I still think this team is going to be pretty good by conference play. The defense is struggling because no one has played together on this team and we have no depth. You can't play this style of offense without depth. Adding Hall tonight was good. Mitchell will be back next game. When we add Cole we will be able to go 8-9 deep and hopefully the guys will develop more chemistry by then too.

I wish I was young. I'm over 40. And the HL is a one-bid conference. No need to pretend otherwise IMO. And it will continue to be a one bid conference if everyone had your type of attitude. Luckily, most of the HL doesn't and made changes in the coaching staffs the last 2 seasons to get us back to being a multi-bid league. I'm with Big D. I think this is a good change.

I doubt we have a steady starting line up all year. We almost always have guys injured and Donlon seems to like to change his starters from time to time anyways based on who had the hot hand in the last game. I personally think that is a good thing. It drives competition for PT and keeps guys from getting complacent.

If schools located in Wichita Kansas and Cedar Falls, Iowa can attract quality players, Wright State should be able to also. Those schools have no competition for fans or recruits and they are in a higher tier conference than the HL. If you live in Wichita Kansas, there is absolutely nothing to do. It is easy for them to attract fans. Having a full rocking arena every night attracts recruits. It also greatly increases your revenue. Trying to recruit a kid to a schools in a top 10 conference where basketball is king and you play in a packed arena all of the time is pretty easy. Wright State has to compete against multiple schools within an hour drive for fans (UD, OSU, UC, X, Miami). We also have to compete against the dozen other schools within a 3 hour drive for recruits. WSU is in a lower tier conference than most of the schools we are recruiting against in Ohio and we have very little name recognition against those other schools.

Bob Grant lost me as a leader when he argued with me on the Schlemmer show that we just have to play a couple of div iii teams each year to save money. If that is all it took then I guess you wouldn't be happy following 3/4 of the college basketball programs in the US because almost all mid-majors and low majors play D2 and D3 schools. Unfortunately it is part of college basketball nowadays.

We currently play 2 non-D1 games a year at home for 2 reasons according to Donlon and Grant: 1. We need to play a certain number of home games every year to make enough revenue to support the program. 2. It is more cost effective to schedule a D2 team than to buy a low major D1 team. I highly disagree with our coaching staff and AD about scheduling. I think our biggest problem is our coaching staff doesn't put enough effort into scheduling and I honestly believe they want a weak schedule. Scheduling is done by coaching staffs and/or ADs across the country. Some schools have staffs dedicated to scheduling or at a minimum one person responsible for scheduling the majority of the year. WSU has Director of Player Development DJ Wyrick as our one man dedicated to scheduling. Considering how important scheduling is to our revenue stream and outlook for the season, shouldn't we have someone solely dedicated to scheduling instead of our lowest level basketball staffer that is also responsible for coordinating team travel, organizes film exchange and video editing, assists with scouting and serves as the director of the Billy Donlon Basketball Camp. That doesn't leave much time for contacting other schools for scheduling. The other argument I made above is that our coaches want a weak schedule. Donlon likes to say to the media that he has a hard time getting team to come to the Nutter Center because they are afraid to play here. Pleeeeease. I really don't think 2 NCAA tournament appearances in the last 20+ years is scaring anyone away. Our scheduling has been middle of the pack in the HL or lower every year Donlon has been here. Our fans and his players deserve more. We shouldn't be preparing to play Urbana tomorrow. We should be getting ready for a D1 game. Playing a tournament at WSU in the future sounds like a great idea. I don't see that ever happening with our current coaching staff and AD. Organizing a tournament would require waaaaay too much effort when they can just continue to schedule a couple of D2 teams a year and get away with it.
