Wright state is cutting softball as well as men’s and women’s tennis. We are going to file a waiver to remain a DI school I believe. Wow.

This is probably the peak of athletic success as a whole across the department between all of the success we’ve seen with men’s soccer, baseball, volleyball, basketball, women’s basketball, etc. and we may drop down to D2. Let’s just hope the waiver is granted due to circumstances out of our control. I’m hopeful

If we don’t, I see a lot changes in athletics going to happen quickly that will make it hard to recover from.

We’re not dropping to Div II. There’s a TON of institutions nationwide in our position, better AND worse. We’ll get a waiver to remain Div I, just as many of those others will. We all largely share the same catalyst, Covid-19. The NCAA knows this. Step away from the edge.

Does anyone really think our athletic department would have made this announcement without consulting with and getting some assurances from the NCAA that the waiver would be given. We aren't dropping to D2. We are doing this for a year due to downturn of our finances due to coronavirus. It sucks but needed to be done. Ohio State announced today that they will have student's back on campus this fall. I fully expect Wright State and every other school in the state to follow suit with an announcement soon. I have high hopes that Wright State will get things turned around financially and we will be able to add back sports in the future.

Wright State is the only school that I know of that dropped more women's sports than men's sports. So, we have that going for us. I suspect more Mid/Low-Majors will be dropping sports teams.

Does anyone know what is the cost/budget for the women's softball team? Could private donors bring it back?

Does anyone know what is the cost/budget for the women's softball team? Could private donors bring it back? The athletic department had to cut 2 million from the budget. The 3 sports that were eliminated weren't the only ones hit. Every sport lost funding due to the cuts. The hope is that the NCAA will give us a 2 year waiver to add 3 sports to get us back to the NCAA minimum. Softball isn't getting saved through private donors. Since the impact of the coronavirus hit, the athletic department knew the university was going to be impacted and funding would be cut. They have tried to raise funds on their own to offset the cuts the university had to make. It obviously didn't work. The economy has been hit hard by the pandemic and people are not willing or able to donate right now. Hopefully the NCAA will give us the waiver and hopefully the university will be able to get back on track.

I assume the NCAA is going to grant us this waiver for at least 1 year, hopefully 2 years like they did for Central Michigan. With the cluster all schools are in because of the coronavirus I cannot imagine the NCAA wants to negative PR they would get by not giving us the waiver. The bigger question in my mind is what will Grant decide to do in 2 years when he needs to add 3 sports back. I don't know what the cost of running softball, and men's and women's tennis is. WSU could easily just bring those 3 sports back but they could just as easily add 3 less expensive sports. Cheaper options might be men's and women's bowling. We already have successful non scholarship teams so the transition might be pretty easy. We have a men's golf team. We could easily add a women's team. We could bring back swimming and diving or wrestling. My guess is that we add the 3 most cost effective sports to regain the minimum standing needed to be D1.

Bringing back the tennis programs and adding women's golf seems like the most effective route in the future.

I'm thinking we add men's and women's lacrosse. We already have the facilities that aren't used in the spring. It's popularity is growing. Each team typically has 48 players with only 12.6 scholarships spread out. It's an equivalency sport which means all scholarships are not full scholarships and coaches can divide the value between as many players as they see fit. So we would increase enrollment by adding these sports as each team would basically add 36 full-time paying students. Detroit already has a nationally ranked team, Cleveland State has a team and if we add Robert Morris they already have lacrosse too. I could see lacrosse becoming a horizon league sponsored sport in the future.
