Playing 2 homes games vs D2/3 schools is an embarrassment in my opinion. If we want to be taken as a serious D1 program, then play an all D1 schedule. The attendance for these games are terrible, and if we actually pay to have them show up, I have to believe these games are net losers money wise. Sure, in a perfect world I would rather see some 2 for 1 games vs teams like an Iowa State, Ole Miss, Rutgers, etc, but that just seems nearly impossible to do. And with the all of P5/6 conferences eventually going to a 20 game conference schedule( Big 10 is doing this upcoming season) I think those kind of deals will be a thing of the past. Quite frankly, I would rather see us take 1 or 2 buy games vs the likes of Duke, Kansas, etc vs these D2/3 home games. At least we get some much needed revenue to help offset other expenses, and those games are usually on TV which gives us some much needed exposure. With the talent we have now and with the recruits coming in, I think we could at least be competitive in games vs the elites in the near future. Ya can't beat'em if ya don't play'em. I understand your point, but you are also not taking into consideration the psychological part of playing those big name teams. I understand we would learn something from playing them, but ultimately I think it does worse getting blown out by the likes of Duke than it does winning a game over anyone.

Our guys just got blown out by Tennessee on the national stage. That has to hurt the psyche a lot more than getting blown out in December at Cameron Indoor or Phog Allen Fieldhouse. The only way our guys can learn to compete against the big boys is to play them. Playing the Ohio Valley Fighting Scots sure didn't prepare them for winning a game in March in the Dance.

UMBC lost to Albany 83-39 this season, went on to defeat Virginia. I think it's more how you handle the loss
Take the Tennessee game, do we look at this as wow we just got our butts kicked and there's no way we could ever compete with these guys, or do we look at the tape and say if we shoot like we normally do we're in this game
If we want to make some noise in March, I think we need to challenge ourselves more in Nov/Dec. Playing tougher teams will only make playing weaker teams seem easier for us
I would also like to throw in that a tougher schedule can be used as a recruiting tool as well. Guys with aspirations of playing for OSU, UC, Xavier, etc. that don't get that scholarship I'm sure would love the opportunity to show that school what they were missing out on

I do get the point and I'm not saying we should never schedule those games, but we need to be picky when it comes to scheduling them (which others have already said).

I must say, bbj, the fighting scots were my favorite nickname of an opponent. too bad that they could have brought every student in the school and not filled up a section of the Nutter. probably could have squeezed in the faculty too.

Playing a tourney in Idaho over Thanksgiving I believe. There's only 3 D I programs in Idaho. Let's hope Boise State is putting something together. Being in the Mountain West and their recent success to earn a NCAA/NIT invite they would be able to attract better quality programs than if it's a MTE hosted by either Idaho or Idaho State. If we're really going out to Idaho for a MTE then it isn't with Boise State. They're committed to a MTE in the Cayman Islands.

Likely. They played in it in 2015 when at SDSU. Gives us neutral site games against decent competition depending on what division we are in. Likely won’t be great teams but a step up from who we would play at home over Thanksgiving the past few years.

We're in the Cancun Challenge according to the Penn State message board. Riviera Division.
Riviera: Penn State SMU Wright State TBA
Mayan: Elon Jacksonville State North Florida Western Carolina
We'll have 2 home games vs a "Mayan" division opponent.

That sounds great. May give TV coverage also. Would be great to beat PSU and could be done with team next year.

That sounds great. May give TV coverage also. Would be great to beat PSU and could be done with team next year. 1) CBS Sports Network has televised the Riviera Division games the past 7 years. There's no reason to believe they won't carry it for an 8th year. There are still a few prominent teams from Power-5 and Major conferences not "officially" in a MTE. Several of those are in the SEC and CBS and the SEC have a long and good relationship. I'm not speculating it will be a SEC team, but I wouldn't be surprised. Nor would I be surprised if it's an A-10 (St. Louis?) or MVC program. Either way, I have a feeling that TBA team will be from a very respectable conference. 2) I'm going to hang-on to the Raiders for the entire season next year--after we beat Penn State--and not be done until we make some noise in the NCAA.

That is not what I could call a decent line-up, but it will have to do.
