Huskies draw Wright state in ESPNU BracketBustersFeb. 2, 2009 Boston, MA The Northeastern University men’s basketball team will play Wright State in the seventh annual ESPNU BracketBusters event to take place on Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio. The Huskies will await a television assignment and game time, which will be announced on Feb. 9. The game will appear on either ESPN2, ESPNU or ESPN360. ESPNU BracketBusters is a two-day men’s college basketball extravaganza pitting potential NCAA Tournament hopefuls against each other. The Huskies have participated in the event in each of the last three seasons, going 2-1 in non-televised games against Rider, Maine and Holy Cross. The Huskies have met Wright State before, losing to the Raiders at Solomon Court, 59-53, on Dec. 4, 2004 and losing at the Nutter Center, 72-65, on Dec. 27, 2005. As part of the BracketBusters agreement, Northeastern will play a home game with Wright state next season. Northeastern is 15-6 this season, 10-1 in the CAA. The Huskies hold a one-game lead in the Colonial Athletic Association and have won 12 of their last 14 games. NU already holds wins over Providence, Indiana, George Mason and VCU this season. Northeastern’s next game is on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at William & Mary, which will be televised on Comcast SportsNet New England. www.gonu.com/mbasketball/2009/bracketbuster020209.htm

Andy Katz just ripped WSU apart saying Northeastern got screwed and deserved a better team than us. NU fan here. I'm not coming on your boards to start a flame war... with that out of the way. Many NU fans are understandably pissed. Just look at the numbers NU's the number 4 RPI team overall. There's no way that they should have gotten the 4th place team in the horizon, or the MVC Or any league for that matter I'm simply saying as the team that's atop the colonial should get a higher ranked opp RPI wise. I know you guys beat USF, but we've also beaten IU(who admittedly SUCKS this year) and PC( a Solid Big East team). We also just beat the top teams in our conf in ODU MASON AND VCU. They all just got better TV games. The return game isn't great for either team... travel wise the game doesn't make much sense for the huskies. If RPI is a major factor why didn't they really use it here? We get no bump from beating you guys... and if we lose it kills any shot of an at large. Once again I'm not trying to start a flame war, I'm simply saying I understand where Katz is coming from on this. ODU VCU and Mason all get considerably better games both RPI wise and TV wise(this game will likely be ESPN U.. no chance of it being on the deuce given the current tv matchups) It's not as far fetched as you think that NU got kinda screwed.

Honestly you have no shot at an at large bid. The loss to USF by almost 20 will not be overlooked. You got us in the matchup because your a one hit wonder and have no name recognition on the national level compared to ODU, VCU, and Mason. Sorry.

Because they can't. Your in 4th place in your conf. The only way this makes sense is if they made these picks two weeks ago.
Trust me we're not a one hit wonder. We've beaten VCU ODU and Mason. We beat PC, we beat IU, We are 1st in the CAA. You want references.. ok how about asking Andy Katz or Jeff Goodman, Or Gary Parrish, or Kyle Whelliston. Trust me i can go all day, they've all written about how good NU is and also will be next year. People know we're good and we got screwed by ESPN.
This shouldn't be about name rec, which I get, but there is something wrong when VCU Mason and ODU get better games then we did. Aren't the bracketbuster's about putting the teams on display regardless of name rec? I know matchups are meant for TV but this is rediculous. I'm not saying Wright St won't be tough. I've known Brownell from his years at UNC-W and he's a great HC. I'm simply making the argument that we definitely deserved a better game and people around the NCAA know it
PS- to the At large argument It's slim I admit but if we had gotten say Siena as many people predicted(which makes sense in terms of most of the dynamics of the bracketbuster: geography, RPI, Both Teams return a lot next year and Styles of play) we definitely would have been on ESPN 2 and it would have been a game that would have been good for the selection committee to see. as of right now we've got 5 games before the BB. We should at least go 4-1 and may go 5-0(if we beat mason @ mason). That means we'll be best case scenario 20-5 and 15-1 one in conference. Now we're stuck on ESPNU, with a game that kills us RPI wise and does nothing for our conf resume. Once again returns us to the whole freaking principal of the Bracketbuster which is to help the resume of teams playing in it. In NU's case it quite simply does not.

Raiders draw Northeastern in BracketBusterBy Marc Katz Tuesday, February 03, 2009 FAIRBORN — One thing ESPN tries to do with its BracketBusters promotion is match teams of similar ability. Monday, Feb. 2, the network matched Wright State with Northeastern in a televised game Feb. 21 at the Nutter Center. The matchup means the network thinks 13-9 WSU is pretty good. Northeastern, a Boston school playing in the Colonial Athletic Association, is 15-6 and leads the CAA with a 10-1 record. "Absolutely, it's great from that standpoint," said WSU coach Brad Brownell when he was reminded the Raiders would get televised exposure and will have to schedule the Huskies at their place next season. "It's a game against a really good opponent. Our (assistant) coach Mike Winiecki is from that area, and he will be able to take us to some restaurants. The bad news is, Northeastern will be good again." Junior guard Matt Janning leads the Huskies with a 15.6 scoring average on a team whose top four scorers are all underclassmen. While the date of the game has been set, the ESPN platform (ESPN2, ESPNU or ESPN360.com) and tip-off time has not. There are 102 teams participating in the event this season, with only 13 games (26 teams) televised. In addition to WSU, the Horizon League's Wisconsin-Green Bay will have a televised game at Long Beach State and the premier matchup will be the HL's Butler Bulldogs at Davidson (18-3). Butler was 19-1 entering its game at Green Bay Monday. Also, Mid-American Conference member Miami (12-7) will have its game at Evansville (14-7) televised. www.daytondailynews.com/s/content/oh/story/sports/college/wsu/2009/02/03/ddn020309spwsubb.html

The people who did the bracketbuster pairings thinks like all of us WSU fans do. We are a much better team then our record shows. And I think the pairings had to do a little bit with the economy. Trying to keep teams closer. you northeastern fans can think all you want. You are going to come to the Nutt house and lose.

Kyle Whelliston's take from midmajority.com
As for Northeastern, which was sent to Wright State, I've been frank about their chances all year. I've seen them play multiple times, and haven't bought in. I told everyone in a suit who asked that Mason's the best team in that league and that despite the current standings, it's wise to short-sell NU. The Huskies can't rebound, turn over the ball too much, and don't really have plans in place to overcome those weaknesses other than to limit games to as few possessions as possible. Judging from the RPI disparity in this matchup, they might have listened to me. But the Raiders, too, slow things down to hide their considerable set of shortcomings... should be a great game.
Sounds like he may of had some input on selling Northeastern not being good as the rpi indicates while he was at ESPN.

Horizon League shinesBy Marc Katz Tuesday, February 3, 2009 FAIRBORN — I know what ESPN analyst Andy Katz said last night about Butler being the only Horizon League team that is certain to earn an NCAA tournament berth even if it doesn’t qualify as a league champion. He’s right, because that’s the way the NCAA selection committee chooses its teams. If you’re in the Big Ten or ACC or SEC or Big East, you’re pretty much getting a ticket even if you finish 6th or 7th. The power schools get away with this because they load up on non-conference games they can’t lose, or think they can’t (hello Syracuse vs. Cleveland State). They always play at home and they always look for an RPI that’s higher than the public deficit. ESPN must think there’s something about the ability of the Horizon League. All 10 teams participate in the network’s BracketBusters event, and three of the teams will be shown on one of their platforms the weekend of Feb. 20-21, including Wright State’s game with Northeastern. Butler will also be a featured game, as well as Wisconsin-Green Bay. Since only 13 games (26 teams) will be televised, that’s a good indication of the league’s stature. Butler seemed to be well on its way to a second straight undisputed regular-season HL championship until Monday night, when the Bulldogs lost by nine at Green Bay. I don’t know if that’s good or bad for Wright State. Both those teams have yet to visit the Nutter Center. Butler arrives Saturday. Green Bay ends the regular season here on Feb. 28. It shouldn’t matter if Butler wins the league championship or not. That team has proven it can play at a major level, and the Green Bays, Milwaukees, Wright States and Cleveland States should get a chance, too. That WSU was paired in a BracketBuster game with a team as strong as Northeastern, is both good and bad. If the Raiders lose, it solidifies the feeling they should not be an at-large team. If they win, it’s at least an argument they should be in the discussion. Do I think the power conferences are better than the mid-major conferences? Sure. Absolutely. But why don’t we find out for sure. Why don’t some of those teams come out here and play the way Michigan State did a few years ago? the power boys would win more than their share, but they wouldn’t win them all. Make sure you tune in for some of the BracketBusters games. You’ll see for yourself. www.daytondailynews.com/o/content/shared-gen/blogs/dayton/wrightstatesports/

I guess those Northeastern fans dont follow basketball that closely. They only look at our record and think we are not a good team. If we were not a good team we would not get a TV spot. UWM is ahead of us but they did not get a TV game.

Raiders earn some credBy Marc Katz Wednesday, February 4, 2009 FAIRBORN — BracketBusters is a concept dreamed up by ESPN to put more content on its airwaves. It’s also supposed to help the teams involved by giving them exposure, not only to fans, but to committee members who select at-large NCAA tournament teams. In seven seasons, it has grown from just a few mid-major teams to 102 this year, but only 13 of the 51 games will be shown on some kind of ESPN platform, so there is only marginal value to the teams not on television. It’s called BracketBusters because maybe one of the mid-major teams not considered for an at-large berth will break into the NCAA bracket because it was impressive in this game. For the third straight season, Wright State has a televised game. Two years ago, it was on ESPN360.com, just a webcast. Last year, it was on ESPNU. This year, the platform will be announced on Monday, but WSU will be one of the featured teams. Not only that, while the concept is to match teams of equal ability, the Raiders seem to have drawn an opponent that so far has had a much better season. Northeastern is 15-6 and 10-1 in the Colonial Athletic Conference while WSU is 13-9 and 7-4 in the Horizon League. Plus, WSU is just outside the Top 100 in RPI, while Northeastern is in the 50s. “If fans want to see good basketball, here’s a chance,” WSU coach Brad Brownell said. “I guess it helped that we’ve been 13-3 since our (bad) start.” In the world of college basketball, just being mentioned on television is a big deal. Not only will the Raiders get a televised game, but they were mentioned on the selection show as well. That’s not prime-time ESPN every day of the week, but it’s a good start. www.daytondailynews.com/o/content/shared-gen/blogs/dayton/wrightstatesports/
