If it was going to happen this was the time to do it. Billy has the opportunity to look for a position at the tournament where the AD's will gather and we have the chance to shop around for the available replacements. The only negative that I'll say about Billy and his tenure is that I don't think he played well with his assistant coaches and staff. He didn't delegate responsibility and it hurt the program. It always surprised me as he was such an active assistant coach with Brad.

I'm disappointed. I'll be very unhappy if the new coach is provided with a bunch of new resources like a full time strength coach and a lavish budget for assistants. I didn't like it when Shilling came in and got resources Underhill and Brown were denied. I won't like it when a shiny new coach gets it now. I'm also looking forward to seeing what kind of coach we can attract when a coach who gets us a second place finish in a mediocre league gets fired. You guys don't have a full time strength coach? o.O This would be something to get done yesterday.

I assume that means Donlon hasn't been told yet. Rumor has it Grant and Donlon have not been speaking.

Guy just lost his job, please be respectful with posts... Best of luck to Donlon, if this news is true (saw a post that wsu said he is still the hc?). I hope he does well and is happy/healthy in his next venture.

Not surprised based on how uninterested Bob Grant looked on senior night. That said Grant better hit a homerun with this hire or his @ss is next. Somebody needs to worry less about dressing like a hipster and more about making a huge splash with this hire! Some no-name assistant coach or re-tread head coach is not going to get it done!

Seriously, dogbert? Most assistants, unless they were big name players in their day, are no-name.
I would presume Grant has a list of potential candidates he wants to target. I doubt this firing is spontaneous and caught Grant off-guard.

We aren't talking about replacing a coach that went 4 - 28, we're talking about firing a coach that won 22 games and went to the conference finals 3 of the last 4 years. Bob Grant is getting killed on Twitter by some big name talking heads.

Take whatever Dakich says with a grain of salt. He made a fool of himself when he was under consideration for the WSU job. We dodged a bullet by not hiring him and he's been pissy at Wright State ever since.

Seriously? I don't give a shit what twitter thinks. I don't think most other people care what twitter thinks either. It's mainly two guys--who were fired from mid-majors--going back and forth. One guy was fired after it was found out earlier in his career he handed a bag of cash to a recruit, had a "show cause" attached to his name, nobody would hire him, and now is an ESPN "expert." The other guy coached for years, couldn't get his team into the NCAA tournament, was fired, landed a perfect position as an intern coach with the possibility becoming full-time, but couldn't persuade the A.D. to hire him, at a Power-5 program and is now an "expert analyst."
Give me a break. Twitter is what sour grapes taste like.

Not surprised at all.
I suspect he would have been safe had we won the league championship, at least for another year.
The low down is we've fallen off since Brownell's departure. Attendance, hype, season tickets...All on the downturn.
Getting to conference championship games isn't enough, and it shouldn't be enough. We've shown we've got the balls to best anyone in this league, we beat every team in the league this season, but that's not enough.
We have to have a coach bring us into the direction the league is going. We need a coach that will focus more on offense, more on big men, and bring us to the next level.
We've got the facilities and reputation in place to draw some successful coaches to WSU. There's no excuse for hiring a candidate without collegiate success. End of story. No assistants, no mediocre d2 coaches, and nobody currently on our staff will cut it.
Best wishes to BD and his family. I hope he finds a home that better fits his coaching mentality and philosophy.

You guys don't have a full time strength coach? o.O This would be something to get done yesterday. Had some talk on the board about this, and according to one of the posters on the board, one of our two full-time AD guys is dedicated solely to both basketball teams, though the AD site doesn't say as much. Best of luck to Billy Donlon and thank you for all your contributions in 10 years as assistant and HC in helping take a mess of a D-I program and bringing back an expectation of perennial respectability on and off the court---during his time the thing that hurt him was not how his teams finished, but how they started. Many are happy on the board he got fired; I think he deserved one more year but at the end of the day he (according to some on here) was given an ultimatum to make it to the NCAA this year or be done. He didn't and he's gone. If true, it wasn't like he was forewarned.

I hope all the bashers are happy. A good man and good coach is fired and everyone seems elated. With this being done we should be guaranteed to be dancing and average 7000 people per game, because if we don't this was a useless move. Could happen to us what happened to Wilmington when Brad and Billy came here. Eerily similar circumstaces.
