I’d be interested to see who people think would be good if we avoid in the HL tournament? The Raiders are pretty clearly the best team in this league but I would like to avoid NKU (good guard play gave us fits; their 2-3 zone is just different) and Milwaukee (we couldn’t stop them defensively). I know Detroit is hot but they don’t scare me. I would love a few games against UIC, IUPUI, Oakland, and Green Bay. I think they are just good matchups for us. What does everyone else think?

I would not want to play ysu or Detroit. Both have star players that can take over and get hot. The metrics and statistics are in our favor to win the hl tournament, but a team that can get hot like that worries me. Getting some csu vibes a few years ago when they beat nku in the tournament. A horrible team just getting hot and pulling off some upsets. I should also say I am not too concern about them. Wsu should beat anyone. Iupui and ipfw would be nice for a semi finals/finals games 🙂

NKU and Detroit. I bet we end up playing at least one of them though.

I want no part of Detroit. They've been on a monumental roll. We have also historically struggled against "pickup" style basketball. Detroit plays fast, aggressive, and haphazardly. It's like how the boys play on the blacktop in the city park. The best team doesn't always win.
Hopefully they end up leapfrogging NKU as the 4 and then CSU would likey get them in the semis and we would most likely see Oakland (as it stands now). Big IF Detroit jumps NKU.

Here's a photo of the inside of the Horizon League office just moments ago as they apply their top secret mathematical formula to decide the final league standings and seeds.

Oakland lost in 2OT at Mikwaukee meaning 3-4-5 could be jostled up after 5 seed Detroit is the only team to sweep their weekend games.
Will be interesting to see what happens there. I think we want Detroit on the 4 line and Oakland on the 3 line, but I'm not sure NKU doesn't jump Oakland. Also wouldn't be surprised at all if Detroit ends up on the 3 line with NKU 4 and Oakland falling to 5. That would put us playing Detroit likely in the semis, not what we want.

If the bracket plays out, we (2) would likely play Detroit (3), and CSU would get any other team since the bracket is reseeded each round. The 1 seed plays the lowest remaining team left in the semis.

Sounds like another tough semifinal matchup. Hopefully WSU can win it this year.

Sounds like another tough semifinal matchup. Hopefully WSU can win it this year. It's going to be very tough. If there's any major upsets, CSU will get that upsetter in the semis, and we will get the higher seeded team. Having said all of that, the one seed hasn't won this tournament since it went to this neutral site BS.

First round matchups:
RMU (12) @ DET (5):
These two just played this weekend with Detroit winning in Calihan in games that weren't really close contests. Detroit won by 11 and 19; expect Detroit to win big.
UIC (11) @ YSU (6):
These two split a very close pair of games at Beegly in late January. Could go either way, but Naz Bohannon went for 20 and 23, so expect another rock solid performance from the big man. YSU will be favored by half a dozen at home.
IPFW (10) @ GB (7):
The Phoenix put the hurt on IPFW in late January in games played in Green Bay. Look for more of the same as the Phoenix are superior on both sides of the ball, and will be playing at home. I like the Phoenix big.
IUPUI (9) @ Milwaukee (8):
The Jaguars went 1-3 against Mikwaukee this season, but have made serious strides since. Marcus Burk has made a serious push for consideration for post season accolades. I like the Jags in an upset in this one, but that will require big play from Minnett and Burk. If there's an "upset" to be had, I think it's in this game.
Don't forget, CSU will play the lowest remaining seed, WSU the next lowest, then Oakland, then NKU. This makes for some very interesting matchups.
Without any crazy upsets, this means we play Green Bay, and then the winner of a possible YSU and Oakland rematch. Odds are we miss NKU until the championship (barring a lower seeded team making a two game run).
I like where we are. Nobody coming out of the first round scares me, and avoiding NKU is always great. We also are likely to avoid Detroit for the same reasons. Any run by Detroit would likely end up on CSU's side of the bracket.

One last note, WSU's quarterfinal matchup is guaranteed to be against a team we did not lose to this year. We were 10-0 against seeds 7-12.
