Could Tanner come in as a walk on next year and pay his tuition? That is not going to happen It may not be feasible in this case, but I’m also curious as to would it be possible for any transfer. Is the transfer rule based on scholarship or overall eligibility?

Transfer rules are based on eligibility (if you made a team roster, transfer rules apply to you), rules are not based on scholarships. Although I would think a waiver would be easier to get if not on scholarship, but that is purely speculation.

There are no current NCAA rules to govern this. My guess is that there will be within a year or two because the idea alone would destroy what’s left of college athletics at least at our level. What would stop a team from a power five conference with any kind of money from having a 25 man roster with 13 scholarship players and 12 walk on‘s that are paying their way with NIL money? They made scholarship limits for that very reason to try to level the playing field.
In regards to Wright State, our players are not getting NIL money anywhere near what it would take to pay their own way here. And if we had a player that could get that kind of NIL money, we sure in the hell would not be able to keep him here if we even made the idiotic suggestion that he should give up his scholarship to a walk on and pay his own way. He would simply go somewhere else where he could have a scholarship AND make his NIL money.

2023-24 roster is up: wsuraiders.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster2 items I noticed: - 6'7" Junior Forward Braden Grant. He played limited minutes at Cedarville University last season. Bob Grant's son. - Tanner is listed as a graduate student. I'm not sure if that's accurate. If so, that might mean he is eligible.

Who is Carson Schwieger? It looks like he committed to WSU 3 days ago but I don't remember reading anything about him. I just searched the recruiting forum and this thread and no results came up. Can someone enlighten me? 6'8" freshman from KS. Thanks! Tweet announcing his commitment: WSU roster website: wsuraiders.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/carson-schwieger/5778

Pretty embarrassing for me. My bad!
Happy to have someone else who can shoot from outside. Curious if he will be part of the rotation this year.
Also interesting seeing Tanner listed as a grad student. Did he graduate this summer and we just haven't heard about it? If that's the case wouldn't he be a grad transfer and not need an exception?
I have more questions about this than I did yesterday.

I think the roster is listing the year of eligibility instead of academic year (and using graduate student to represent the extra COVID year), so this would mean that he might not have graduated yet.

These highlight videos have me hyped for this season. Don't care if these are crappy Euro teams. Starters are probably Trey, Huibregtse, Holden, Noel and Braun. Though Welage should be starting. Welage should be first off the bench, then Carter. Norris has a lot of experience now and has a great motor, coach will probably have him over Andrew. In the brief moments of the highlights, Brown looks like Calvin with his shot. Callaghan has looked very very good imo and Woods looks good. Anderson is the only one without a highlight but I know he will be good.
I don't want to get my hopes up, YSU and UWM seemed to had a lot of talent too. But wow we look pretty talented and deep.

Agreed with all of this. I feel bad but I don't know what all of the new players look like and not having jersey numbers in the highlight video made it tough. There was a sweet stepback three that looked like not Trey but kind of like Trey's movement. Was that Brown? It was like 40 seconds into the most recent highlight video. Assuming Holden plays I am beyond hyped for this season. I haven't bought season tickets since moving from Dayton further south 8 years ago but I am legit thinking of getting them this year because I think it could be a really special year. Hopefully it's not just drinking the offseason Kool-Aid but as long as we have enough height that gets PT and stays healthy I am really optimistic about the year.

Yeah in the first highlight video that step back 3 was Brown. He hit a lot shots in that first video. Callaghan had unbelievable assists in both the first and second one. In both he has a pretty nice fade away shot, mid range for both. Good point, team is different without Holden. I'm expecting him to play just seems like a waste of time if he needs to sit out. Not a chance he'd return if that's the case. You should renew your tickets! Even if Holden has to sit for some bs reason. I'll buy you a beer!

Comparing Norris and Welage’s playing time is about as useful as comparing Norris to Braun. They play completely different positions. Welage’s playing time comes down to his ability to defend more athletic guards or bang inside vs bigger players. He is a 2/3/4 guard in our system. If he is going to play the 2 he has to be able to guard those quick HL guards that he has struggled to contain throughout his career so far. If he is playing the 3/4 he has to become a more physical player and rebound better. I obviously think he is a better 3/4 in our system. We lost a lot of games last year because of our defense and our defense looked so bad because we couldn’t rebound worth a crap. We are going to be playing small ball again this year. Guys like Welage, Bo Meyer, Drey Carter, and Logan Woods are going to have to hit the boards like Tanner Holden does if they want meaningful playing time. The good news for all the Andrew Welage fans out there (myself included), it looks like he has had a really good year in the weight room when you look at pictures and videos from Italy. I think he is ready to step up his game and become the player we all hope he can be.
