With these announcements I think he is possibly going somewhere as HC but not sure we will be that team. If we are that will mean a lean year next year but when they become eligible, WOW.

Cliff Warren is slightly better than Kelsey in that at least he got his team to an NIT twice. But he did struggle his last three years at Jackonsville. Marty Simmons is probably an upgrade over Donlon, but I'd rather have Nagy or Dooley before him.

I'm really not keen on having a coach without d1 hc experience.
I keep going back to BG's comments. He promised a home run...I'm not sure that anyone without d1 hc experience can be viewed as a homerun.
I think this league is strong enough to not be most coaches first real gig.
Having said that, considering all aspects, if the guy can recruit, and has proven that, that helps go against no hc experience.
I still think hc experience is pivotal, so Boals doesn't really stand out to me at this point...but those recruits possibly moving with him sways me, but that's all a crapshoot. Seems pretty unlikely we'd get three rated recruits, but stranger things have happened.

Pass on Jeff Boals. I also follow Ohio State's team and their assistant coaching staff is awful.
We need to find an up-and-coming head coach from a smaller school. Either a smaller D-I school or even a D-II coach who's been extremely successful.

Why are people so down on Pat Kelsey? I would definitely prefer Scott Nagy from South Dakota State, but Kelsey is a young guy with an impressive resume: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Kelsey

I think actual head coaching experience is a critical factor in hiring the next coach vs getting an assistant at an upper tier program, even if they come from the D2/D3 level. Both Bo Ryan and Bruce Pearl won national titles at lower levels before moving up to D1, and they both excelled at D1 once they got the chance. I'm sure with a little research I could find several others. And then you have Jim Tressel, and I seem to recall he he did okay coaching inside the Horseshoe. Yea, its a different sport, but if you can build a program and consistently get that lower level program into postseason play, the odds are good you will do it at the D1 level. I just want to see a young guy come in here with some real fire in his belly who can light fire inside the Nutter Center. Winners are winner's regardless of what college level they came from.

Yeah we did the on-the-job training for the past 6 years. I'm ready for a coach who has already cut his teeth somewhere else first.

Twiz, you got me thinking so I did some digging on Pat Kelsey. He is a Cincinnati native and former Xavier point guard and was Associate Head Coach for two years at X (as assistant at Wake Forest before that) before taking the Winthrop job, where has won 20 or more games the last two of three years, including a regular season title and 23 wins this year. What intrigues me is Winthrop was 15th in the country in scoring at approx. 83 ppg and also played a tenacious aggressive style of defense. If fans want a change back to old Raider Roundball, that sounds interesting to say the least. Midwest ties, great recruiting while at X and Wake. Hmmm
But I also like Dooley at FGCU and Nagy at SDSU. When I can I will educate myself on the Evansville coach and others mentioned.

We need a coach or an assistant coach that has div. 1 experience from a major school that knows where to recruit plain and simple. A 2 or 3 star recruit is not going to pay attention to a no name coach that has not been anywhere or done anything. I don't care if he is a retread head coach or a 2nd in command at a big 5 school. That would be a plus.
