I have no idea about the schedule but SOS isn't something I lose sleep over. You need to win and hope opponents do well in their other games. You can schedule the top 30 teams but if they can't beat anyone, will you end up with a top 30 SOS? If you start out with a middle of the road SOS but win 30 straight, what is the effect? Last year I think the low point was a SOS near the bottom and a high in the upper half and ended in the top 200. I can't remember it taking anything away from the season.

I can't remember it taking anything away from the season. It killed any shot of us playing in the NIT, which I think our coaches, team, and fans would have preferred we play in.

Raider Grad, you could be right on the SOS keeping us out of the NIT but, I was more in thinking that 3 other factors ( wins, standing in the HL, and RPI ) would come up first. I wasn't waiting by the phone for a call from the NIT but, thanks for thinking it was possible. It would be nice to see more HL teams going to the NIT ( if they can't make NCAA tourney but, I can accept that we weren't going to be the one last season...I do agree that we would have preferred the NIT over the CBI just as we would have preferred a Big Dance invite ). If we had finished first in the HL regular season ( losing conference tourney ), we would have gone to the NIT ( RPI or SOS being whatever ).

I think the point he was trying to make is we shouldn't have to put all of our eggs into one basket. If we play a decent schedule, we should be able t get into the post season. The schedule that we know about so far isn't going to get us there.

Green & Gold, I'm pretty sure we were in the postseason last year. We could have been in the postseason every year but one starting with the 2007 NCAA appearance. If we win about 20 in the regular season again, I'll bet the schedule will be good enough. If you're talking about a Butler type of schedule in their last few years in the HL,that is something different ( and a little late for this season ).

Tommy, I'm pretty sure you know that we were in the fake post season last year. We could have won 10 games and still gotten into the fake post season if we were willing to pay to play. That is the reason no gives a crap about these pay to play tournaments. It's not merit based. Most of our fans want us to play a tough enough schedule so that we can play in the NCAAs or NIT even if we don't win the HL/HL tournament and our current schedule isn't even close to getting us an invite into either one.

Tommy, I think most of our fans know that Donlon completely watered down our schedule last year because he was concerned about his job coming off of the disaster of a season we had in 2011/12. We had a SOS of 223 last year which is pathetic. If you go back to Brownell's last few years at Wright State our SOS were 132 (10/11), 152 (09/10), and 124 (08/09). We have a really good team this year. We should play a schedule worthy of that talent, not every cupcake we can schedule.

Tommygun, As an Ohio State football fan I don't like seeing comments in the press about OSU's relatively weak schedule. In that same vein, I don't like to give ammunition to the UD fans when they point to our SOS last season and then see us replicate the same type of schedule this coming season. I am still hoping to see some formidable opponents this next season, even if we are on the road.

Last year we started out against teams that were expected to play better, is it our fault that didn't happen? We are a mid-major. We have had to make due too many times over the years. It is what it is and I think last year was a good season. Let's see some money so we never have to decide between an exempt tournament and a practice facility. Let's see some money so the coaches don't recruit only places that allow them to get home on the same day. So, we have made some strides. OSU can have any football schedule they want ( and at home to boot for OOC ), pretty sure WSU doesn't have the luxury to get the number of home games necessary versus whomover they want. UD isn't on the schedule, I have no idea what they think or care to find out. ( they'd have to go to a WSU game for me to see them ).

Last year we started out against teams that were expected to play better, is it our fault that didn't happen? Well, if our coaches REALLY thought the teams we scheduled were going to be better than they were last year, than yeah it is their fault. Most of the teams we signed last year to new contracts sucked. It was pretty common knowledge that we were going to be playing a horrible schedule going into last season. It was discussed before last season started here: link I don't think our coaches are idiots. I think they knew they were scheduling a bunch of easy wins and that is exactly what they got.

I am still in a good mood after yesterday's charity event. It was good to see players past and present along with most of the current staff. I won't suggest we try schedules based on team colors, nicknames or alphabetical. I think everyone presents a challenge. If you don't like Billy's schedule last year, did you like it a couple of seasons ago? Played some big name schools and a few good games were at home. What was our SOS and RPI? Looking forward to the season, if we start against a non D-1 I'd still look forward to being there. As far as team expectations, wouldn't it be fair to say other teams ( in and out of conference ) might have had unfavorable responses of seeing us on their schedule too? Or, is playing big bad WSU the highlight of college basketball?

If you don't like Billy's schedule last year, did you like it a couple of seasons ago? Played some big name schools and a few good games were at home. What was our SOS and RPI? Two years ago we did play a good schedule. Our SOS was 156. Most fans thought we overscheduled for that season because we had such an inexperienced team. Donlon could have played a weaker schedule with that team and I think he would have gotten a similar response to last season when we played a weak schedule...most fans didn't love the schedule but they accepted it because we had a ton of new players on our roster and didn't expect to be very good. There is a very big difference between last year or even the year before that and this season. No one thought we were going to be very good the last 2 years. This year we are going to be everyone's HL preseason favorites. This is the year we should be upgrading the schedule because we have the team that can be competitive against better competition.

Tommygunn, you seem to be saying that whether we finish the season ranked in the top 100, the low 100s, or over 200,along with a comparable SOS, it makes no difference to you. As long as WSU suits up and plays a game against somebody, you are happy. In that case, I am very happy for you. I think you'll really enjoy the upcoming season.

Wolf41, that is pretty close ( just as I didn't give up on going to see the Lady Raiders after it was obvious it wasn't going to be their year ). I usually notice the SOS changes drastically during the season ( usually a top 100 at some point...usually at the bottom at some point...only to end up somewhere in the middle ). The only thing that I would add is that it would be nice to have a winning record and an invite to postseason ( whether we accept or not...I favor going, if asked ). I started going back in the 70's so, I truly remember getting turned down for a date because we weren't playing someone the girl heard of...she obviously didn't know D2 basketball teams ( I went without her...should I have asked if she would rather do something else on a basketball night? Nope )
