Baseball Falls in Finale at Washington State, 7-4 Mercer, Vagedes Collect Multi-Hit Games in Finale Against Cougars March 2, 2008 PULLMAN, Wash. - The big inning doomed the Wright State baseball team for the third straight game at Washington State as they fell 7-4 in the series finale. WSU starter Michael Meintel would surrender the seven runs, while the WSU bullpen held the Cougars scoreless over the final three innings. The Cougars took an early 2-0 lead as Jim Murphy collected an RBI in the second and third inning. Murphy homered in the second inning and then singled with a runner on third base in the third inning. Washington State opened up their margin in the fifth inning as they tallied five runs on four hits in the inning to take a 7-1 lead. Meintel made his second start of the season and allowed seven runs on seven hits in five innings of work. The freshman walked three and falls to 0-1 on the season as he was saddled with the loss. The Raiders chipped away at that lead in the sixth inning as Casey McGrew and Jeff Mercer led off the inning with singles. With two runners on-base and no outs, Ross Vagedes smacked his second home run in as many games over the right-center field fence. That hit ended the day for the Cougars starter. WSU would threaten in the sevenths as had runners on second and third with one out in the inning. Wazzu reliever Andrew Davis would be called upon in the situation and would retire the two Raider hitters via strikeout. Rylan Ostrosky came out of the bullpen to throw two innings of shutout baseball with one strikeout. Ostrosky allowed only two hits and struck out one batter in the outing. Jon Durket and Ryan Portwood combined to throw a scoreless eighth inning. Durket struck out one and Portwood walked one and fanned two. On the day for WSU, Mercer collected a pair of hits to extend his hitting streak to six games. Vagedes collected a pair of hits, including a home run, and drove in three RBI's. Washington native Kory Twede drove in the only other RBI for the Raiders with a double in the fifth inning. The Green and Gold fall to 0-6 overall in 2008 and will travel to Charleston, South Carolina next weekend to compete in The Citadel Shootout. The Raiders will open play against UNC-Asheville on Friday, March 7 at Noon. wsuraiders.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/recaps/030208aaa.html

All HL games are critical at this point. We dug ourself into a hole. Now we need to dig our way back out.

I thought Chris Collins always called him Jordan Anthony Pleiman too.

Cleveland State goes deep to top Wright StateBy Marc Katz Staff Writer Sunday, January 13, 2008 FAIRBORN — Wright State rushed to a big early lead, then couldn't contend with waves and waves of Cleveland State Vikings, who came at them like the Vikings of yore, spilling over their longships to attack enemies and win battles. These Vikings didn't change any plans even knowing Wright State was a little short on the bench due to injuries. These Vikings are deep and showed it, even making sure their best shooter — Joe Davis — wasn't going to take the shot that would win the game. "The play you saw is exactly the play we called," said CSU coach Gary Waters of the shot that disappointed most of the 6,477 fans at the Nutter Center. "The object was for Joe to come off — and they knew Joe was our shooter — and for Kevin (Francis) to step back. I told Joe in the huddle, 'You are not shooting this shot. When you receive the pass, you look at the basket and you kick to Kevin and Kevin steps back and gets the 3,' and he hit it." Francis' basket with 11.9 seconds to play gave Cleveland State a 65-63 lead, which stood as the final score as the Raiders failed to get a decent shot at the basket in the last seconds, leaving WSU at 9-6 and 2-4 in Horizon League play, where CSU is on top at 5-0 and 12-5 overall. "They were great on-the-ball defenders," said WSU sophomore guard Vaughn Duggins, who led the Raiders with 18 points. "We jumped out on them, and great teams respond. They responded." Wright State led 11-1 in the first 4½ minutes, then 16-3. By halftime, WSU's lead was just 36-31. "The second part of the first half is where we won the game," Waters said. Wright State had the lead at five points three more times in the second half, the last with 7:31 to go. And after holding CSU to 4-of-16 shooting from the 3-point line, it was a 3 that beat them. www.daytondailynews.com/s/content/oh/story/sports/college/wsu/2008/01/12/ddn011308wsubb.html

Per YSU's game notes, Liles comes off the bench for YSU.

Some of my concerns are fatigue by VD, TD, & WG. These guys have been logging MAJOR minutes all season long. I'm worried about fatigue too. My biggest key is we need to slow down the game and turn it into a possession by possession dogfight. We excel at this. They make too many mistakes.

Another poor night vs. Presbyterian. Pleiman is up to 894 points and 628 rebounds. He really needs to pick up his scoring if he is going to break 1000.

I hate Butler's board. The arrogance is overwhelming.

I actually like that they came back at the end. It gives Coach Brownell something to use in the film room the next few days before we go to Milwaukee. I don't want us rolling into Milwaukee with big heads. We haven't won there in a long time and I want our guys hungry.

Crap, we let them back in the game. The Mocs cut it down to 16 and have the momentum going into half. Last year we were up 15 at Marshall and lost. The Mocs can score in bunches this game is far from over. Man I can't believe we let them back in the game. This isn't last year. We will be ok. We just need to pick up the intensity some.
