Holy crap, this is a big blow to the program. When WSU is paying its baseball coach less than $90,000 a year, it is not hard for another program to offer more money.

We lost him because he got to go to his home state and coach a successful Big 10 team. We can’t compete against that.

IU is a good program with good history and I'm sure Mercer will do well in Bloomington. Plus Wright State just isn't able to keep up with the jones when it comes to salary. College baseball is becoming more and more popular and programs in the South and West can actually turn a profit. The former coach at IU had a $250K salary. He left to take the Mississippi State job which is paying him $600K.
However, the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence.
If a coach is going to leave Wright State they better make sure they're going to a place they can be successful. IU is one of those places.
Rob Cooper left Wright State for the Penn State gig after the '13 season and now has to be sweating bullets he doesn't get the axe. PSU never had a good program and probably never will, but they can throw around B1G Money and that's what attracted Cooper. In his 5 years there he is 95-160 and never finished better than 9th.
Lovelady inherited a good returning UCF team and took them to the NCAA last year. This year UCF terribly underachieved finishing 5th in the AAC and missing the NCAA. They weren't even the best program in central Florida. Stetson was clearly the class act this year. The state of Florida is obviously talent rich, but the competition for that talent is ultra high.
I'm sure Jeff will do well there and as long as we have a successful program others will be circling around like vultures to sweep in and pay significantly more than we are able.

It sucks that we are losing another coach but we are in a good position. We have had a lot of success and have had our last 3 coaches move onto much higher paying jobs so we have a really attractive job opening. We should be able to attract a good coach that sees us as a good stepping stone job. Bob Grant has also done a pretty good job lately hiring the right guy for the job.

I like Mercer and think he'll do well, but that's a pretty lofty comparison. Stevens as a mid-major coach took his teams to back-to-back national championship games. Mercer didn't even make the Super Regionals, which would be the equivalent of a Sweet-16 in basketball. If the bar is set at Stevens' level and Mercer fails to make the Super Regionals or CWS within several years does the IU AD fire him for failing to meet IU's lofty expectations/comparisons??

Wright State has retained assistant coaches Matt Talarico and Nate Metzger and development coordinator Diamyn Hall. This is great news, especially keeping Metzger.
“My expectation – as always – is we will not miss a beat. The Raider Gang – as they affectionately call themselves – will continue to be a bully on the block in the Horizon League and a force nationally. It’s up to us to keep that culture going.” – Raiders AD Bob Grant
