Yes, but they went into a horrible stretch where they were winning 8 games a year, until they finally got a coach to bring them back. They have been totally irrelevant in their league like Youngstown until this year. I hope it doesn't take us 11 seasons and 4 coaches to get back to the point we have been 1 game away from for 3 of the past 4 years. Yes, it took 4 coaches for UNC Wilmington to get back. Think about that. Not one, not two but three different Ed Shillings before we find the coach that gets us into the promised land. We'll have a 15 point shot clock and a 4 point shot by then.

Where is the money coming from to buy out his remaining two years contract? This is such a huge disappointment! The next coach will be a disaster and I will bitch more than most of you haters did about Billy. Most of you guys are delusional with expectations. What is a budget $1.9M going to buy? They already charge students $600 for student free tickets. It's not about competing and doing your best it's only about wining.
I always donated to the Raider Club and paid the $250 for the right to buy rows 1 - 6 seats while most of you don't pay up. I am done, just like Keith from Xenia said he was done.

Where is the money coming from to buy out his remaining two years contract? Private donors have been offering to pay his buyout since last season. I think it is a safe bet Grant lined up the money before he made this decision.

Look, everyone needs to calm down a little. I am firmly pro Donlon. He had his weaknesses, especially in recruiting, but he's the second best D1 coach in our history. I think people are underestimating the difficulty of winning at the D1 level. It's really easy to say, we should play run and gun ball, but how many teams actually win that way? Oakland plays that style, has NBA level talent and what has that gotten them?
At the same time, the pro Donlon crowd needs to wait and see who Grant gets before going too crazy. I'm going to assume Grant has some sort of plan in place to replace Donlon and I'm fascinated to see what that might be. All I can say, is it better be good, because we just let a darn good coach walk out the door because of style preferences.
Never forget....
Since joining a D1 conference Ralph Underhill 74-71 (51%) Jim Brown 7-20 (26%) Ed Schilling 75-93 (44%) Paul Biancardi 42-44 (49%) Brad Brownell 84-45 (65%) Billy Donlon 109-94 (54%)

If Grant did let Donlon go today, you have to think he already has someone in mind to replace him. Was thinking the same thing.

Agree. Everyone on here thinks we should be able to breeze right through the Horizon every year and win the tournament 8 times every decade. You know that "other school" in our town, that I'm sure people would say is a successful program, hasn't won their conference tournament since 2003 and have only been to the championship game 4 times in 16 years. We've been that many times in 10 less years. I don't care what your style of play is, how many big guys you have (people on here think they grow on trees), it's not as easy as changing coaches. Ask any team in a 1 bid league in this country if they'd like to win 20 plus games and be in their conference championship games 4 of the next 6 years and roll the dice with a 50/50 shot of going to the tournament and I think you'd be hard pressed to find any say no. First, I challenge you to find a single post on this board since it started over 10 years ago where a Raider fan said they expected us to breeze through the HL every year and go to the NCAAs 8 out of 10 years. You aren't going to find that quote and acting like the people that wanted Donlon removed have those expectations is just BS. Second, comparing us getting into the HL championship game as a level of success better than the team across town getting to their conference championship game is just an poor comparison. As you pointed out, we are in a shitty 1 bid conference. Getting to our championship game isn't a huge achievement especially now that Butler is gone. The A-10 is a consistent top 10 conference that sends multiple teams to the Dance every year. Donlon has been at WSU for 10 years as an assistant or our head coach. We have gone to the NCAAs 1 time in those 10 years. The team across town has gone to the tournament 4 times counting this year and advanced 2 times. If Donlon had 1/2 of that success we would be talking about a contract extension for him right now instead of replacing him.

Not that I'm advocating him, but I know someone may eventually ask... is Bradbury a legit candidate for the job? This would be far from a splash hire, but he's a winner...and similar to what Big D alluded to above regarding UD vs. WSU (yes, now I'm agreeing with one of his points) if Donlon had Bradbury's type of success he'd have gotten an extension.
The only reason I ask about Bradbury is to just get this one out of the way on the board. If someone wants to start a new thread on "New Coach Candidates" feel free to move this.

I doubt Grant would take the risk of removing Donlon for Bradbury. You don't see many coaches go from coaching women to coaching men. It's a different game and you want a coach with recruiting contacts. All of his contacts are with high school and AAU coaches for women's teams.
I don't think Grant is a good AD by any stretch of the imagination but I think he is smart enough to have donors lined up to pay Donlon's buyout and also have his replacement in mind with some assurance that said replacement has interest. Grant's future at Wright State is on the line too. If he screws this up he is going to be looking for a new job too. Let's all hope he has this planned out.

Great story by Tom Archdeacon about Donlon's firing on the other site.
Big donors are the real owners of college men's basketball, ADs are just their puppets!

As bad as the league is it won't take but the out of conference season to get going like normal the first year.

Great story by Tom Archdeacon about Donlon's firing on the other site. Big donors are the real owners of college men's basketball, ADs are just their puppets! Actually it was a very biased article like usual from Arch where he only wrote from one side of the story and didn't do any fact checking. For example he wrote that WSU has one of the lowest assistant coaches salaries in the HL. That is a very misleading quote. Historically that isn't true. We have been in the top 3-4 in salaries for most of the last decade. This past year we had one of the lowest and the reason being is we hired 2 guys with no experience. We didn't pay them much because you don't pay guys with no experience the same as you pay a guy with 10 years experience like Coach Moore was getting before he left last year. He was also critical of our scheduling like Grant was out to hurt Billy because we wouldn't pay for buy games vs D1 teams at home even though we played buy games on the road. No one in the HL pays for home buy games vs D1 schools. Billy was able to pad his stats by playing multiple buy games vs D2/D3/NAIA teams. No one made him schedule those buy games on the road. Even if we encouraged him to play the 1-2 buy games on the road we took every year he still put together the schedule himself. He consistently put together weak schedules and still had had poor success against those schedules. That's on Billy and his staff.

It would have been horrible if Donlon was still here too. We are going to need to find a coach that is a big time recruiter because Billy left the cupboard bare and we have some serious rebuilding to do.

Sounds a bit amateurish. Not exactly what I want from my alma mater. Seems poor all around.
