I'd wager that the staff gave our open scholarship to Andy Neff for his senior year since it looked like we weren't going to be able to use it. In regards to Garcia, I don't know what to think of him. He is 6-8 and looks really athletic if you watch his highlight videos. I don't understand why he was a noncontributor in high school. I don't understand why he would walk away from the only school that offered him a scholarship, San Diego, before school even started to end up as a walk on here. I really hope he is a late bloomer and Coach Nagy can develop him like he has so many other players, but I'm not going to expect anything from him this year. I'd be surprised if he doesn't end up redshirting.

I see Garcia as a very low risk, high reward gamble. He is paying his own way to be here, so you have to think he is motivated to play D1 ball and he is being given a very extended audition to prove he deserves to be on scholarship. If all works out, I think he will redshirt this year while he puts on weight and learns our system. He will be given a scholarship and be a really nice addition to next year's team. If he can't cut it, he won't be here next year. No harm, no foul. We aren't tying up a scholarship on him this year, so he is basically paying his way to get an extended audition for next year. I hope he puts it all together and ends up being a steal for Nagy and co.

I really hope he is a late bloomer and Coach Nagy can develop him like he has so many other players, but I'm not going to expect anything from him this year. I'd be surprised if he doesn't end up redshirting. Alex Garcia is a young man Wright State started recruiting last summer. Coach Trice saw him play in an AAU tournament or open gym (I honestly don't remember what I was told at that time) and invited him to campus for an unofficial visit. He worked out for our coaches and I have been told the staff really liked him and considered him next in line to get an offer if we didn't get a commitment from Drey Carter. I think we all know we signed Drey Carter in the fall and never ended up offering Garcia. When Tanner and Grant left unexpectedly after last season the staff was getting ready to reach out to Garcia but was a little too late as he had already committed to San Diego. I don't know what lead him to leave San Diego after enrolling during the summer, but we lucked out and landed him now. He is a similar type athlete to Drey Carter and current WSU recruit Jermaine Coleman. In today's basketball lingo, they are all position-less athletes. In the traditional line up sense, they could play SG, SF, or PF all in a similar way Tim Finke has been used in his career at Wright State. Garcia is behind all of his teammates due to missing all of summer practices. I think it is safe to predict he will red-shirt but at the same time, I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see him play this year. He is very athletic, plays with a ton of energy, and is a very willing defender. That alone could earn him some playing time. Realistically, I think he red-shirts. I think he gets placed on scholarship after first semester and I think he has a chance to develop into a really good player for us over the next couple of years. In regards to recruiting, we have 3 guards committed for next year and as I said above, I think Garcia is given a scholarship after first semester. That leaves us with one scholarship for next year and Jermaine Coleman is the only 2023 recruit with a current offer from Wright State. Landing him would be a great finish to a monster class for Wright State. The next few years should be a great time to be a Raider fan!

One other quote from the article that hasn't been mentioned yet is that " 6-foot-8, 235-pound forward Brandon Noel could be a breakout star" this season. I've been waiting 3 years to see this kid play in college. Saw him play multiple times in high school and I love the way he plays the game. Here are a few highlights of him from his senior year for those that might not remember how good he looked back then. I can't wait to see how good he is now after 2 years in our strength and conditioning program and getting coached up by Nagy.

Am I looking through green & gold tinted glasses or is there a lot to like about the upcoming season?
Is this the starting lineup?
Calvin A Davis Finke Sisley Braun
Will it really matter who starts the game? These guys should get a lot of PT:
Hube Norris Welage Noel
That could be a solid 9-man group. Will the Freshmen be able to get time in the game? Or time to develop?
The PGs should be Calvin, Norris (and maybe some Welage)? I'm sure Davis could do some light duty there as well?
The 4-5 should be Braun, Noel, Sisley? Can Wilbourne get minutes with these guys in the mix?
Guys who can play 2,3 ...Davis, Hube, Welage...plus Finke who can also play 4 when we go "small"?
The incoming Freshman are both listed as Gs - at 6'5" and 6'8". I don't know what to expect or what positions they may play - especially as Freshmen.
Thoughts?

I'm very excited and optimistic about this upcoming season. This should be the most depth Nagy has had in his time at WSU. We will see how deep he goes on the bench. I'm not sure what to expect from the true freshman. Given Nagy's history, I wouldn't be surprised if one or both redshirt. Even without them contributing, I feel like one or 2 returners could see a reduction in minutes from the past couple seasons, but it's hard to guess.
On the last episode of the Horizone Roundtable, Matt Cox from the Three Man Weave podcast was a guest. He worked on the Horizon League preview for the Almanac which will come out in a couple weeks. He interviewed all Horizon coaches and dropped a couple nuggets about his conversation with Nagy:
- With the guard depth, Nagy wants to play 4 guards with Braun. We will likely see a lot of minutes with a lineup of Calvin, Norris, Davis, Finke, and Braun.
- Andy Neff will get major minutes. Nagy said something similar last season and I think it's just Nagy trying to get Andy Neff some recognition for his hard work. I only see him getting into the rotation if we have multiple big men injured and/or in foul trouble. (Nagy would have said this before Alex Garcia was added to the roster, if that would have any effect on this.)

I don’t think it matters who starts. I just really hope to see us use our bench more this year so the guys are healthy and have fresh legs for the HL tournament.

Not sure where I was going ask this question so I stuck it here. We’ve had chatter on other threads about players transferring because of lack of planning time. Sissily’s name has come up a few times. I thought a student athlete can only take advantage of the porthole once. Is this correct or am I crazy?

They can transfer as many times a they like, but only get 1 free pass not to sit out a year, unless there are unusual circumstances.

Hopefully that doesn’t become a concern. Blake has been a solid piece so far and should be seeing more minutes as the season progresses.

Based on just 3 games, Sisley has been highly efficient offensively. I'm sure as he gets more comfortable in our system, his minutes will increase. I think we've all been impressed with him so far.

Unsure where to put this but I love Noel. He is my personal favorite player on the team so far and he is a beast.
All the hype I've been reading here for 2 years is totally justified. I want to see him get a ton of minutes.
So happy to have 3 solid big men on the Raiders but especially Noel.

Not sure where else to put this, and I also can't believe I'm saying this, but is Wilbourn going to play at all this year? I don't recall seeing any injury updates on him? Why do Andrew snd Blake continue to ride the bench? Alex was 1-6 against RMU. There is no reason they shouldn't be playing.

This is shaping up to be one of the most inconsistent teams we've seen in years, and I think a lot of it comes down to roster management. Obviously losing two monster pieces is a huge problem, but it wasn't like we didn't have a squad full of players with decent experience to step in and compete for major minutes. Now, I don't know if I care if I ever see Wilbourn on the court again, he's a defensive liability first and foremost, but absolutely nothing special offensively either. But to get completely blown out in a conference opener, against a team with ZERO d1 wins, and not even attempt to let some of the ancillary pieces a shot to bring some energy or excitement into the game is mind-numbingly stupid in my opinion.
Is Sisley or Wilbourn going to change the outcome of the game last night? No, probably not, but is it at least worth a shot in the dark? I mean nothing was working last night for us, so what's the worst that happens? We lose by 5 more? So what? I've questioned Nagy's use (or lack thereof) when it comes to timeouts; he's been questioned about his lack of playing a deeper bench this season, and also in years past. The thing that really chaps my ass right now, and I've said it before, this team doesn't have leadership. We lost our two best players last year, we've struggled on both sides of the ball in multiple games this year. I'm sure Nagy would tell you we're still feeling guys out, messing with plays, rotations, etc., but when you've got a squad that doesn't know what to do when times get tough, the coach should be the leader, and it doesn't appear to me that he's doing that effectively as the team didn't seem to respond to anything last night.
It seems like we've got three completely different teams this year. We have the dogfight team we saw against Davidson, Louisville, and arguably Bowling Green. Then we have the blow em out squad that absolutely pummeled Defiance (take that's for what it's worth), Abilene Christian, and Weber State; and then there's the team that has shown very little fight; we first saw that at the end of the UC-Riverside game and we saw it rear its ugly head again yesterday, and I'm sure it's not the last.
This feels like 2014 in the making again; start out decent in the OOC (check), now I'm worried that we're going to get absolutely blasted in conference on the road and struggle like hell to win home games against teams that historically we've completely dominated. Hope I'm wrong. Obviously we weren't dealt great cards in the offseason, but we have to play the cards we're dealt, and I don't think we're playing them very well right now.
