Kids in the transfer portal these days are not going to waste their time texting and calling our coaches or coming to campus to visit unless they know they have an offer to play for us. Good players have their phones blow up with interest when they hit the portal. I fully agree with Big D that we need to be more aggressive in handing out offers. Odds are the player is still not going to accept on the spot - especially if they have other options. But they at least then have an incentive to take us seriously and come to campus. They aren't coming to campus to try to "earn" an offer from us when they already have viable options elsewhere. It does us no good to have good facilities if we can't get players on campus to even check them out.

I really don't know how the current transfer portal will work out in the long run. At some point in time, I think the programs that year in and year out weed out players to replace them with "better" prospects will pay consequences for the coaching staff's lack of committment to it's players.
This may be naive, but, I hope that the loyalty of a coach to a player who has committed to his program will pay dividends by making that program attractive to players who seek stability. There will always be disgruntled players who feel that they are being under used, and want to prove their value by transferring to a different school, but hopefully, that is going to be a small minority. At this moment, there are 1553 players who have entered the portal, and many of those players will not land in a place where they will improve their playing status.
I realize that this may be a pipe dream, but time will tell.

I realize that this may be a pipe dream, but time will tell. There is a very very large middle ground between what we are doing and a school like Robert Morris who turns over 3/4 of their roster every year. I think what most of us want is for our staff to continue what they are doing but also use the portal as a tool to improve the roster with small roster changes here and their. I hope we can keep the majority of our roster together most years but we are going to lose good players to higher ranked conferences. It’s just the new reality. Having a guy like Trey choosing to stay is going to be more of an exception than the rule. You need to have the ability try to replace guys through the portal. I also like your idea of commitment between the coaches and players in the program but it really needs to be more of a 2 way street. If guys aren’t working on what the staff wants them to be working on we also need to be more aggressive in moving them out and replacing them. Love him or hate him, James Manns was a waste of a scholarship spot for 5 years. He did not develop in our system in a way Nagy wanted and he was not used as a result. He should have been shown the door after year 2 of not changing at the minimum. He would have had a better chance at having the type of career he wanted somewhere else and we could have brought in someone who could have helped us win more games. We shouldn’t be cleaning house every year but we shouldn’t be carrying guys that aren’t pulling their own weight.
