needed here. "There's pretty broad consensus that the status quo in Northeast Ohio is not acceptable," Fingerhut said. "The optimal solution will involve some significant changes to what we're currently doing because we're not getting the maximum benefit of the state's investment in higher education in Northeast Ohio." Fingerhut said he's listening to all ideas, but wouldn't talk about specifics. "I'm not there yet, and in any event it would be a shared vision, not my own vision, because the only way to be successful is for it to be a shared vision among civic leaders and higher education leaders and community leaders in Northeast Ohio, so I work on it every day," Fingerhut said. "We're a ways off from having any recommendations." A state-funded public medical school could share research dollars and talent with the medical school at Case Western Reserve University, a private institution. It could build on the region's already strong hospitals and medical services. CSU President Michael Schwartz and UA President Luis Proenza both said they had heard a number of ideas involving their schools, but nothing definite. Proenza has written extensively on what he calls higher education as an industry in transition. A group called the Northeast Ohio Universities Collaboration and Innovation Study Commission has been meeting monthly since March to pitch ideas on improving higher education. The group, made up of university and business leaders, has until December to submit ideas to Fingerhut. One member, Cleveland businessman Richard Pogue, proposed relocating NEOUCOM to a major city. Strickland also would not comment on specifics, but said much change is possible. "I am encouraging Eric to be creative in his approach and to not leave anything off the table necessarily at this stage," he said. www.leaguelineup.com/forumsdetail.asp?sid=645810089&url=letsgovikes&itemid=2381825

I would be surprised if we don't sign at least one in the early signing period. I don't care who it is off that list. I trust our coaching staff.

Butler - They will miss Crone and Lickliter, but they have enough returners and a good enough recruiting class to finish first. They won't dominate like last year. WSU - We do have the best coach in the league, IMO. I like how we match up with the rest of the league with our newly acquired size and depth. UWM - They could just as easily finish in first as the could third. They had some good young guards last year with only Paige Paulsen underneath. This year they add transfer Torre Johnson and a few other talented forwards. They are still small inside, but very athletic. Green Bay - They have a pretty good core of returning players and a good recruiting class. Poor coaching drops them down to fourth place. Valpo - They have a very good coach and a decent returning team, but they don't have enough to compete day in and day out in the HL yet. Loyola - I agree with Willie. Polka and Young are going to struggle without Schilb and Kou spreading the defense out. Cleveland State - They have a long way to go. YSU - They lost a lot to graduation. Detroit - They lost Covile and didn't add anyone. UIC - This program is a mess.

Mark Anderson is a 6-8 forward who graduated from Dunbar in 2006. I heard he wanted to play for Wright State, but didn't have the grades to qualify.

Does anyone know if Mark Anderson will be on the team this year as a walk on? There was talk last year that he was sitting out as a nonqualifier and would be on the team this year. I haven't heard anything about him in some time.

One thing that stood out after I took a second look at our schedule is that we are in the final year of contracts with almost everyone we play this year. We have to replace almost our entire nonconference schedule for 2008/09.
2007/08
COASTAL CAROLINA
MARSHALL
@ Marist
BRADLEY MIAMI
ST. BONAVENTURE
@ Cal State Fullerton
Dr. Pepper Classic (Chattanooga, Belmont, Murray)
PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE @ Bracket Buster
So we will have to replace 8 out of 11 games next year. The only good news is that we already have 3 home games set up for next year. Miami (OH) will be back at the Nutter Center next year since we played there 2 years in a row. We have a home game versus whoever we play in this year's Bracket Buster game. We will also have a home Bracket Buster game next year. That leaves a lot of work for our coaches to do for next season.

I'm disappointed. I was hoping for at least one big name opponent. At least JDG will be available for the entire season.
