The way it sounded in that interview we might not be redshirting anyone. If we are going to play a much faster type of game we are going to need bodies. I look for our current freshman trio to put on more muscle and work on their game because playing time is not guaranteed.

I love everything about that article. Everyone should be sure to read it.
When Nagy says there's probably a spot for 8 to play next year, those 4 freshman are going to have to be quite a bit better than our current options in order to not get redshirted IMO. I can't see Nagy giving up a year of eligibility for someone to play 5 minutes a game if only 8 are going to get quality minutes. The 6 key contributors we have coming back plus Wampler and Manns gets us to 8. These freshman will need to beat out one of those guys to play.

I could see some of the six contributors getting reduced minutes if the newcomers are as good as advertised. Sounds like the best producers will get the playing time.

As a season ticket holder I got my call from one of the players last night. Cole was the player that called and we talked for about 20-25 minutes. Best conversation I have had all week. Tremendous kid, it's no wonder Coach speaks so highly of him. We talked about the two kid who sat out last season and the four players coming in and how excited the fans are with where the program is and what it has the chance to develope into. I told him they really screwed up setting the bar as high as they did. Cole told me this won't be a problem because we haven't seen anything yet. He said everyone understand what the expectations are and where the bar has been set at. He is really excited about the future. I love this group of players and I love this coaching staff.

If we assume that Nagy will stick with an 8 man rotation, or possibly 9, it appears that at least 1 or maybe 2 of the incoming Freshman will see action next season. Winchester's departure certainly opens things up a bit. I assume that Gentry, Hughes, Love, Hall, Wampler, Manns, and Earnsthausen will be in the top 7. Gentry needs a backup at the PG spot, so either Smith or Potter may fill that role. Basile's offensive skills may cut into Earnsthausen's minutes so I could see his minutes increase as the season progresses. So I think at least 2 of our newcomers will see the court this upcoming season.
And if the NCAA changes the rule and allows players to transfer without the 1 year penalty of sitting out, then I think redshritting a player will become obsolete.

BBJones, not everyone would be eligible to transfer without sitting out a year. They would need to have a minimum 3.0 gpa and be on progress to their degree.
As it's proposed the proposal is vague. The min. GPA is between 3.0 and 3.3 paired with the degree requirements. Whose degree requirements? The transfer-out school or the transfer-in school? Wright State's requirements or Stanford's? Schools have differing requirements. What about the freshman phenom who has an undeclared major? What standards apply toward "progress to a degree?" A degree to what...Undeclared?? How is that showing progress?
This is being rushed through without much thought all to address the issue coaches (who often sat out a year, earned a MBA or equivalent, sacrificed for years while starting their families, etc.) can go to another school without penalty, but it's not fair to today's student/athlete who are pampered far beyond what anyone could have dreamed of 20 years ago.

Thanks for the info mrose. I wasn't aware that there may be some strings attached to the proposed transfer rules.

Davenport will not be part of our 2018 class. He did not have the grades/test scores to meet NCAA requirements. I think he will be going to a prep school.

I suspect Davenport would have seen some decent minutes as a Freshman. Does this open the door for Winchester to reconsider or does coach feel that boat has sailed?

Well, that's some news that I don't think any of us saw coming. I seriously doubt we ever see Davenport is a Raider Uniform. Once he gets to prep school and performs like I think he will, some of the big boys will probably come calling. I hope I'm wrong though.
