Nothing too concrete. Did not say much about staff or anything different on coaching style. Hopefully he can pluck a few local kids in portal to fill up the roster spots.

Big D posted this interview on the recruiting board. In it, Ayden discusses why he chose Wright State towards the end and he addresses the coaching change. It sounds like Bere is staying at Wright State based on his comments. I think this is great news. Keeping Bere gives us the best chance to keep Webber too. I also think Bere has been handcuffed by Nagy as a recruiter since he has been here. Nagy only really wanted to go after high school seniors. Bere was a good JUCO recruiter at his previous 2 jobs as a college coach. I think this opens up a whole new recruiting avenue we have been neglecting.

He was asked if people would notice a change in style between him and Nagy and he said "I'm sure they will" but did mention that he really liked the freedom Coach Nagy gave players. I thought it was interesting that he mentioned two separate times that fundamentally he and coach Nagy have very different personalities. I had to go back to listen to get the quote right (and I don't want to read too much into it) but found it interesting that he framed this comment that he "hoped" people would notice that difference. "coach and I are just different personalities and I hope that shows up for me and our program in a variety of ways".

In regards to Nagy and SIU, I wish him nothing but the best. He was successful here during a really rough patch of time for the university and athletic department financially and always represented the university with class.
In regards to Sargent, I’m excited about his future here. I understand some of our fans concerns about his lack of experience and the fact that his whole coaching career has been under Nagy. I think that can be overcome. Early indications are that he is keeping the coaching staff together, the returning roster is staying intact, and he might even be able to keep all 3 incoming recruits. That is an excellent start to his tenure. I like the fact that we are looking at all options to fill our 4 vacant roster spots. In the past, we might have added 1 transfer but more than likely we would have added another high school kid or 2 and banked a scholarship for the future. I like that our coaches are hitting the portal much harder than in the past, looking at JUCOs, looking at prep school kids, besides just high school seniors. This team could make some noise in the HL next year with the right additions and a coach that can figure out a way to make the most out of their skill sets. If the entire staff ends up staying together, then we have 1 spot to fill. I hope Clint adds someone with prior head coaching experience that he can use as a sounding board.

I supported Nagy until the end. I was surprised when he left. But, I am glad that Sargent has taken over the team. His youth and desire should outweigh his lack of head coaching experience. If we had kept Nagy, I think WSU would have stayed in a comfortable zone of good, but not great. With new blood, there is a chance for new energy to propel this program to new heights never achieved in the past.

If we had kept Nagy, I think WSU would have stayed in a comfortable zone of good, but not great. With new blood, there is a chance for new energy to propel this program to new heights never achieved in the past. Clint’s biggest chance to succeed is going to come down to 3 factors: 1. How much is he willing to adapt his system. The game is always changing. Your roster is always changing. You have to figure out how to utilize what you have to get the most out of them. Nagy was not willing to change and would prefer to lose games doing it his way than to compromise in his mind. 2. Putting together his staff. Early indications are that the staff is staying together and he has one open spot. He needs to bring in a rock star of a recruiter with that open spot. If he can bring in a guy with Ohio ties even better. You need great players if you want to have a great team. If everyone else really is staying, he needs to get the most out of them. Give them clear expectations for what he wants from them. If they don’t live up to those expectations, he needs to replace them after this next season. This may be Clint’s only chance to be a head coach if he doesn’t succeed. He can’t afford to be the nice guy all the time. If he doesn’t feel he is getting the most out of his staff, he needs to replace the pieces that aren’t cutting it. 3. Clint needs to embrace being the face of Wright State athletics. Now, more than ever, a good basketball coach needs to be a promoter of his program. You have to get fans excited about the program. We needs butts in the seats to increase revenue. We need donors engaged so the want to give to the athletic department and our NIL fund. You can be a great Xs and Os coach and a great recruiter. It all means nothing if you can’t get donors lined up to help you keep those players. I really think Clint’s youth and passion for the game is going to help us here more than anywhere. Nagy hated the idea of instant transfers, the portal, and NIL and it really hurt our efforts with boosters in that regard. I expect to see a complete 180 from Clint in the way he approaches NIL.

Thanks for this great nformational post. I hope he can adapt his system to use the strengths of his players. I would like to see more players in the game and a fast pace. I don’t expect him to say “It is their team” but we are all the team.

I don’t think your first sentence makes any sense with your second sentence. We have just finished up the 2 most disappointing seasons in the Nagy era watching this team trying to play fast pace. The roster the last 2 years wasn’t built for it and the current roster is even more ill suited for it. Fast paced teams are athletic guard oriented teams. That is not what I think of when I look at our roster. Our most successful seasons in the Nagy era was when we played at a slower pace, played great defense and controlled the boards. Our offense was run through post touches. If you watched the Ayden Davis interview, you will see that is what they sold him on with coming to Wright State. We want to get back to running the offense through post touches. Those are the types of recruits we signed in the fall. Those are the types of players we have reached out to in the portal so far. I think Wright State is going back to always having 2 bigs on the court. I think we will always have a SF on the court with some size. They will list that player as a guard, but I think they want someone that can help rebounding. Besides that, we will have a tradition SG and PG. 2 post players: Brandon Noel, Ayden Davis, Jaheem Webber SF (3rd guard): Drey Carter, Alex Bruskotter SG: Alex Huibregtse, Logan Woods PG: Keaton Norris, Solomon Callaghan Going under the assumption that no one else leaves and the 3 recruits stick with their commitment, I think we will try to use the 4 open scholarships to add another experienced post player, SF, SG, and PG.

The fast-paced offense included many many post touches, hence his comments. Point otherwise taken.

It's gonna come down to Ws and Ls but I'm feeling better about this hire and definitely like the size of players he's targeting.
