Like everyone else I am not happy with our early season results. In a thread started last May about this year's roster I laid out a lot of concerns I have about this year's team and unfortunately a lot of those concerns are coming to fruition. I think our biggest concern right now should be with our coaching staff. Nagy lost 3 experienced assistants including his own son and their replacements are not getting the job done to date. Whoever is breaking down film and coming up with our game plans for each game has not done a good job. Our defense has been horrible. Our in game adjustments are non existent and we are 6 games into the season and we don't have a set starting line up let alone a good rotation. For the love of god I hope they look back at the film from the last few days and figure out that Trey Calvin and Norris Keaton should not be on the court together. AJ Braun was one of the more effective players we had on the court the last 3 days especially when you look at the limited minutes he has played. He averaged 7.3 points and 4 rebounds a game in 16 minutes. I really hope he is inserted into the starting rotation instead of Norris. I think we are a better team when we have 2 bigs on the court together.

The HL needs UIC for their baseball program. They are the second best program in the HL. Hopefully, they will get their basketball program back on track. The HL doesn't need UIC for baseball. The HL is 24th out of 31 conferences in baseball. Losing the second best team in the league wouldn't have any real impact on the conference. It's a shitty conference with or without UIC and more importantly, baseball is not a revenue producing sport. Conferences don't make decisions on additions based off how good a baseball team you have. It's all about football and after that it is all about basketball. If the MVC wants UIC they can have them. It makes the MVC a weaker conference with the addition and it makes the HL a better conference with the subtraction.

Murray State, UT Arlington, and Kansas City are the 3 names being leaked to the media by someone in the MVC. If they are serious about adding UT Arlington and Kansas City, I don't know if I would even want to be invited to the MVC. Both schools get the MVC into bigger media markets but neither school is any good and neither gets any coverage in their media market. Adding UIC would be adding a third crappy school to the conference all at once. They would be doing us a favor by taking them off our hands in the HL. If they could take YSU, IUPUI, and IPFW too the HL might actually have a chance to be a decent conference again.

I 100% agree. I know our staff has really struggled trying to schedule those mid tier P5 teams we could have a chance to compete with. They don’t want to schedule us. They want an easy home win for their money and they don’t think we represent that. The other problem we have is that if we don’t schedule anyone but other mid majors then we don’t have a strong enough SOS to get any post season considerations. We had a very good NET rating last year and didn’t even get an NIT invite. Feedback we got was that we didn’t play a hard enough OOC schedule. Like I said earlier, it helps our program more to get our ass kicked on the road vs a top 10 team than it does beating the crap out of Cedarville.

Not trying to be brash, but why the hell would we take this game if we didn't get a decent paycheck for it? Everybody knew how good Purdue was going to be this season. No benefit to this game in my eyes. Zero. That would be a good question for our coaching staff at a future coaches show. I honestly don’t know their thought process. My guess is that this game was scheduled when our coaches still thought Love might be coming back this year. We didn’t get a great pay day from it but we got a decent payday for a trip we could make in a day. We got a nationally televised game and I think our staff thought we would have made more of a game against Purdue than we did. Win or lose, playing this game helps our strength of schedule. Playing and getting our butt kicked on the road also does more to prepare us for HL play than being on the other end of this scenario. How many times has everyone on this board bitched and moaned that we were playing a bunch of non D1 teams at home at the beginning of the year and running up the score against the cupcakes. Those games truly did nothing for us than helped us pad our stats. If we got nothing else from tonight, we helped Trey and Tanner build their confidence that they can play with anyone.

In the end the only road to the the tournament is to win the Conference tournament so this beat down really changes nothing from that perspective. If they do make it and play another team like Purdue they'll get beat down again. They can't physically defend them, aren't big enough or strong enough to take it inside and can't shoot the 3. Really an enlightening game that shows the state of the program. This was a bad loss to a very very good team. Hopefully our guys will learn something from it tonight. From watching Nagy’s teams the last several years I know we are going to improve as the year goes on. Our defense is going to get much better. Our team rebounding is going to get much better. We are going to be a better team by conference play than we were tonight. The biggest concern I have had the last 2 years is that we have played like an entitled team to a certain degree. We think we are better than other teams and think we can win games with lackluster efforts. We have come out flat way too often and barely pulled out the win or lost games to inferior teams because of it. Getting embarrassed tonight might not be the worst thing in the world for these guys. They just got a serious reality check. I hope they pull their heads out of their asses and start playing like a team hell bent on winning.

I think it is a case of dollar signs overwhelming good thinking. We didn't get a good paycheck for this game
