Surprised there’s been zero commentary on this since it was posted. We’ve got some big time losing programs with an ncaa transfer situation at exactly the wrong time. WSU is losing cash for losing programs. I don’t want to see it but I think the odds are D2. D2 or 3 is almost a certainty in WSU’s near future. It’s not been talked about because those in the know don’t want to accept it.

You really need to go back and read some of the earlier articles in the thread because dropping to D2 isn’t even one of the potential options because the cost of running a D2 athletic department isn’t a whole lot less than running a D1 athletic department. We are either adding sports back and remaining D1, dropping down to D3, or dropping sports all together. From everyone I have talked to in the athletic department and on our board of trustees I can tell you we have no plans to drop out of D1. Quite honestly, if I thought otherwise I would have already moved on from this site. I won't be following or financially supporting a D3 program.

Would really suck and be embarrassing if we dropped to a lower level.

WSU is losing cash for losing programs. I don’t want to see it but I think the odds are D2. I don't frequently comment on this nonsense, and have no inside information on dropping divisions. Where is this comment about "losing programs" is coming from? We are in the midst of the most successful run in Wright State's athletic history BY FAR. This is just off the top of my head: - Men's basketball won the league 3 years in a row after finishing 2nd four years ago ... top 20 in offense AND defense last seasons and half-dozen other categories (will never happen again so you should lower your expectations) ... Nagy is literally the 5th most successful coach in Horizon League history - Women's basketball just won the NCAA tournament game and has been the top team in the league for 5 years ... yes - rebuilding this year exclusively due to success - Volleyball just won the NCAA tournament game last season and beat major conf teams three years in a row (got an at large bid last year) - Soccer had 3 players drafted in MLS in the last few seasons and just won the NCAA tournament game (and lost another one on PKs) - Baseball has been in Top 25 a couple of times in the last few years .. nearly a .500 record against major conf teams in the last 10 years (100% on the road) ... multiple players drafted in MLB every year Yes, lost a few games in the last month. In fact, I don't think this success is sustainable on this level, however it has been an incredible run of results. By the way, WSU is not losing cash. The number of students has declined (so is for every single state school in Ohio besides OSU), but the university has actually shown to be able to adjust in the last few years after some challenges from prior administrations.

So to sum it all up. Athletics isn't going anywhere. We aren't dropping out of D1. And the WSU faculty union can eat a bag of dicks if they want to bitch and moan about it!

Some important points I heard during the presentation by the consultants: Commended athletics for graduation rates and GPA compared to other D1 programs, said dozens of other schools are asking for the same review of their athletic operations and have similar issues, the University leadership needs to set goals for what athletics should bring to the table (enrollment, retention, student/alumni pride, etc). Overall a positive reflection on the department.

They also talked about putting all club sports under the umbrella of the athletic department. When you look at that and the emphasis on how athletics can help drive enrollment, I am really curious to see what the university and athletic department does in the near future. We all know that we need to add 3 sports back, 1 mens/2 womens to get back to the D1 minimum. I really hope to see the university make an investment into athletics in a way that will help enrollment and increase student body involvement. Here is what I hope will happen. 1. Club sports do get placed under the athletic department umbrella. Money we already put into club sports can be better organized/utilized when managed by Bob Grant and his staff. 2. We add 3 low cost scholarship sports to get us back to the D1 minimun: men's tennis (4.5 scholarships), women's tennis (8), & women's golf (6) 3. We add big/popular non-scholarship sports that will drive enrollment and create some student interest on campus. --non-scholarship football. We already have a turf field. Seating could be added to it for games or it could just be used for practices and Alumni field could be updated for football. The school across town has non-scholarship football and plays in the Pioneer football league with the likes of Butler, Valpo, Morehead State, Drake, etc. I'm sure we could get some students interested in watching some games vs those teams. The school from across town has over 100 kids on their roster. We would have to put money into equipment, coaches, and travel but I think adding 100+ kids to our enrollment might make that a worthy investment. --non-scholarship men's and/or women's lacrosse. As with football, we already have the facilities needed or easily modified to add lacrosse. It's played in the spring so there wouldn't be competition for the use of alumni field with soccer or football. I think students would come out and support it. You could also add another 30-40 kids to our enrollment for each team. In state tuition is $9,519. Out of state tuition is $18,937. On campus room/board and other expenses is listed at $15,100. If we add another roughly 200 non-scholarship athletes to Wright State, we bring in between 4.9 million to 6.8 million more revenue to the university. I'm sure we can sponsor those 3 sports for a small percentage of that.
