This can't be a good sign. I disagree. Bates was our big men coach and I don't think any of us were happy with the way our post players have played the last 2 years. I see this as a chance to bring in a new assistant with a better track record of developing post players.

I hope we promote Director of Operations Brendan Mullins. With his connections to AAU ball in Illinois, I think we would be a great recruiter for WSU.

I hope we promote Director of Operations Brendan Mullins. With his connections to AAU ball in Illinois, I think we would be a great recruiter for WSU. That might end up happening just because it is September. It's going to be very hard to find a top assistant coach that wants to change jobs now. Most of these job changes happen in the spring and early summer.

Man, I miss our last beat writer. He would have had the scoop on this story. He would have also found out what the hold up is with WSU adding Steven Davis to our roster.

It's kind of hard to get too upset with our new beat writer. Donlon won't tell him anything and WSU has done less than a half ass job with press releases and updating it's website. All but 1 game from our schedule was known on this board before WSU finally got around to releasing it. Bates obviously isn't at WSU anymore, yet he is still listed on WSU's website and still no official release on Steven Davis. Our new beat writer put out some decent articles on WSU this spring and summer. I think the real problem has been our own staff hasn't worked with him the way they should.

I hope we promote Director of Operations Brendan Mullins. With his connections to AAU ball in Illinois, I think we would be a great recruiter for WSU. I don't have a problem with Brendan becoming our next assistant coach. I think his connections in Illinois would make him a solid recruiter. I just don't know what he would bring to the table in regards to player development. I have 2 other names I think Donlon should consider: Bill Donlon and Mike Mullins. Bill Donlon is Coach Donlon's father. He was a high school coach in Chicago, assistant college coach for Providence and Northwestern. The biggest thing our coaching staff lacked the last 2 years in my book was experienced assistant coaches who weren't just yes men. All good college coaches need good assistant coaches that are going to given them honest feedback and opinions. I don't think Donlon trusted or respected his staff enough last year to heed their advice. I don't think that would be a problem with Bill Donlon. He might be a good 1 year addition that will solidify this staff this year and allow Donlon to go after a top assistant next spring when coaching changes usually occur. The other coach I think would look at is Mike Mullins, Brendan Mullins father. He runs the Illinois Wolves AAU program that sent Bobo Drummond and Jacoby Roddy to WSU. He knows all of the top coaches in AAU ball and high school coaches in Illinois so he would be a great recruiter. He has also put together the top AAU program in the country and those teams are built on strong defenses. I think his coaching philosophy would mesh great with Donlon and his ability to develop players is just what we need.

This can't be a good sign. Reminds me of when assistant coaches started jumping ship before Biancardi's last season at WSU. Not the best omen for Donlon future here.

I saw a post by Roadtrip on raiderroundball about Bill Edwards that said Bill was an assistant strength and conditioning coach at WSU. Donlon should talk to him about joining his coaching staff. It woould be a complete homerun in regards to bringing in a coach with a wealth of experience as a player, credibility with players and recruits, and it would be huge to our fanbase.

I think Roadtrip was hinting that it might help with a certain potential recruit. If Bill is associated with WSU then that should already be an advantage this time around. Can't speak for Billy but, I'd bet he likes the flexibility of being able to watch his kids play without the burden of being expected to travel with one particular team ( not involving one of his kids ). Always happy to see Bill Edwards so, not against it but, I'm sure Coach Donlon doesn't need my help in finding someone to replace Bates.

And Roadtrip needs to stop drinking if that is what he was thinking. Vince Edwards is not coming to WSU, even if daddy became one of our coaches. He just started his junior year in high school and he is rated the #66 player in the country on Rivals and has a 1/2 dozen BCS offers. He is going to end up at one of the top schools in the country when all is said and done. If you hire Bill Edwards, you do it because he was a great basketball player and would be a great teacher of the game to our players. He would also be a kick ass recruiter in the Cincinnati area where he is very well regarded.

Raider Fanatic, it might be an incredible bit of luck to get a player of Vince Edwards caliber to come to WSU but, it would explain how such a thing could happen. I didn't think Ray Jr would go to Detroit just because of his dad. Anyway, Roadtrip or fans like him should think that way. My problem is wondering if both parents need to push such a thing. The Edwards kids have certainly gotten great treatment over the years when they have attended games.
