Coach Nagy said the starting 5 and rotation is still up for grabs and he is using the 2 closed scrimmages to try to figure them out. What is everyone's guess for our starting 5? I'm going with the following.
C Grant Basile F Riley Voss G Tanner Holden G Tim Finke G Trey Calvin

My guess he is going to start experience: F Grant Basile F CJ Wilbourn G Tanner Holden G Tim Finke G Trey Holden If you are going with experience I would have thought you would have picked Riley Voss over Wilbourn. He is a 5th year senior coming from a similar program to ours. I think both will play. Iβm just not sure who starts.

I think it will come down to who plays better defense Voss or Wilbourn as to who gets our last starting spot.

I see Wilbourn as our inside presence so we can let Grant roam. He is a better outside shooter than Loudon was and would like to see him play 4 more than 5 spot.

I'll pick the dark horse and go with AJ Braun cracking the starting line up by HL play. He needs to bulk up but he is just too talented to keep on the bench.

I think a more pertinent question is: How many players are going to be in the rotation? With a meat grinder of a 22 game conference schedule, it really needs to be at least 8 deep, if not 9 or 10. Once you get past everyone's top 7, that being Basile, Holden, Calvin, Finke, Voss, Wilborn, & Huibregtse, there needs to be several more getting 10 or so minutes to keep the legs fresh once the February & March grind comes around. I hope Manns overcomes whatever deficiencies (defensive lapses most likely) he has had in the past to be a part of the rotation. His 3 point production is a real asset. I also think Norris may be relied on to help Calvin get a breather at the point. That leaves Welage, Braun, and Noel vying for rotation minutes. It will be interesting to see who among the newcomers steps up this year

I know Nagy has used a shorter bench for the most part while he has been at Wright State but that hasn't always been the way he has played. His last year at South Dakota State he played 9 guys more than 10 minutes a game and a 10th player averaged 8.3 minutes a game. The year before that 9 guys played roughly 10+ minutes a game (2 averaged 9.8 minutes) and another 3 played more than 6 minutes a game. Those were veteran teams for Coach Nagy and I think that is what really matters to him. He plays guys he trusts to run his system the way he wants and to play good team defense the way he wants. We could go 10-11 deep this year if everyone plays good team defense and contributes on offense. We could just as easily only go 7 deep if Coach Nagy isn't happy with how guys are playing. My guess is that we will use a lot of the OOC schedule to figure out how large he wants his rotation to be. I would like to see us go 10 deep even if 7 guys are getting the majority of the minutes. Like BBJ already mentioned, I think we are going to need several more guys to get some playing time if we are going to be healthy and have fresh legs at the end of the season.

Nagy mentioned in one of the articles this week he is hoping to go 8 deep. I saw that. I would feel so much better going 9-10 deep if coach felt the players were ready. One injury in an 8 man rotation is brutal. 2007 WSU had a 7 man rotation so it can work but I worry about the team wearing down at the end of the year (again).

Covid is going to play a part of how the season goes, too. Not as much as last year but we have quite a few un-vaccinated players. All it takes is one or two positive tests and you could be playing the end of the bench.

Just seems crazy to have players that are potentially good enough to start that will barely play this year (Nagy's words - not mine). Obvioulsy Nagy has a successsful system that and he would know better than me. But it just feels like if our program is better top to bottom than others in the conference with that kind of depth, why would we eliiminate some of that by only playing 8 guys?
Anyway - my starting 5 is same as the OP has:
C Grant Basile F Riley Voss G Tanner Holden G Tim Finke G Trey Calvin

I always figure that the reason Nagy doesn't like to go deeper than 8 is that he plays a 'team game'. When you start subbing past 8 you're probably putting in a lineup that hasn't played much together either in practice or in games. A few years ago Calipari had two lineups. He subbed five players that had practiced together and functioned as a unit. I don't remember how that worked out but I thought it was interesting.
