A little closer in the 2nd game but, 4-3 win. 40 wins on the season.

And with that, we have wrapped up the league title.

The Raiders are at 40 wins (38 Div I wins) which is significant. Raider Gang will get to 40 Div I wins in the HL Tournament. Getting to 40 wins is half of the puzzle to getting an at-large bid and getting a higher seed in the Regionals. The other half is an RPI under 40. Unlike basketball which abandoned the metric last year, RPI is the starting place for the NCAA Baseball Selection Committee as they work out which teams will be invited, which teams will host and what the seeding will be.
The formula weighs a team’s winning percentage (25%), opponents’ winning percentage (50%) and opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage (25%). There is extra value for a road win and less value for a victory at home.
RPI “snubs” happen every year. Kentucky missed at 30 last year. The first four teams out, according to the committee, were Northeastern (35), Dallas Baptist (36), Troy (39) and Oklahoma State (41). The first four missing in 2017 were South Carolina (32), Connecticut (38), Miami (41) and Old Dominion (50).
One metric the committee has prioritized in its at-large picks is success within the conference.
Kentucky’s sweet RPI from a season ago was hurt by a 13-17 mark in the SEC, and the NCAA field included only one team with a losing league record. Another team among the first four left out, Arizona, held an RPI of 26 but went 14-16 in the Pac-12.
South Carolina (32) just missed in 2017 after going 13-17 in its conference. Same for North Carolina (10) in 2016. Same for UNC (26), Georgia Tech (37) and Alabama (44), which were sub-.500 in league play in 2015.
Isolating the “nonconference” portion of strength of schedule is used as a metric to measure the quality of a school’s record. Of course, teams have to win enough of those games for it to matter.
A school’s record against top-100 RPI teams is a good reference point. Ohio State qualified last year while 55th in nonconference SOS and was 14-13 against those top 100 teams. Illinois (72nd, 11-11) missed out. Watch the Big 10 this year, they have a lot of teams grouped together with decent RPIs.
As far as Raider Gang goes, winning in the conference should not be a problem, but scheduling enough good RPI programs is a real concern. I would think WSU needs to have a non-con RPI in the top 30 and then win over half of them to have a chance of an at-large bid. Having only five other (crappy) teams in the HL gives the Raiders a great opportunity to schedule lots of other good teams.
As for this year's Raiders--win the HL Tournament and hope for a three seed.
The future looks good for Raider Gang.

Maybe I should go mow the yard before I fall asleep reading about the RPI with 3 outs to go in the regular season.
Oh well, at least the Raiders are taking care of business today.

Raiderrunt, Raiders ruined Oakland's Senior Day 11-3.
Don't know what the RPI would have been if WSU went undefeated but, I don't see the scheduling to change much. If some of the other teams play better than expectations it might help. As it is, the RPI said all season...win the HL tourney or try again next year.
Take care of business next week, RaiderGang.

Just looking toward the future. I am sure the coaches know what they need to do and what they can do on the scheduling front. I am glad they put a beat-down on Oakland to end the season. Let's do the same in the HL Tournament!

I think we schedule for the Horizon League, as of now. Partly to be in a good position for the automatic bid. I am sure the travel budget is better than the old days but, I'm sure we can't go too far once the league gets going for weeknight games. Win them ALL and see where we stand.
I have been happy with the overall schedule.

Tommygun.....that makes sense to keep in mind the cost of travel, but we have a ton of good RPI teams within a few hours drive.
West Virginia RPI 17 Louisville RPI 7 Notre Dame RPI 97 Virginia Tech RPI 67 Vandy RPI 1 Tennessee RPI 9 Kentucky RPI 45 Illinois St RPI 25 Indiana St RPI 33 Bradley RPI 89 Evansville RPI 93 Morehead St RPI 92
There are seven Big 10 teams within a few hours drive and most of them are in the top 100 RPI.
That makes about 20 top 100 RPI programs within a few hours drive. If we could play a few of them in a three-game series or home and home, I think our RPI would be very impressive. I think the Raiders are at the point when most schools would not be afraid to play.
I think Raider Gang is knocking at the door of big-time success. A trip to Omaha would really jump the program forward. I think this program could get on a hot streak one of these years and make the CWS.

First, you'd need an upgrade in starting pitching ( we've had some...consistency and injuries can't derail them ). Thought we might have the closer but, we've had some of them too.
WSU has been lucky to get 3 solid starters many years. Probably need a few more because the weeknight games give us a chance to play some name teams.
The teams you mention would probably have to be played down south ( unless we could build a domed stadium ) for anything more than one game. I think it would still be hard to get one of those at home.
If we take care of business next week, to get a 3 we'll need 16 teams to get #4 seeds.
