I may be wrong, but I get the idea that Coach Nagy is not that enthusiastic about coaching. He seems to be a straight-up old style coach and hasn't changed with the times. The YSU coach has reloaded with several players from the portal. We have one, who wanted to return and one so girl friend would join Women’s team. In the past, probably, half of transfers have not played much. It is okay to disagree with me. I’d agree with that. As much as he’s on the players about wanting it more, he doesn’t seem to have much passion during the games or in his interviews. “Our team is tired” or “our guys are soft” or “I don’t know how to get them to play defense” or “this team just wanted to beat WSU since we’ve been great” is so tired and just excuse making with absolutely nothing changing. This program is just not a serious program right now and should be treated as such. If you polled HL teams and coaches, I would wager almost none respect WSU players or Coach Nagy. WSUbis being circled now aa W or at worse toss up by most teams when they look at the schedule....

If you polled HL teams and coaches, I would wager almost none respect or fear WSU players or Coach Nagy's strategy. WSU is being circled now aa W or at worse toss up by most teams when they look at the schedule.... This comment is completely off base, and I would take that wager. We have been so spoiled the last several years that every time we crap the bad, we forget how just good we've got it in this league. Only NKU has come close to our level of consistency. We also tend to forget that if we didn't have Nagy, it would be a crapshoot for our next coach, and we could wind up with Ed Schilling 2.0. No thanks. I don't agree with everything Nagy does or says, but he is still the best in the HL. If you asked the HL coaches to rank the top coaches across the league, Nagy would be #1 or #2, followed by Horne at NKU, Jon Kaufmann at PFW, and of course our old buddy Kampe at Oakland. Some will probably have Darrin Horn first, but he and Nagy will be in almost everyone's top two. Also on the list would be YSU and even Mike Davis at Detroit (even if he can't get players to go there, and as much as I hate his on court demeanor, he still can coach). The MKE, CSU, and GB coaches may get there, but are too new to have a firm opinion on. As for players, Trey and Tanner will be on everyones "respect" list. I suspect B Noel also gets tremendous respect across the league. The end of year voting by the coaches for league awards will back this up. The other coaches pre and post game comments also back up the respect they have for Nagy and WSU's program.

Not preseason voting and not what happened years ago with Loudon. Right now the team 18 games in and has a 7-9 record against D-I teams. This group could still get hot and win a HL tourney. My point is unlike years past, most teams in HL believe, and some now expect, to beat WSU.

What a bunch of fickle fans. Remember the pain of the years under Brown, Schilling and Biancardi? It was horrible. But, beginning with BB, then Donlon, and now Nagy, WSU has been in contention almost every season. In the past we were hoping to win half our games. Now we expect a trip to the NCAA Tourney. With Nagy, this team still has that goal for this year. Nagy has kept us in the hunt every year he has been here. He got us our first NCAA victory, in UD Arena of all places. He has brought many talented players to WSU, everyone mentions Love, but have you forgotten about All-ACC Honorable mention Grant Basile? I like his coaching style, I like his calm demeanor, I detest coaches that get red in the face and scream at their players at crunch time. You guys forget that we play in the Horizon League and that makes it very difficult to recruit. Most would agree he has squandered opportunity the last couple of years with a couple of poor players added via the portal, hopefully that will change. There is no disgrace in losing to Youngstown, they are currently the best team in the league. Wright State came close to winning Friday nights game, and would have won if a few more shots had dropped or a couple of questionable fouls had not been called. Keep the faith. If this team can finish in the top four they will be in an excellent position to win the Horizon League Tourney.

So the goal for the program, in 2024, continues to be to sneak into the NCAA tournament as a tournament champion of one of the worst leagues in country, and get smoked in the Round of 64 again. Cool.

If Wright State "sneaks into the NCAA Tournament...wins a HL tournament championship, and exits in the 1st round" that would represent (at worst) the 5th best season in WSU history since joining D-I 37 seasons ago. It would also give WSU 2 NCAA tournaments in 3 seasons for the 1st time in program history & allow a handful of Raiders to play in multiple NCAA tournaments for the 1st time ever.
Sure, I'd be upset if Bob Grant, Nagy, or Calvin was quoted saying that outcome was the *ultimate goal* this season, but as a fan I would not be disgruntled by that outcome.

The long term goal is to get out of this crappy conference and into a better one, but that is not within the control of this year's team. And yes, the goal for this season is to win the league tourney and (as you put it) "sneak" into the NCAA tournament (I'd call it earning a bid). I'd also like to win the league regular season, but the goal is to win the HL tourney. I agree with Will, if we accomplish that, it would put this year among the 5 best seasons in WSU Div 1 history regardless of whether we pull an upset or (again, your words...) "get smoked in the round of 64".

Feel free to move this to a new thread, but to say we are getting better might be a stretch. Here is our KenPom numbers as far back as they track:
Nagy Avg. AdjEM 141.25 Horizon League Rank 21.375
Donlon Avg. AdjEM 161.5 Horizon League Rank 12.833
Brownell Avg. AdjEM 94.25 Horizon League Rank 11.25
Biancardi Avg. AdjEM 174.67 Horizon League Rank 14.67
Schilling Avg. AdjEM 182.83 Horizon League Rank 12
It seems like saying we're getting better as a program is just playing the results. It's great we've made it to the tournament 2 times in Nagy's 8 years, but is that just because the Horizon has gotten so bad and some one has to make it from there?
We had an AdjEM average of 124 Nagy's first year + the Love years, the last three are 170, including a Nagy WSU worst 197 last year.

I think Nagytook it personally when he lost two players he invested a lot into in the portal. I also think, that changed his enthusiasm about coaching.

Then if that is the case, he needs to take a page out of YSU's playbook and use the portal well. The thing is that early on, Nagy did replace some pieces well in the portal, namely Gentry, Wampler, and Finke (yes...Tim was a solid player...not his fault he wasn't used well). But's he's swung and missed with a few, and bad luck with one (the kid from Montenegro that suffered a severe back injury). If anyone read today's DDN article today, he again lamented how tired guys were. And again....why not use and develop a bench.

If you consider the results of Brownell to be an outlier, the results of each coach improve on the previous coach. Add in that there were only 315 schools in 1999 and now there are 362, and it becomes clear that the program has been trending upwards.
I do agree that the last few years have been disappointing, but using your metric (Kenpom), we've had the best team in the league 2019-2024 (with the exception of the 2022-2023 season). Obviously part of that is being in a bad league, but being consistently the best team will get us out of here. We just need to keep winning.
