I'm sure our conference tournament will fare much better... Um... when was this photo taken? The game had a paid attendance of 20,491, i.e. a sellout. There were empty seats and they were giving tickets away, but this photo isn't the reality. And remember that the Pistons haven't been a hot ticket in Detroit for a while -- they've missed the playoffs in 7 of the last 8 years and we're 25th in the NBA in attendance last year. The Horizon will probably close off the upper bowl. It's a big arena, so even with that there will be empty seats. OTOH, last year's tournament was the best attended Horizon tournament in a long time, more than double that of the last year it was held on campuses, and this year's will almost certainly draw more. It's all the perspective

Maybe a little about perspective and a little about spin. NKU shows their attendance for the final at a little more than 5,900. The last time WSU had the final ( on short notice ) it was almost 7,800. So, last year at the HL tourney what figure are you using? The entire tournament? Men only?
Last night, Luke Kennard didn't play although he expected to be out there. Apparently, the coach is trying to teach him a lesson about defense. Anyway, I looked at some things about the Pistons game and the box score didn't have attendance. An article mentioned the place was about 2/3's filled.
I agree that I expect this year's HL tourney to do better with the new arena. Hope it does.

Tons of articles out there calling out how empty the arena was at last night's game. And, yes, the Pistons were asked about their attendance figure as clearly there weren't 20,491 fans in the bowl. They stuck to their number--even though at 5 PM last night they were giving away free tickets--and they had to spin it that many of the 20,491 fans were experiencing the arena's numerous amenities - clubs, restaurants, bars, interactive displays, memorabilia, etc. and not in their seats. Right...
FWIW, the Red Wings home opener looked like it was only half filled too. They used the same excuse--That the fans were just so intrigued by the bars and novelty shops they couldn't find their seats. SMH.

It's all the perspective That is spin doctor bull shit. The numbers you are quoting are the combined attendance for all of the men's and women's games for the entire tournament. It's pretty easy to say you have the best attended tournament when you are counting twice as many games as any other HL tournament ever since the men's and women's games have never been combined before. The only game that matters is the HL championship game that is nationally televised. The game last year was no where close to the best attended championship game in a long time. In fact it was one of the least attended games we have had in a long time and it looked even worse on TV because the game was played in such a large arena and it made the attendance look even worse.

Those are the numbers reported by the NCAA for the men's tournament. There are a lot of people who decided in advance that the tournament in Detroit would be a disaster, and it's obvious that no amount of evidence will shake them from that pre-ordained conclusion. The bottom line is that the Horizon tournament paid attendance is up. You may not like it, and in a huge arena like Joe Louis or Little Ceasar's the crowd may still look small. But the tournament hasn't been a disaster; anyone with any brains knows that you must give this kind of thing time to build ("Arch Madness" wasn't built in a year), and when all is said and done attendance will probably be up again this year. If OU reaches the final it will explode.

If OU reaches the final it will explode. That right there is the problem. The only way attendance for the HL finals will look like a success in Detroit is for either Detroit or Oakland to make the finals. Arch madness is successful no matter who makes the finals because fans in that conference travel. HL fans don't travel well and the ones that do don't want to go to Detroit in March. So I fully expect this years HL finals to be a ghost town on national TV again because Detroit sucks and Oakland has only won 1-2 tournament games the entire time they have been in the HL. Hell maybe this is their year and they can win 2 games. And for the record, I don't want the HL tournament to fail. It hurts our conference image which hurts my school so I hope I am wrong about this.

Oakland's Jaylen Hayes will miss the first four games of the season due to academics. That's a bit of a misnomer. What it really is is another prime example of why the NCAA is its own worst enemy. Full of incompetence and eggheads that are destroying the organization from within. The NCAA ruled that Hayes "failed to make satisfactory progress toward a degree" because he won't take 18 credit hours of classes towards his degree between the start of fall semester and by the time of spring commencement. That part is correct. However, the reason that Mr. Hayes isn't on pace to take 18 credit hours of classes this academic years is because he is scheduled to GRADUATE in December! He will earn his degree in "Human Resources Development." Something the NCAA is clearly in need of... The NCAA originally declared him ineligible for the entire fall semester, but Oakland appealed and the NCAA cut it down to 4 games. 3 of those games should be W's for Oakland, but the 4th game is a Syracuse...potentially a W with Hayes, but probably not without him. That's too bad 'cause that could be a resume' builder for Oakland and help with their seeding come selection Sunday.

Just did little curiosity check to see how the HL is doing statistically this year so I went to sports-reference.com. It, uh..it could be better. Here is every HL player in the top 20 of any statistical category:
Justin Mitchell tied for 6th with 3.3 steals per game, 7th in steal% at 6.5
Kendrick Nunn, Oakland senior - Tied for 15th in points per game and 17th in minutes per game.
Tyree Robinson, YSU freshman - tied for 18th in 2-point % with 16 fg attempts to his name.
Jaleel Hogan, Detroit senior - tied for 13th with 21 total personal fouls
Garrett Covington, YSU freshman, 19th in true shooting percentage at .782, 12th in offensive rating
So that's what we've got right now. Everyone has fallen off from last year. Dixson has gone from being a top tier scorer to 14.3 ppg. Odiase is 59th in the country in blocks per game. Others have graduated, transferred, or changed leagues. Mitchell and Nunn are the truth, but there's not a lot after them. More on this story as it develops (and hopefully improves) throughout the season.
