Ron Hunter to Georgia Tech makes a lot of sense. The two schools are only 2 miles apart, and he has done a great job of elevating GSU, so its obvious he can recruit kids to Atlanta. And if he takes that job, he doesn't have to move. He seems like a long shot for us.

I highly doubt we're in competition with Georgia Tech for Ron Hunter's services. I suspect they have their eyes on a more acclaimed coach and with more on-court success when not playing with the coach's NBA destined son. Though the campuses may only be two miles apart the culture and admission standards make those institutions a world apart. Georgia State is an Open Admission University. Georgia Tech has high academic standards that must be met to even be considered for admission--and they do not waiver their athletic department from those standards with their student athletes. When it comes to academic standards and sponsored sports you need to group Ga. Tech in with Stanford, Notre Dame, Northwestern, Rice, etc.
Not that Hunter can't do the job, but I would bet next week's paycheck that GT would go with a person who has more experience with their exacting standards or one with more post-season success than 2 NCAA appearances in 18 years as head coach.

While I certainly agree agree that the list in DDN was a joke (high school coaches, seriously?) and loaded with UD-related names...is anyone else intrigued by Anthony Grant? He was successful at VCU and has NBA experience as an assistant, which may get him in the homes of bigger name recruits.

I just saw the DDN list. Did that writer even try to report on this? Or did he call up a Flyers fan friend of his and say 'Who you think WSU should go for?'
Personally, I think WSU should do everything to get Brian Gregory. I think he'd be a great coach, he'd energize casual fans in the area who will recognize the name, and he's reachable. We've been casually joking that Milwaukee should go after him, but no one thinks we'd seriously be in contention. Wright State, however, might be.

Brian Gregory sucks. UD's program took off soon after he left. He was a disaster at G-Tech.

I believe Sean Woods at Morehead St can be added to the list.

sorry, twiz, but i do not agree with you at all. bg built upon purnells work quite nicely. I know they won the nit and i think they were in a couple of ncaa tourneys. I do not remember if they won any games in the ncaa. i believe they beat a number of bcs teams. i think he built a foundation for miller to build on. shoot, if bd had built the same resume we would be celebrating.
also, he plays a very, very exciting brand of bb, uptempo with full court defense. he did tend to recruit superb athletes who had to develop as bball players. but i would take him in a heartbeat.

I believe Sean Woods at Morehead St can be added to the list. Worked out well for us once with Bradbury...

A new name that is being put out there is Scott Nagy from South Dakota St. He is not a name that we know, but I was impressed with his team in the tournament game against Maryland. I don't think that it would be easy to recruit to SDSU, but he seemed to have an athletic team, nearly overcoming an 18 point deficit to ultimately lose by 5 in that game.

Gregory was a good recruiter, but his players didn't seem to improve much once they were in the program.

Oh my God....Pat Kelsey? Hiring the Winthrop coach would be a debacle if he were truly a candidate, and would only be done if somebody double-dog dared Grant to completely kill fan interest going into next year(#uhyeah). I would so much rather have "little Napoleon" (as he was put) than Kelsey. Four years at Winthrop, no NIT or NCAA appearances and the have lost three Big South tournament finals in a row...at least Donlon gave us a one-year break from a stomach turning HL finals loss. His inclusion in this list of otherwise mostly guys with ties to Dayton or UD has me thinking that there may be something behind this.

Think it would be fine if we got Gregory or Grant. Both are proven winners. Their ties to UD might bring more interest to the Raiders by the Dayton Area community. WSU has UD ties, Ehler and Butler were assistant coaches at both UD and WSU, and didn't coach Jim Brown go to UD? Gregory did not take the Yellow Jackets to the NCAA tournament during his tenure. He was 76-86 overall and 27-61 in ACC play. espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/15067516/brian-gregory-not-return-georgia-tech-head-coach Read more: wrightstate.proboards.com/posts/recent#ixzz44J7Mkc00I think the others are referring more so to his time at Dayton than at GT. At Dayton he was 172-94, including 2 NCAA tournament appearances and 3 NIT trips, one of which resulted in a championship.

This is like trading-in the car...for the same car, for the sake of trading-in...the car. I mean, it's a slightly different color but more or less the same model and year. Unlike our old car, we don't know who's worked on this car or it's service history beyond what the carfax says (and what's reported). This seems like a lateral move for both of us and not an upgrade. If you're going to strive for more, then aim for more. If you're going to cast aside the known for the unknown, at least shop somewhere new.

Hopefully JMU gave him a really good offer. That would be a garbage signing IMO. ESPECIALLY after Bob Grant was talking about hiring some savior to lead us into the promised land. So far, the majority of these names are the epitome of a letdown.
