This is not good. If we have to discuss what role that athletics will have in the future then my guess is that the discussion will be on reducing not making it greater.

I see this more as a committee that is being put together to figure out what sports we need to add to get us back to the D1 minimum after our 2 year waiver is up and how to keep athletics fiscally responsible at Wright State.

That makes sense. Trying to satisfy the crazy Title IX crap should be done as inexpensively as possible. One of the Big 10 schools I can't remember which one, was enlarging their walk-on program for football and they just added about 30 non-scholarship roster spots to obscure women teams like crew to balance out the number.

This should be done by Bob Grant, he knows a lot more about how various sports impact athletics than the potential university eggheads that might be on the committee.

So, the thing is, you need money to run a sport. The school sponsors sports. The school does not have money. There’s a line to follow there.
If we were to add two sports, it’d mean that either a) Bob Grant played three different lotteries and won all of them, or b) the board of directors declared athletics to be more important to our academic institution than actual academics. I don’t like it, but that’s the situation.
Brace yourselves, fellas. I have a feeling this could get rough.

Like, is that a legit possibility? I'm not sure what "worse" could look like. But with reduced enrollment, lost income, and programs already cut...what else is there to cut without moving down a peg?

The committee consists of Wright State trustees Marty Grunder, Andrew Platt, Doug Fecher and Brittney Whiteside. Platt and Whiteside are Wright State graduates and competed in golf and women's basketball respectively for the Raiders. I don't think these people are going to try to drop Wright State down to D2 or D3 for those of you that are concerned by this article. I think their goal is going to be to find a way for Wright State athletics to weather the storm of Covid and the Universities financial woes until the university is under better financial footing.

Except the fact that you are wrong about Wright State not having money. We are projected to finish this year with a 7 million dollar surplus. We are making cuts to our faculty because enrollment is down and we have more faculty members than are needed to teach the number of students we are projected to have the next several years. Financially, we are budgeting to spend less than what we plan on bringing in so we will remain profitable. The money we budget to fund athletics is a very very small portion of Wright State's overall budget and the positive exposure we get from athletics is valued at much more than what the university spends on athletics.

I think this committee is being formed to help us decide if we want to move athletics to the Big East, Big 10, or ACC

It would be interesting to see if their math works for state schools too. It’s easy to make a profit from tuition from athletes only getting partial scholarships when you are a private school charging 30-40 thousand per year to attend your university. I don’t know if the math would work for a school like Wright State which is one of the most affordable schools in Ohio.
