you should write headlines for DDN - nice summary Interesting that we were going to go back to Italy next year. I assume we will be making the same or a simialr trip in the next coule of years then. Answers some of the critics that for some (ridiculous) reason thought Donlon didn't care or wasn't doing anything about the transgressions of players on the team.

Yeah, because we both know that my paragraph is more WSU coverage than the team gets all season. =]
I agree with your second point...and hopefully that helps to eliminate further issues of misbehavior on the team. We don't want to look like the team across town for Pete's sake.

Really a bummer for those seniors too (i.e. this year's juniors), although one of them (JT) was one of the one's that got in trouble. Hopefully a lesson learned.

I wonder if the timing of this announcement had a negative effect on the team. It probably affected the players involved more. Sometimes the timing of this type of thing is more important than the announcement. I personally do not believe in group punishment. But, if you do something like this don't inform the team and announce just before a big game, the psychology effect, of when this is announced can have a negative effect on the team. In my opinion, this should have been done right after the YSU game. Would give time to lessen the effects.

Probably just a cost cutting move and they blamed it on the players. Team chemistry is important, the trip was important for player development, it was stupid to cancel the trip.

Thanks BigD, why didn't they make it public before now?

they should have taken the trip and left the three wrong doers at home. if we believe that this trip would help the team we are penalizing those players who did no wrong and negatively affecting our team for next year.

I love how everyone plays both sides of the argument to just continue to spew negativity. We have kids get in trouble in the off-season and everyone rants and raves that Donlon isn't doing anything about it and is ruining the image of the program. We are just letting anything go and becoming a laughingstock.
Then we find out he made a bold statement to enforce to EVERYONE - not just the players that got in trouble - that those types of actions will not be tolerated if you represent Wright State University. And of course, people lose their mind. Now all of a sudden if going on the trip could have led to one more win next year then we should have gone and who cares about teaching the team anything about discipline. "What was Donlon thinking?!?"
Give me a break.

Team chemistry is important, the trip was important for player development, it was stupid to cancel the trip. ======== The season following our last trip to Italy, our team compiled a 13-19 record. It was our only losing season during the current nine-year Brownell/Donlon era. If that trip was a chemistry and player development builder, I hate to imagine what our record would have been without the trip.

Personally I am very happy that Donlon cancelled the Italy trip. I only wished he made a public announcement of it and each player's suspension before the season started. We were getting ripped apart across the HL and by fans of the team across town as being a program out of control. I think each player's suspension was warranted and I think cancelling the Italy trip sends a good message that this type of behavior is not condoned at Wright State. I also think this will help the team in the future. I work with high school age kids. I don't think there is any bigger deterrent to bad behavior than peer pressure. Guys have been getting into trouble for the last few years now skipping class, getting DUIs, and other arrests. Donlon's previous disciplinary attempts: extra conditioning, being taken out of the starting lineup, and suspensions has not stopped this behavior. Taking away a trip overseas is going to piss off everyone on the team that is taking care of their own business. My guess is that those good apples on the team are going to start policing the behavior of the bad apples on the team.
