Recruiting locally can be a big helpBy Marc Katz Thursday, August 13, 2009 FAIRBORN — He is 6-foot-9, can shoot and rebound, but that might not be the best things about Vandalia Butler’s A.J. Pacher. He is also a basketball player who decided to stay home, and play at Wright State. Pacher announced Wednesday he will stay near his home to play for the Raiders, the first “close-in” area player to join WSU as a freshman since Chaminade-Julienne’s Rick Poole made the roster for the 2003-04 season. Poole stayed only that season. When local players stay at home, they often lure fans who watched them as high school players. Better than that, they can lure other top local players to the school if they are successful. It’s always nice to get that big-time recruit from Indiana or Michigan, but if you can get one at home, it’s a bonus. Scott Grote, from Centerville, is home, after spending a season at Duquesne. He sat out a transfer year and played last season. He’s now a junior. Over the years, there have been terrific players from the Dayton area. Some, recently, have gone to UD to help that program. Now, maybe, WSU will get its share. www.daytondailynews.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/dayton/wrightstatesports/entries/2009/08/13/recruiting_locally_can_be_a_bi.html

Demon's game is somewhat similar to Cory Cooperwood.

I believe Darling now has a Wright State offer but hasn't committed yet.

I believe Darling now has a Wright State offer but hasn't committed yet. I've heard the same thing.

It stinks we missed out on Brandenburg. That's 2 guards we were in the lead for and lost at the last minute. (Quinten Rollins was also leaning towards WSU) I hope we get some good news from Cole Darling soon. As much as I like Rob, shooting guard is not as much of a need for us as forward. DeMon Brooks is also visiting capus in 2 weeks. If we are lucky we could have 4 of our 5 open scholarships filled if Cole and DeMon make the (W)right choice and come to WSU. ;D

Brandenburg would have looked really good in the green and gold, but I agree with Nutt House in that SG is more of a luxury than need with our last 3 scholarships. Next year we still have Duggins, Tabler, Grote, Koch, and incoming Kegan Clark that can play the 2-3 positions for us. I could still see us signing a SG if we could get lucky with a really good one like Steele, but I think we will change our focus to point guard. With 3 open scholarships, I think we will sign a true point guard and 2 forwards. We need at least one more post forward and one that could play the 3/4.

I agree with your take on what we will finish out our 2010 class with Irish. I think that it is imperative to sign a PG, then go big after that.

I agree with your take on what we will finish out our 2010 class with Irish. I think that it is imperative to sign a PG, then go big after that. I think that it is imperative to sign 2 more forwards. Next year we only have Cooper Land and Paul Darkwa returning. We already received a commitment from Pacher, but we need a lot more depth at the forward spots. Pacher was a nice pick up but he doesn't sound like he is going to be physically mature enough to make an immediate impact. I'm sure he is going to be given a chance to play because of our depth, but he really needs to put on some serious muscle. Signing a point guard would be nice, but I don't think it's imperative. We still have Evans and Cartharn next year at pg. I think we will bring in 2 forwards and a guard. Ideally, I hope we sign a good high school forward like Darling and can bring in a solid JUCO that can step right in and play while Pacher and Darling put on some weight and get acclimated to college ball. I think we go after the best available guard with our last scholarship. We are still looking at a few really nice true pgs, but we are also in on a few highly ranked combo guards and pure shooting guards. I'd rather sign the best guard available than one that fits a certain position. We still have enough depth next year at pg to be able to do that.

Not disagreeing with you Alumni, but the value in getting a PG this year is to get him here while there is an experienced PG on the court, that way he doesn't have to be forced into action, but can play into action. I think that Cartharn can play PG, but when I watched him play, I felt that he was better suited for SG.
