If Nagy can’t win with this team, who can he win with?

Man exciting game if you were a neutral fan. Just unfortunate bounce at the end of regulation there. Holden fought for it briefly, I mean that was kind of a lucky play for NKU. But good teams also create those situations to give themselves a chance. Got to give NKU a lot of credit, clearly the best program in the league right now. I still think WSU's probably number 2 but the last few years have been tough. I didn't realize how good Warren has been in his career, averaging over 15ppg all 4 years he's been at NKU. Quietly one of the best to ever play in the Horizon League.
It seemed once Basile and Holden transferred the Raiders have not been able to recover overall to seriously compete for the league title. The air kind of went out of the balloon the last few years after that. I think that really hurt WSU basketball at least temporarily. Even Holden's return didn't move the needle much surprisingly, as they had almost the same season this year, 18-15 the last two years I believe?
The Horizon Leauge is interesting...I think the top 8 teams are at about the same level. I just think I thought Calvin and Holden were going to be able to elevate this team a little more than happened. I think the league was kind of fun as far as how competitive. With that being said, I didn't pay quite as close attention this year. This team just seemed to lack something going back to last year. Not sure it's leadership, toughness, talent, a combination etc. I'm not quite sure.
I think Nagy realized they probably weren't going to be very good defensively this year so just chose to try to maximize the offense and hope they could outscore teams. It is a more fun style to watch, but as seen tonight, I think their defense was always going to be the reason they would get beat.
Calvin and Holden have had amazing careers, but I'm personally looking forward to seeing some new blood in the backcourt, some younger guys getting chances to make their marks on Wright State. Next year is going to be interesting. Who knows with transfers and NIL stuff what all will happen, but I think Nagy will field a solid Top 5 HL team.
Nagy to me is completely safe in his job. I still think the Covid years, NIL has thrown him and a lot of coaches/programs off. Now 2 more years of 18-15, first round, second round losses, I think then his job would be in jeopardy. I still wonder whether he'd retire at some point in the next few years. I hear a lot of coaches in the college ranks, basketball and football, are just not happy, overwhelmed with it all. He's made enough money I'm sure he could retire, or take a year away from coaching.

Random add on thought...but if it makes any of you feel better, Wright State beat NKU in the HL championship game in 22 after being beat by them twice in the regular season, so we still have that on them! I wouldn't mind seeing NKU win it again...but also be nice for the actual #1 seed to win the title for once in the tourney being Oakland.

Last time I checked the bracketology they were predicted to be a 14 Seed. NKU would probably be in the play-in game.

Listening to Nagy explain losses with this roster in the HL is like listening to the SOTU tonight.

Completely terrible way to lose and end the regular season on your home court. The Raiders have done a terrible job defending their home court this season and just defending in general. Defense wins championships...
I'm probably in the extreme minority, but I'm actually optimistic for next season (oddly enough I was in the minority who was pessimistic entering this season). It seems crazy that the team could be better after losing two 2,000+ point scorers, but I believe that will be the case. Trey and Tanner are two highly skilled players, particularly on the offensive end, but I don't think either are great defenders or really known for making hustle plays. The team isn't going to get as much attention and is going to surprise people. The defense is going to be much better all around-- improved defense from the guards and more length and interior depth. I have high hopes for Jaheem Webber. I think he will be more of a rim protector and could be a program changer where our teams will more resemble the teams of the Loudon Love era.

Will Webber actually play in 2024? History has shown us that he will likely redshirt. As for tonight...just brutal. I've been following this team closely for 27 years and I would say this is the most overall disappointing season I've experienced. Losing to UWM in 2021 was a much worse loss than this but at least WSU had a better overall season than this. I am shocked that this team barely had a good enough record to host a quarterfinal game let alone lose it. So much ugh for tonight and this season overall.

Well that ending sucked. I'll have to watch the replay, but in the arena it looked at end of regulation that Tanner had the rebound and NKU was trying to intentionally foul, just grabbed his arm, ball comes out, and refs swallow the whistle. At end of OT, Tanner comes up the right side and has Wellage unguarded streaking up the left -- could have shot a 3, or driven to the hoop and laid it in to tie, but Tanner never looked across the court, was leaving for Alex the whole way. Again, I'll have to watch tomorrow when I'm not so pi$$ed off.

I can never root for NKU to win it, just like I could have never rooted for Butler way back when. Oakland has the players to win, but several are such poor sport show boats its hard to root for them too. I'll guess I'll have to root for MKE or CSU? Or just watch the Big 10 and ACC.

Refrige I think there's probably quite a few more with you that are optimistic about next season. It feels like it could be a fresh start, a reset for the core of the team and maybe even for Nagy a bit.

hokie...i thought the same at first that Holden could have hit Wellage on that final play cross court for more of an open 3. But after watching that replay several times, there was a NKU player that I think possibly could have deflected a potential pass to Wellage. Now maybe Holden could have gotten to the bucket, but I think overall he made the right play there getting it to Wellage. Alex H. I thought could have maybe taken a dribble to the right and gotten a better shot off...but they basically had him double teamed. I think he got about the best shot off he could have. Now maybe a really savvy move could have been Alex H. pump faking and drawing a foul on a 3 point shot. But that would have taken some real on the fly thinking, something that usually only veteran NBA players may think of.

From my angle at the far end of the court, it looked like Tanner was speared in the back at the end of regulation, and I thought for sure the refs were going to make the call against NKU, and WSU wins the game. I plan to watch the game again to see how WSU blew this game, tomorrow may be too soon, since I am still in a state of shock. I thought the refs were partial to the Norse. NKU was very aggressive and were hacking and pushing WSU all over the place and the refs allowed it.

I agree with the optimism for next year. Drey showed promise early in the year, and hopefully will continue to develop. Logan came on strong at the end of the year, and was probably our best or 2nd best defender (though he still commits fouls like a freshman...he should outgrow that). The offense will need to run thru AJ and Brandon. Alex was in the zone offensively for the last month or so and along with Wellage can keep the defense from just packing it in tight inside around AJ and Brandon. Al's defense was also somewhat better at season's end, and will be passable if Logan can step up to defend the other teams best guard. The question mark is can either KK or Norris step up and assume the point guard role? So far, I haven't seen much reason to believe either can. If AJ/Brandon/Alex can carry the scoring load, then all the PG has to do is feed it to them without turning it over -- Norris can do that, even if he can't score. KK has the energy and athleticism, but he'll have to stop being a turnover machine and stop taking bad shots if he wants off the bench. If either of the two incoming freshman bigs can defend, they will also get quality reserve minutes (if they can't, they'll redshirt). Not sure where this years red shirts will fit in, but hopefully they can carve out complimentary roles of 5-10 minutes per game. Lets hope we don't see any of the above names in the transfer portal over the next month. I don't think we'll score 100 or 90 anywhere near as much as we did this year, but I hope we also won't be giving up 85 or 90 as much either. Perhaps we can get back to being the type of team Nagy wants, that can lock down and grind out wins in the 60s and 70s, and not have to score at a prolific rate for 40 minutes to avoid coughing up the lead.

Looks like WSU did everything they wanted to do on the second foul shot, Alex boxed out the free-throw shooter, AJ and Noel were under the basket, and the ball went straight to Tanner. Unfortunately, Tanner did not secure the ball and let the NKU player rip it out of his hands. It was just a fluke play. The NKU player wanted it more than Tanner.

The last thirty seconds of regulation were hard to watch again. It seemed like WSU was going to win after Calvin's two free-throws with 15.4 seconds to go. Really wish Nagy had called a timeout to prepare the defense for the final NKU possession. AJ and Noel looked so tired, they probably could have used a couple of minutes to catch their breath and get focused. The guy next to me wanted WSU to foul NKU on their final possession since WSU had a three point lead. Oh well, they played hard, they never gave up, they almost won, time to move on.
