Raiders Join #2 Ranked Purdue and Southern Illinois in the 2010 Chicago Invitational Challenge November 26-27 at the Sears Centre Arena
June 2, 2010
The Fifth Annual Chicago Invitational Challenge at the Sears Centre Arena will include Big Ten power Purdue University, Southern Illinois University, Wright State University, the University of Richmond, Austin Peay State University, Oakland University, Southern University, and Charleston Southern University.
Wright State, 20-12 a year ago, is now under the new leadership of Chicago native and first year head coach Billy Donlon. WSU will pursue its fifth straight 20-win season with the return of All-Horizon League performer senior guard Vaughn Duggins (14.2 ppg).
"The Chicago Invitational Challenge has afforded us two home games against opponents that will likely compete for their respective league championships," Donlon said. "We will need the full support of Raider Nation in order to be successful. The ability to play in Chicago, a neutral site, against consistent NCAA tournament teams will be of great benefit to our program."
First round opponents and Chicago pairings will be announced at a later date.
The Boilermakers from Purdue (29-6) received some great news last month as senior guard and All-Big Ten performers E'Twaun Moore (16.4 ppg) and forwards JaJuan Johnson (15.5 ppg) have decided to return for their senior seasons. Senior forward Robbie Hummel (15.7 ppg), who will be returning off season ending knee surgery, will make this trio one of the nation's best. These returning starters have Purdue ranked as high as #2 in pre-season polls and are one of the favorites to contend for a national title.
Southern Illinois returns three starters from last year's team that finished 15-15, led by senior forward Carlton Fay. Fay averaged 12.0 points and 3.4 rebounds, while shooting .381 from 3-point range. Also returning are junior guard Justin Bocot (9.1 points) and sophomore center Gene Teague (6.1 points, 4.6 rebounds), who was named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year.
The Spiders from the University of Richmond (26-9) coming off its best season in the history of the program and its first NCAA appearance since 2004, return Atlantic 10 player of the year and All-American honorable mention point guard Kevin Anderson (17.8 ppg). Pre-season ranked #21, the Spiders are one of the favorites to win the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship.
Rounds one and two will be played at Purdue, Southern Illinois, Wright State, and Richmond with the final rounds during Thanksgiving Nov. 26-27 at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates.
