This is some really interesting news if true. I wonder if this is going to cause us some problems since we apparently already have trouble getting buy games.
I don't know how the conference can force any of us to do it.

Winning Thursday could be the rubber of a five-game winning streak with very winnable games against Robert Morris and IUPUI following. 9-6 looks a hell of a lot better than 6-6.
You guys can sure score a lot. 79.1 ppg in conference is nothing to shake a stick at, especially when Calvin is the only big time surefire bucket getter. That Welage kid killed us on Thursday, he should play more.
I looked up the stat: if Welage plays over 20 minutes in a game, Wright State wins. He's scored in double figures in five of the six games he's played 22 or more minutes, all wins. In games where he attempts six or more shots from the field, Wright State is 6-2 (losses to PFW and Oakland).
As for Alex Huibregtse (yowza that's a name), Wright State is 7-1 when he plays 25 or more minutes and 11-3 when he plays 21 or more. When he attempts seven or more shots in a game, Wright State is 7-1. The PFW game is the only time he has scored in double figures and the Raiders have lost.
Reading through the game thread against us last week, I could tell you guys sniffed something, so I searched for some context and it was blatantly easy to see.
It's obvious to me that these guys are something of a lynchpin.
Conversely, I took a look at someone everyone outside of WSU was high on coming into the season - Brandon Noel.
In 10 games the Raiders have played where he has played 30 or more minutes, Wright State is 5-5. So maybe the answer is not relying on him so much. I realize we're talking about guards vs a forward, but he might be playing too much.
Amari Davis, on the other hand, is definitely someone who should be sitting more. The Raiders are 4-9 when he plays 22 or more minutes, and 0-5 if he plays 30 or more. The Raiders lost his top six games for minutes played, and all four games he attempted 15 or more shots. When he went 7-for-15 from the field and to score 17 points and 13 rebounds against Davidson (his only double-digit rebound game), they lost. Lastly, the Raiders are 2-5 when AJ Braun plays 23 minutes or more.
What this all tells me is WSU is just too thin in the post otherwise Nagy wouldn't have to play frontcourt guys so much. But then again, this is kinda true about the entire conference.
You guys know more than me, so you'll be able to tell me if this is all hogwash or not.

Maybe we needed to get punched in the mouth. The Raiders are a perfect foil for us. Even if we somehow come back I don't wanna see you guys in the HLT.

I don't know how that happened. You guys wanted it more and adjusted to the officiating better. We played like we would win by just showing up. We are no where near that good and took the L for it. I dream of the blissful day when a team doesn't have to "adjust to the officiating" to win a Horizon League basketball game.

I'm on board with Grand Canyon and NMSU. Big D won me over on that. We should have done that last year, perhaps we could have finished high enough to stave off losing Valpo.
If there's still a chance for it, they should be as aggressive as possible. The interest level from the best teams near the footprint, Murray State and Belmont, is very low. But if they can swing GCU/NMSU/RMU, we could look at better teams for 13/14 if we go that route.
I like the scheduling idea proposed by a UNI fan to me during the MVC expansion talk. It was simple; instead of divisions, sort the teams by projected order of finish. The top half and bottom half. This way, the top teams most likely to find themselves in line for an at-large berth can avoid playing multiple games against all the RPI anchors. Sure, a team that isn't picked to do that great can be hurt by ending up in the bottom half, but how often can one of those teams get good enough for an at-large?

If Valpo leaves, replace them with Omaha, North Dakota State and South Dakota State.
Omaha is the Summit's NKU - new to D-I, fantastic facilities. They have the benefit of having almost no competition for the sports entertainment dollar in their town. Their competition is literally Creighton and their own hockey team. Not bad for a city more than double the size of Dayton.
NDSU and SDSU have great facilites - NDSU's is brand new and SDSU's Frost Arena was renovated about a decade ago - and they win. They own their towns and their states for the most part. These are good programs that will raise the level of the Horizon League, just like Oakland did. I would guess that the NDSU and SDSU additions would be akin to Oakland, while Omaha's addition would be similar to NKU.
Don't forget what someone else said earlier about Omaha - these are public schools. In the case of Omaha, it's a public urban research university, which will be a big deal to us and UIC since the only public research schools at the R1 level in the Horizon League footprint are in the Big Ten. Granted it's at the R3 level but any research schools are a bonus (for instance, WSU is R3). NDSU and SDSU are at the R2 level like CSU. This may not be on the basketball fan's radar, but at UWM our academics are huge on being R1 and they'll be interested in two R2's and an R3 because it will open up avenues for research collaboration and help all of us improve there.
I understand that it's not sexy for you guys. Those schools are far away. Of course, with 12 teams we could figure out a divisional format, or just play a 22-game conference schedule and minimize the problem of finding out-of-conference games.
It may be difficult to get NDSU/SDSU to leave the conference that has become 'their' conference, but this is the only way we raise the profile of all the schools. Tried and true: Raid the Mid-Con.
BTW - I expect the names for the MVC to discuss this weekend to be Valpo, Omaha and UMKC. No reporting, just the names I'm hearing from coaches and admins.

By the way, I don't know if any of you have put it together yet, but it's March 6th.
Tenth anniversary of the 2007 Championship. What an awesome game that was. I hope the rest of this tournament lives up to that lofty standard.

So who is everyone rooting for now that we're out and nothing in the world makes any sense whatsoever? I'm pulling for Youngstown and Milwaukee tonight. NKU is the only higher seed to win a game so far, but what kind of story is that? We've got a Cinderella in UIC and two Mega Cinderellas in YSU and UWM. Go 'Guins and Panthers! Thanks for the support! If there's anything great to get out of YSU and MKE in the title game, it's that the nation will turn their eyes to Detroit in what would be a fun story.

Hey guys, just wanted to come on here and say this: the future is bright for Wright State. You've got a real gem on the bench in Sharif Chambliss, he's going to be a great head coach one day. Oh yeah, and Scott Nagy will build that program up big time. As a Horizon League fan, I want the whole conference to elevate, and I feel great about the future in Fairborn.

I just saw the DDN list. Did that writer even try to report on this? Or did he call up a Flyers fan friend of his and say 'Who you think WSU should go for?'
Personally, I think WSU should do everything to get Brian Gregory. I think he'd be a great coach, he'd energize casual fans in the area who will recognize the name, and he's reachable. We've been casually joking that Milwaukee should go after him, but no one thinks we'd seriously be in contention. Wright State, however, might be.

UNLV hires Chris Beard (Little Rock) after getting snubbed by UC's Mick Cronin. Those were really weird circumstances. Usually the AD doesn't put things out there like that. It almost sounds to me like Cronin had said "that sounds like we're good to go, let me get back to you" and the AD just ran with it.
