...WRIGHT STATE
The Raiders are making their third straight trip to the NCAA regionals, and coach Alex Sogard’s group opens Friday afternoon against host Indiana State. After taking down Oakland in the Horizon League Tournament championship game, Wright State arrives in Terre Haute, Ind. with one of the country’s best pitchers in Sebastian Gongora. The 6-foot-5 lefty Gongora earned conference Pitcher of the Year honors, and has compiled a 10-1 record in 15 starts this season. His 82 strikeouts and 86.1 innings lead the Raiders, while righty Jake Shirk (5-5 record, 82 innings, 71 strikeouts) and Luke Stofel (5-5 record, 73.1 innings, 60 strikeouts) make up the starting rotation.
Out of the pen, left-hander Jay Luikart (six saves), righty Tristan Haught (four saves) and lefty Joey Valentine (four saves) are relied on to close the deal for Gongora and crew. Shirk and Luikart joined Gongora as first-team All-Horizon selections, while Valentine was first-team all-freshman in the conference.
Offensively, Andrew Patrick is the leader. Patrick batted .333 on the season with 19 home runs, 21 doubles, 58 RBI and 1.150 OPS. The speedy center fielder also swiped 29 bases in 33 attempts from the leadoff spot in the lineup. Second baseman Gehrig Anglin (hitting .306 with nine homers) and catcher Sammy Sass (hitting .295 with 11 homers) and Luikart (hitting .304 with 11 homers) helped carry the load on offense. Luikart pulls double duty as a first baseman.
Wright State ranks 26th in the country in stolen bases. Patrick, Anglin (14 steals), Dane Thomas (13), Sass (12) and Avery Fisher (10) have reached double figures in that department on the season.
