It makes sense at the time. Just think he just won coach of the year and he had over a 20 win season and was the pre-season pick to win the league.

If true, this sickens me. This is a public institution. If you take such action why not fess up? Why keep it a secret? If true, the top brass of WSU should be very embarrassed by their covert operations. If they can't be open on such a minor action how can they be trusted on anything? Today I am ashamed of WSU.

If this is true then I'm proud of the university. I'd imagine that someone with a sense of humor would want the people on message boards to worry about other things ( by making sure we knew ). As Wolf41 said, this is a public university so I doubt anyone was hiding anything. Why don't you find the place salaries are listed for state employees...please check it daily to see if someone in Business Administration got a raise. "Sickens"? Wow!

tommygun, Why are you "proud" of WSU of hiding such a thing? That bewilders me. Salaries at WSU are supposed to be open to the public. You use to be able to go to the Library and look at a budget book and page to any department you had an interest in. Usually when a university extends a contract of a coach it is announced in the newspapers and on the TV news. But you are "proud" of WSU, a public institution, keeping it a secret? That I don't understand. I assume you'd be "proud" if the city kept such matters private as well. How about the state?

I think this extension sends a very clear message from the univ. Post season success is not important, not really required for this position. Just build a crappy schedule and win 20 games and you are good to go.

Here is the actual quote by BD:
“Whether they had an opening or not, you want your alma mater to be successful. I love where I am. Dr. (Dan) Abrahamowicz, President (David) Hopkins, (Director of Athletics) Bob Grant, I love our team, I love our players. I am not going to comment on another job.”
I was really gung ho about re-signing him last year...as this year went on, I came to have the same doubts as what others have expressed, and I still have all those concerns. Anybody who's coached has probably heard the phrase "You're not as good as you think, but not as bad as people say you are." I think that sums up Donlon well. Four years into his first head coaching gig, and there has been ups and downs. I think that is also important to remember to...this is his first head coaching job, and a Brad Stevens is the exception not the rule. I don't think it is chance that his third and fourth years were better than his first two (mostly speaking to league play).
I expect this team to be in the hunt again in the HL next year---in response to an earlier post in a different threat, the HL about the same strength from RPI point of view as it was when Butler left, so I don't think Donlon's guiding a 3 seed to the finals back to back should be dismissed as the result of a weak conference. Likewise, I think he should be accountable for late-game foibles in the big games, so hopefully this is a very incentive laden extension.

Should be performance based. Should be based on:
Graduation rates Recruiting good kids (School Reputation) Wins RPI Attendance NCAA appearances. NIT appearances.
The last five not in any particular order. The top 2 are the most important. A lot of coaches can get those two top ones right but the bottom five are the challenge.

hh, Nice summary. I would add a measurement of the quality of the team's OOC, prior to beginning HL play. This is easy to attain by checking the RPI after our final OOC game. True it might change by year's end, but this reading would give us a measure of the OOC scheduling being done. A second item to consider is running a "clean" program year in and year out. We don't need any scandals at WSU. I think the coaches and administrative staff at WSU have done an excellent job on the issue.

I can confirm that Louisville assistant Kevin Keatts has accepted the head coaching position at UNC-Wilmington.

Guess that ends the rumors. The Guardian just tweeted the same thing. Guess we can let this thread die now.
