We need to wait and see who Nagy might bring in for help. I can see Daniel devoting into a small forward that would give the opposition fits to cover. But it will be what it will be. If the 6'8" kid follows coach here that could help. He could get some serious time here. Also there are some decent JUCO's left.

The 6'8" 300 pound kid would be nice to have but he signed a letter at SDSU. It all depends on wether they want to let him out of it and whether he wants to come to Ohio. Transfers like this are a messy situation. We've gained some and lost some when incoming players followed coaches.
And S. Davis has been in the gym playing with the other guys. I hope he returns but I have some serious concerns about his lower body and whether it can handle D1 competition. He's got athleticism and upper body strength but he's weak in the legs.

I understand but most schools don't want to keep an incoming freshman in this situation.

and I agree with you. Coach Nagy left SDSU with good feelings on both sides as far as I can tell. If the kid wants to come to Ohio- and if he got a good look at our facilities why wouldn't he?- I think they would release him.

BOOM! I already like Coach Nagy's recruiting efforts. Sounds like Grant had one foot out the door (at least) but Coach was able to convince him to stay. Well done.
And thank you, Grant. You will not be disappointed. Glad you're still a Raider and look forward to seeing you lead this quality group of players over the next 2 years.

Could he follow the coach?

Absolutely could. Remains to be seen if he will. Coach Nagy seems to be offering quite a few recruits that he also targeted as SDSU so it wouldn't surprise me if he tried to convince him to come here.

Ah man, that would be nice.. Vollbrecht is a big, tough dude. Good HS football player too.
We need a big dude like him (6-9, 280) to go along with the skinny bigs we have like Mortensen and Ernsthausen.
This reminds me of when Brownell took over and immediately brought Duggins (who had committed to UNCW) with him. Duggins ended up being one of the best players we've seen around here in a while. Different positions, obviously, just saying this situation reminds me of that one. Hopefully it materializes.

I've done a cursory search and found Vollbrecht was a 3-star football recruit with offers from Illinois and BG. He tore his ACL before basketball season his senior year.
I can't find any ratings for the kid in basketball. Found this little blurb in an article from when he committed. Sounds like we could have an edge.
"Vollbrecht had a number of basketball opportunities as well. His final schools included Northern Illinois, Western Illinois, Maryland-Baltimore County as well as UMass-Lowell. It was South Dakota State that won the race. “The family aspect was the strongest (at South Dakota State),” said Loudon Vollbrecht. “Other teams talk about it, but they have it.” "

Geneva, IL is just west of Chicago. I looked up the driving distance from Geneva to Dayton: 5 hours, 6 minutes.
Distance from Geneva to Brookings, SD (SDSU)? 8 hours, 41 minutes.
Not only would Vollbrecht be following the head coach he originally committed to, he would be going to a university that's 3.5 hours closer to his home than the school he originally committed to.

Lets not get ahead of ourselves.... The number one thing that comes to my mind is the question is Vollbrecht trying to be a two sport athlete? If so, we are at a disadvantage. SDSU has D1 football and basketball. According to Gerb, he's ranked higher as a Football player. If he's 100% committed to basketball only then we are in good shape.. but that's the question..
#2 can someone educate me to what our current Scholarship is looking like? I'm assuming if nobody leaves we have one available for him?

These are the current 9 scholarship players for next year, if they all return. Hughes, Vest, Mitchell, Benzinger, Neel, Mortensen, Ernsthausen, Alstork, & R. Davis. Winchester & Custer are signed for next year, so that makes 11. So by my count there are 2 scholarships to give. Its my understanding that Steven Davis was not part of the team last year so that's why I'm not counting him. In a previous thread I recall someone, probably Big D, state that S. Davis's scholarship was given to Ernsthausen this past season. He was originally going to be a walk on until Davis's scholarship opened up.
