These are the current 9 scholarship players for next year, if they all return. Hughes, Vest, Mitchell, Benzinger, Neel, Mortensen, Ernsthausen, Alstork, & R. Davis. Winchester & Custer are signed for next year, so that makes 11. So by my count there are 2 scholarships to give. Its my understanding that Steven Davis was not part of the team last year so that's why I'm not counting him. In a previous thread I recall someone, probably Big D, state that S. Davis's scholarship was given to Ernsthausen this past season. He was originally going to be a walk on until Davis's scholarship opened up. S Davis was a medical red shirt for us last year and counted as one of our 13 scholarship players. Parker was slated to get his scholarship next year if Davis decided to leave. That was reported before Donlon was fired in the DDN. Currently we have Hughes, Vest, Mitchell, Benzinger, Neel, Ernsthausen, Alstork, Winchester, and Custer for next year. S Davis is unknown at this point. He is working out with the team so he may have decided to stay. R Davis is transferring. Mortensen is also listed as transferring. Nothing has been officially released yet by WSU but both are listed on Jeff Goodmans transfer list on ESPN and he usually isn't wrong.

I can't find any ratings for the kid in basketball.
Geneva 2016 6’9” center Loudon Vollbrecht tells PrepHoopsIllinois he has decommitted from South Dakota State and reopened his recruitment. Vollbrecht received his release on Monday afternoon. The state’s #16 overall prospect and #2 center told us why he decided to put himself back on the board.

Mortensen also asked for his release? Booo. Hopefully Coach Nagy talks some sense into him.

Can't say I didn't expect this, but I was hoping Nagy would convince him to stay. He's going to put up a lot of points in the right system.

Has Mortensen been around the team lately? Does anyone know?

This board is not extremely active this time of the year. That being said, no one has heard anything about whether Mortensen is staying or leaving?

Last year I consulted with the family of a D1 player that was on the transfer list. He received some serious love from a couple of D1 programs but, not from the school he had hoped for, he stayed put ( in the end ).
Daniel was one of four players that attended Tuesdays' baseball game ( they came in together...they left together ). We know from Nagy's interview on WING that the company line is that one scholarship is available. If you pay attention to ESPN's Jeff Goodman, the transfer list continues to grow with no end in sight. Roderick and Daniel M continue to be on the list. When my D1 guy decided to stay last year, it was announced and his name was removed ( from the transfer list ). At this point, it is wait and see I guess.
I would encourage him to do what he thinks is best for his future.

Pretty excited about everything that is going on with our basketball program right now.

twizman, I honestly don't know about the timing of a possible transfer involving Daniel or Roderick ( maybe Big D knows ). For some reason we knew about Grant and the release and decision on staying.
I can think of a few instances where student-athletes continued to hang out with teammates ( possibly roommates ) until the end of the school year and ended up leaving. Since this week is finals week with graduation on Saturday...can only hope that parents won't be paying a visit this week that involves packing ( at least not with the intention of never coming back for a session during the summer ).
Hope coaches and players are on the same page.

Oh, I hear you. It doesn't mean for sure he's staying, but I consider that a good sign.
It's impressive how quickly Coach Nagy talked Grant Benzinger into staying, when it looked like he was gone. I'm confident everything will work out well. We'll lose a player or two most likely, but hopefully we just lose one (and it's someone that won't really hurt us like Rod Davis).

Well, you have to be careful with the handling of players that leave. I know some people may not care if someone leaves but, it can create problems for the guys that stay...that's why some coaches help make sure players end up in an acceptable situation. Of course, there could be cases where certain players that were too much trouble and it was good riddance by everyone ( that's why I always thought you could have 8 or 9 guys happy and the trick was to keep the ones that weren't sure away from the ones not happy ).
Like I posted, I don't know the timing of the transfer list inclusion...perhaps it was before Nagy was hired...perhaps it was after.
I can live with the "confident everything will work out well" sentiment.

Coach Nagy has indicated that our roster will look very different next year from how it looks right now. Guessing that means we have more than 1 player leave the program. But we'll see...

Maybe he was referring to the seniors that have left. Plus we will have some guys that were on the bench that will be getting PT. Maybe he has an eye on a JUCO or maybe bringing a walk on expecting to have open scholarship in the future. Hard to tell.

I heard Mortensen will be going back to Denmark to play professionally and that Nagy will be bringing two players that had committed to SDSU. No names, though.
Hopefully, we will hear something official soon.
