Waters Enrolls At UWM Eligible for game action after first semester next season
Jan. 31, 2005
MILWAUKEE - Walt Waters has enrolled in classes for the second semester at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He will be eligible to practice with the men's basketball team immediately and will become eligible for game action at the end of the first semester next season.
Waters, who signed a National Letter of Intent this fall to play basketball at UWM, decided to enroll at UWM immediately rather than spend another semester at Schoolcraft Community College in Detroit, where he was attending classes but not playing basketball.
Waters played at Cleveland State during the 2003-04 season. NCAA transfer regulations require that he will now have to spend one school year in residence at UWM before becoming eligible for games. Waters will then have two-and-a-half years of eligibility at UWM.
"It's good to have Walt on campus," UWM head coach Bruce Pearl said. "He gets to practice with us and become more familiar with what we do, while also getting acclimated to the campus and the academic programs at Milwaukee. We're excited to have him in our program."
Waters, a 6-foot-10, 260-pound center, is considered one of the top junior college big men in the country and was a consensus top-100 player in high school. Though he never appeared this season for Schoolcraft, Waters was rated as the 29th-best junior college player in the country by Hoop Scoop Online and the ninth-best center prospect in the country by Lindy's College Basketball Magazine. He signed with Pittsburgh in the early signing period in 2002 and then attended Cleveland State for a semester last year, appearing in 13 games for the Vikings.
Waters was a highly-touted recruit out of Detroit Southeastern High School, where he was a three-time all-state honoree. He was rated as the 52nd-best player in the nation as a high school senior by Prepstar, 55th by The Sporting News/Rivals.com, 85th by Basketball News and 97th by Lindy's.
During his senior year of high school, Waters averaged 18 points, seven rebounds and four blocks per game, shooting 63 percent from the field. He was stellar throughout his high school career, in fact, averaging 16 ppg as a freshman, 22 ppg as a sophomore and 19 ppg as a junior. Waters then averaged 4.4 ppg and 4.1 rpg in his 13 games at Cleveland State last year.

More comments on Craft from another site:SQUIRE player James Craft signs with Wright State Univ. It doesn't happen very often, but today we have the scoop on our Ohio Editor Chris Johnson with regards to something that has happened in the Buckeye State. We're talking about the verbal commitment that Wright State has received from SQUIRE player 6'11 James Craft from Mercersburg (Academy) PA. And this is exactly what the doctor ordered, because Craft, who is originally from Richmond, VA, but has been rapidly developing in prep school as a senior a year ago and now as 5th Player, is a lefty big man who rebounds, blocks shots, and is very effective facing the basket. In other words, Craft should be the heir apparent to 6'8 Sr Zach Williams, who will graduate this spring, at the center spot next year and is ideally suited to complement all the good young players that Wright State head coach Paul Biancardi already has in the program, including 6'0 Soph DaShaun Wood, 6'5 Soph Zakee Boyd, 6'7 Soph Drew Burleson, 6'6 Frosh Everett Spencer, 6'8 Frosh Jordan Pleiman, 6'2 Frosh Lorenzo Shine, 6'6 Frosh Brandon Ivery, 6'7 Frosh Parrysh Munroe from Massanutten (Military) VA. But that only tells half of the story, as Wright State's three leading scorers (Wood, Boyd, and Burleson) are sophomores and there is only one senior (Williams) and one junior (6'2 Jr Jaron Taylor) in the program. www.squirebball.com/News/NewsIndex.jsp

BASKETBALL: De La Salle guard commits to Oakland February 10, 2005 Warren De La Salle guard Keith Mackenzie has committed to Oakland University for the 2005-06 season. "I'm excited for Keith because he didn't go out with great athletic ability -- he just outworked everybody," De La Salle coach Greg Esler said. "He works harder than anyone I've had in my 23 years." Mackenzie is one of the state's best shooters. He is averaging 22.6 points and shooting 46 percent from three-point range for the Pilots, who are 15-1. Last season, Mackenzie shot 90 percent from the free-throw line. Mackenzie, 6-feet-2, also considered Detroit Mercy, Kent State and Duquesne. He joins an Oakland recruiting class that includes Erik Kangas of DeWitt, Clyde McKinney of Lansing Everett and Aaron Gardner of Anderson, Ind. Also joining the Golden Grizzlies next season will be transfers Ricardo Billings (Ohio State), Vova Severovas (Wright State) and Cal Wooten (Rutgers). www.freep.com/sports/preps/metro10e_20050210.htm

This comes as dissappointing news to me. I really want the Mackenzie kid. He would have been a perfect fit for our team. It sounds like we were never in his final choices.
Hey, can we trade Oakland for YSU? I think we took the wrong Mid Con team.

Another new name: Jerrel Allen
He is a 6-4 soph guard at Mott CC. Coach B has been recruiting him since he was a high school senior in Detroit. He stayed in contact with Allen last season when we offered a scholarship to Allen's teammate Jay Youngblood. Allen is a combo guard, who is better suited to play the 2 guard. He is averaging 17 pts, 3.5 steals and 2.9 assists this year. He is connecting on 42% of his 3 pt shots and 74% of his free throws. He averaged 15 pts as a JC freshman. He has recently been receiving interest from some BCS schools. We might have a chance at him since Coach B has been recruiting him so long, but chances are he will end up at a BCS school.

Court star has a bright future Mott C.C. player is a hot property By Greg Molzon Flint — (01/27/05)-- This week, you'll meet a basketball player whom you might not know much about, but college basketball coaches all over the country know Jerel Allen well. "Jerel Allen is one of the most talented kids that I've coached here in my 14 years at Mott. And that's quite a statement because I've had quite a few great players, five or six first team All Americans and guys that have gone on to a high level. He's got the most recruitment," said Mott Head Coach Steve Schmidt. That's right. Big-time schools from all over the country have been offering scholarships to the Mott Sophomore. Wisconsin visited just last week and schools like Texas, Pittsburgh and Florida have also been calling. All the attention has boosted the confidence of Jerel, who was mostly ignored by the big schools when he was at Detroit Cody High School two years ago. "It makes me feel like I'm capable of doing the things that I think I can do, that I'm able to do. You know, I'm happy (with) the things that are going on right now. I'm happy the coaches are offering me scholarships and things like that," Allen told abc12 Sports Director Greg Molzon. "I think he's just scratched the surface on the potential that he has, if he maintains and continues to work," Schmidt said. "His best basketball is ahead of him. The unfortunate thing for me is that I only get to coach him for two years." But Jerel isn't done at Mott just yet. He is the leader of the Bears' 16-2 team, averaging 17-points-per-game. While he understands he has a great future, he says the present is pretty good too. "I'm having fun here. My team is winning, Athlete of the Week, things like that. It's fun. I'm happy I'm here," Allen said. abclocal.go.com/wjrt/sports/012705_SP_r2_ath_week.html

Allen's 20 points lead Mott THE FLINT JOURNAL FIRST EDITION Sunday, January 30, 2005 By Dan Nilsen dnilsen@flintjournal.com • 810.766.6394 Not many basketball players have to be told to take more shots in a game. Jerel Allen is an exception. The Mott Community College sophomore is under coach's orders to put up 20 shots every game this season, but he usually doesn't get there. Allen took 14 shots Saturday and scored 20 points to lead Mott to a 98-56 victory over Macomb CC in a Michigan Community College Eastern Conference game at Ballenger Field House. The win kept the third-ranked Bears (18-2 overall) atop the conference at 8-0. Mott coach Steve Schmidt just shakes his head at his unique problem. "Jerel is the first player I've ever told to take more shots and be more aggressive," said Schmidt. "I want him to take 20 shots to make us a better team. He needs to take them, as long as they're good shots, but he's so unselfish he fights me on it." Maybe it's because Allen, like the rest of the Bears, are so focused on defense. Mott ranks fourth in the nation in team defense with less than 62 points allowed per game, and three Bears are among the top 25 individuals in steals, led by Allen in fifth place with 3.294 per game. "When you play here, you just pick up the habit of playing defense," said Allen, a 6-foot-4 spohomore guard out of Detroit Cody. "He lets us play on offense, but on defense, one mistake and you're out. If you want to stay on the court, you'd better play your butt off on defense. "I take pride in my steals. I'm in the top 10 and I'm going to try to stay there." Allen had four steals to go with six rebounds and five assists as Mott buried the Monarchs for the second time in five days. The Bears won a makeup game at Macomb 88-51 on Monday. www.mlive.com/smallcolleges/fljournal/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/110710202116220.xml

Big D, do you know if we are even recruiting Jerel and also if Jerel Allen is even a bit interested in us?
He would be a terrific fit for this team. A tall guard who can hit the 3 and relishes playing defense. Sounds like the complete package.

WSU is recruiting him. As I said in my original post, Coach B has been recruiting him since he was a HS senior. 2 different WSU assistant coaches have gone to see him play this year. I don't know how interested Allen is in us, but he was spotted talking to a WSU assistant coach after a recent game.

Thanks Big D! Jerel sounds to good to be true. It's exciting to know that our coaches are actively recruiting this quality of player. Let's hope we can land him.
The only possible down side to recruiting Jerel is that it puts another player in the junior class next year and would create more class imbalance. But, for a player of this quality you don't pass him up for class balance sake.
Thanks again for the research.

Another new 2006 recruit: Andrew Warren.
He is a 6-5 SG from Brefeuf Jesuit in Indiana. He is averaging 16.4 pts and 2.8 steals. Butler is also recruiting him.
