As of now, Tae Gibbs is only staff member moving with Nagy to SIU. Most likely that's it. Bere is returning.

Bere and Goff were the only 2 coaches I cared if we kept. Bere has a chance to be a monster recruiter for us now that the leash is off. At his previous jobs he was a known as a really good recruiter. Nagy really restricted him by only really letting him go after high school kids. Now that he can really pursue prep school, JUCO and transfer portal kids, I think the talent level is going to be going up moving forward. Goff is a glue guy for the entire staff and does a lot of the background recruiting for us. I’m indifferent on Trice. I think he did a good job helping Trey Calvin develop his overall offensive game the last 2 years but I haven’t really been impressed with his recruiting and I don’t know what else he brings to the table. With 2 open spots now, I hope we bring in a veteran coach with Ohio ties and is a big zone proponent. I think we need to be able to play something at times besides straight man to man and having a coach on staff that is a zone true believer could help. The other open spot is the player development position vacated by Tae Gibbs. I would love to bring Cole Gentry back to Wright State in that role. He just finished his second year as a grad assistant (1 at Wisconsin and 1 at Colorado State) after a brief pro career overseas. This would be a good next move for him and I think he would be a great young up and comer to the coaching staff.

I love this idea, and I have mentioned to several people that it would be great to see him come back to Wright State. Since we are going to have either Keaton Norris or someone completely new at the point, I think Cole would bring a lot to the table working with whoever ends up as our starting point guard.

I’m wondering if we are still waiting on some of our staff to decide if they are staying or leaving. The women’s team lost 1 assistant coach this offseason and the job is already posted on the university’s open jobs database. There are currently no assistant coaches spots listed on the men’s side. Also of note, Bob Grant has officially been retired for a couple of weeks now and Brown was promoted to intermediate AD. The AD position isn’t listed either. It’s been speculated by others on this board that she will be given the full time job eventually. I think that is becoming more obvious since they aren’t even listing the job opening. I don’t quite understand why they didn’t just announce the promotion instead of going through all this intermediate AD bull shit if she is just going to end up with the job.

Good to hear. My source (an alum from a few years ago) said he figured Bere would be gone. Good to see that Sargent was able to get him to stay in town. Huge for recruiting.

I love the hiring of Cole Gentry. He was a coach on the floor when he played. He should be an even better coach on the bench. I was surprised that we could get him away from Colorado St so soon, especially since they extended their coach another 5 years with options for more money ($1.7 mil now to $2 mil in option year 7), which I assume more money also went down to the assistants too. I also thought Nagy might also try to get Gentry on his bench, after losing another coach today.

I love that Clint got Cole to join the staff. He can bring his Point Guard experience to our back court that we have been needing. Now lets lock down some transfers and get rolling!

I wonder if Sargent got a larger pool of money to allocate to assistant salaries that helped with retention and recruiting Gentry to join since I have to assume Sargent is making less than Nagy was scheduled to make this year. Either way, a good use of resources if so.

I also thought Nagy might also try to get Gentry on his bench, after losing another coach today. Cole Gentry was a graduate assistant at his last 2 stops. You basically get to go to graduate school for free and get a small stipend in those roles. CSU’s coach probably has a bigger budget in his contract for suits than what they give graduate assistants. In regards to Cole joining our staff, I’m withholding full judgment pending on how Sargent completes his staff. The press release says he has 1 spot left to fill. I think he needed to add a veteran coach that will bring new ideas to the table. A guy that coaches zone with Ohio recruiting ties would have been a huge bonus. I still hope that occurs with that final ire. I would have liked Cole to be added in Tae Gibbs role. It would have been the next step up the coaching ladder, not a full blown assistant. Cole has absolutely no recruiting experience and more importantly no recruiting connections. Half the battle of recruiting is getting past the gate keepers, which are the high school and AAU coaches. If those guys like you, you have an in with their players. Cole currently brings nothing to the table from that regards. I think Cole will eventually be a good recruiter but it is going to take some time. When it comes to the staff in it’s entirety, we have very little experience. Sargent is a first time head coach. He only had 8 years experience as an assistant coach before that and it has all been while he was here at WSU. Trice only has 3 years of college coaching experience and all of that has been here. Bere is our most experienced assistant coach with 18 years experience as an assistant at WSU, Jacksonville, and Fort Wayne. Im happy for Cole and the rest of the staff. I just hope we make a really good hire with that last spot.

Sargent and Bere are close and like this area. Once we win the Horizon 2 out of next 3 years with an upset in the NCAA tournament, Bere will follow Sargent to the next spot. Or we promote Bere. I think it's a good sign that Sargent has so much buy in from the remaining players and coaches. You really don't see any rosters stay remotely consistent with a new head coach. I'm certainly more optimistic for next season then I was at the end of the season. Maybe Nagy was holding them back. As great as it is to have Cole back, the move is a head scratcher. It's a pretty huge jump with little coaching/recruiting experience. It's a great investment though, he could be great long term.

Would love to see Wright State bring in some players from Overseas. Seemed like Wright State was one of the first teams to bring in Foreign players, beginning with the Underhill era. Players like Herriman, Potapenko, Sheinfeld, Nahar, Kos and I think Bruno Peterson was from Latvia. Can anyone think of any other foreign players who played for Wright State?
