If they are going to limit the Horizon Tournament to 4 teams why should the NCAA start out with 64. Should be conference tournament champion that goes to the NCAA and that is it. It used to be that way....years...decades ago, but the NCAA expanded. However, the HL could easily send the regular season champ to the tourney as the auto-qualifier. All the HL has to do is put it up for a vote. The IVY did that up until a couple of years ago...no conference tourney...regular season winner goes.

What if you have whole slew of teams at .500. That would muddy the waters getting into tie breakers to decide the top 4. I could see a top 6 with the top 2 seeds getting a bye would make it a little quicker and make sure the better team makes the dance.

With ties (2-way) the IVY simply had a one-game playoff. I believe home court was simply picked by a coin-flip.
There are really only 2 reasons to have a conference tournament. 1) is $$$. Big time conferences simply use it as a money-maker. 2) Bid stealing. Back when the HL was good (Butler days) we stole 2 bids. 2007--Wright State. 2009--Cleveland State. BU received an at-large selection both years.
IMO, the reason the Horizon LeCrone wants only a 4-team tournament (if rumor is true) is because 1) the HL can't make money and 2) the Horizon LeCrone has sunk so far down it's impossible to steal a bid, so might as well try and protect the 14 or 15 seed-line from becoming a play-in game and the negative connotation that comes along with that tag.

Unpopular opinion here, but I'm all for it. Every few years we have a 7 or 8 seed shock a 1 or 2 seed in the league tournament. What are we more likely to be looking down the road...the 8 seed pulling off the upset or the 1 seed being stunned.
That's exactly why I'd support keeping the lower seeded teams out. With our staff, facilities, and budget, there is no fathomable reason that we aren't consistently at the top of this league. Let's better our chances on getting to the big dance.
I also support going back to a 1 seed hosting tournament. It's a better atmosphere, it is certainly better on tv, it draws more money for the home team, and it's a chance to stir up ticket sales and recruits.
I've yet to see a reason this is anything but a slam dunk for this program.

I agree with '09 and I'm not so sure it's all that unpopular. Felton is bitching 'cause that's what he does. Every coach that's not in the top 8, 6 or 4 will. They could go 0-18 in the regular season, but if they win the conference tournament and go to the NCAA they'll keep their job...and probably get a bonus too. And, like hh said I like a field of 6. If this rumor is true, that would be a good compromise. Give the top-2 a bye, but in this league if you're not in the top 6 you don't deserve to be given a chance to get lucky and somehow win the tournament so you can embarrass the rest of the members on national TV by being exploited by the #1 seed.

HoriZone Roundtable 52 | Peaking at the (W)right Time. Some language in here. Listen at your own risk. sportshax.com/podcast/hr/horizone-roundtable-52-peaking-at-the-wright-time/[/quotePanther U has been a great writer and resource for the league for years. Every time he’s posted here it’s been a nice addition to the board. I cannot stand these two talking over each other the entire time. Their hand offs are atrocious, and the language certainly isn’t SFW. Panther U and I are in full agreement about going back to the one seed hosting, and he makes several great points here. Nice to see someone talking about our league. Learned more here than reading other teams boards hand over fist.

All about as I expected, but I thought Wampler would get serious consideration for 6th man, although maybe he did.
Bob Grant said on Twitter than 6 awards is a team record.
Record years for post-season awards for both our Raider roundball teams. Pretty damn impressive.

I’m going to move my responses to HL awards over to here from men’s basketball news thread but reply to hhgreen from the news thread. I agree that next seasons expectations will be even higher than they were this year and I think that will be tough for the team for a while but after time, I hope the guys will learn how to thrive under pressure and turn it into culture, I can see that starting to happen. But with those expectations COY will become harder, true. That will start to depend on what the other coaches do because mike Davis isn’t going to have the expectations we have but could do worse than us and still be more impressive. One thing I’ve wanted to say for a while that seems appropriate now is that Bob Grant deserves an insane amount of credit the past couple years. Nagy has clearly been a home run, Merriweather is as well, the changing of the guard on the baseball team while staying successful is notable as well. Wasn’t our men’s soccer coach in his first season this year and we were ranked most of the season? The new volleyball coach has some ways to go but just last season alone saw some good progress. Congratulation to everyone who made received All League Honors. Really glad Malachi made the All-Freshman team. It's nice the rest of the league saw what we were seeing. It was nice Parker was recognized for the little thing he did that doesn't show up in the box score. My only disappointment is Cole isn't on this list of awards. If they had an award for glue or hustle he would win it hands down.

Credit to the AD +1 on the Grant comment. I wouldn't worry about Davis winning COY. His lack of control and meltdowns is going to hurt his chances.

Agreed. Grant certainly made the (w)right choice. Reports were the other two finalists were Marty Simmons (since fired from Evansville) and Joe Dooley who got the East Carolina job this year but is having a terrible season.
Congrats to all our award winners! Very glad to see Parker take home some hardware this year.

Kent State pays their baseball coach a combined $315,000/year.
